WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly cable access television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Why is it that the callers that are hardest to listen to are the ones who complain about other callers being hard to listen to? ARTHUR?

Theistic reasoning...there are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on all the beaches of the world....but there's only one star with life on it, just so that the Hebrew war god could pull off a plan to rescue a minority of earth humans from the consequences of his own hatred.

If a Christian vs athiest debate appears to be fair, then it wasn't fair. I have never seen a debate where the Christians ever had a legit dog in the fight. Never.

The Bible is very often sympathetic towards sinners. For example... If a virgin is raped in a field, where nobody could hear her screams, then she is not guilty.
@brucebaker810
@brucebaker810 5 жыл бұрын
tedgrant2 So the raped virgins...well, the rural ones anyway...aren't sinners. That's nice. They never get anything. (a la "the meek" in the Sermon Near the Mount in Life of Brian) Tap you on the shoulder. One day behind you. And I'm entering the future as I type. Soon, you'll be following MEEeeee. Cheers mate.

Great rant against the catholic church Matt. Good to hear, and as an ex-catholic groomed by a seminarian but he chose another twink victim, it was music to my ears. I must not have been pretty enough.

I'm a skydiver. Regarding having "faith" in your skydiving instructor: I don't have ANY faith -- I have INFORMED CONFIDENCE in the people I trust with my life and safety! My husband teaches motorcycle safety; he's an experienced rider and a highly trained safety instructor. No "deity" has anything to do with keeping an enthusiast safe while they participate in a sport that could lead to injury or death.

You know, listening to Jen's story regarding Mental Healthcare in the Army and the email she received, I don't normally like to go down the conspiratorial route but if I didn't know any better I would think that the Military (again, speaking to the person's email Jen was speaking about) was purposely using Chaplain's to 1) keep from having to pay for Soldiers mental health needs after they leave the Service and 2) to keep from having to admit that likely a lot of Soldiers **need** mental health services, period. If I was conspiratorial and thought that was true then I would have to say that those in charge of the Military (who obviously aren't the troops on the ground, I'm speaking of the power structure in the Pentagon) were a bunch of goddamn sons a bitches who deserve to fry for eternity in the hell they claim to believe in. Again...**if** I were conspiratorial, etc.

I don't think it's conspiratorial, governments around the world fund religious "charities" rather than properly address people's social and health needs.
@krisaaron5771

@@andybeans5790 This, exactly!! I firmly believe referring soldiers to a person who dispenses superstition instead of meaningful help is a way for the military to save money. My father was an Army officer during WWII and suffered from lifelong PTSD as a result of what he saw in the European theater. I suspect the Army unofficially discouraged soldiers from asking for professional help by relying on the "snap out of it!" approach and questioning the "manhood" of anyone who was traumatized by what they experienced.

Why do married couples who have problems talk to a (virgin?) priest? It's like having a toothache and talking to a computer salesperson

“Dictionary’s aren’t authority on meaning, they describe usage” What? Dictionaries give meaning. You can’t even describe usage without meaning. I have no idea why Matt believes dictionaries aren’t the authority on meaning. If they are not, what is?
@jameswest8280
@jameswest8280 5 жыл бұрын
You may have a point, but languages form the dictionaries, not the other way around. The problem with language is a single word can have numerous meanings leading to misunderstandings. Translating between languages makes it even more difficult.
@johnlopperman2161
@johnlopperman2161 5 жыл бұрын
Cha WE DO. Those who use words give them meaning. Dictionaries describe meaning(s) people give words. As people CHANGE meanings of words, dictionaries eventually reflect it. Gay, Hot, Cool, etc.
@mfollonier
@mfollonier 4 жыл бұрын
I think what he means is that words, as in the sounds, themselves don't have any inherent meaning, meaning is derived from the usages those words are given, and those meanings are described in dictionaries - dictionaries do not prescribe the meaning of words, they simply present what words represent in the general usage of the language.
@mfollonier
@mfollonier 4 жыл бұрын
Words don't have *inherent* meanings, they have meanings according to their usages, which are described, not prescribed, by dictionaries.
