The Atheist Experience 875 for July 20, 2014 with Matt Dillahunty and Aron Ra.
Matt and Aron take callers.
SHOW TIME-STAMPS
00:54 - Intro & Announcements - Matt Dillahunty
02:23- Evan (atheist): debating whether God exists, keeping your temper when debating apologists
10:25- Kylie (atheist): debating with people who disregard evidence
22:22- Kevin (atheist): the Bible shows Jesus was a false prophet, theists refusing to consider evidence
34:27- Michael (atheist): presenting a positive example of atheism to relatives
41:44- Esta Ann (atheist): why spend time debating creationists when atheists could reach out to moderate theists
51:39- Justin: asks for evidence why believing as many true things and as few false things as possible results in living a better life
WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly cable access television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Why is it that if you want people of all races to be treated fairly then you hate your own race? Around 20 minutes into the show, Matt takes a call from an atheist woman married to a theist husband. She's worried that his church will tell their daughter (who has a disability) that she's "not right with god" if one of their ritual holy healings doesn't bring noticeable, positive results for her. Blame the victim; what a shitty way to run a church that purportedly worships Jesus. But Matt had absolutely beautiful advice for her; the best I've ever heard - especially for a 'sacred' institution like religion has become in this country. Matt, you ROCK!!!

@@wakeupthisisntreal8168 hmmm... To my knowledge, no Christian has ever produced hard evidence, REAL evidence to back any of their claims. Which means ALL THEY HAVE are feelings. Feelings that Jesus loves them. Feelings that they have been born again. Feelings that that they have been saved. Seems to me all they have to go on are feelings. Do people REALLY have a RIGHT to their "opinion"? Do you REALLY get to CHOOSE what is true? We see examples everywhere where people CHOOSE NOT TO BELIEVE scientific findings that have mountains of evidence supporting their truth. So if someone lives a life of love and kindness and does only wonderful unselfish things but they don't believe in God... then they go to hell when they die. Heaven is a place of perfection. Only perfection can be there. That's what makes it "Heavenly". Tho, "good people" are not perfect. Good people still have plenty of negative qualities that they would infect Heaven with, if they were somehow permitted entrance. So, "all people" require saviorship from that of a perfect nature. Jesus is mankind's intermediary between God and man. That is to say that Jesus picks up our tab of imperfection, and fills that gap with His perfection. He takes upon Himself our personal ego (our "sin nature"); and, He responds to it all with perfect unconditional love and dignity. Thus, He bridges the gap between our imperfect nature and Gods perfect nature. We thus, can stand in the presence of God without evaporating. And, we then will no longer experience death bcuz death is a symptom of imperfection, which is caused by the imperfect response to the human ego (sin nature). I personally believe that all people will be saved by Jesus. I don't believe that anyone will ever go to Hell and have no way out, whereas, Jesus would be incapable or unwilling to save them. Imo, theres zero chance of that. At least, in regards to an eternal Hellfire.

@@1StepForwardToday How do you know heaven exists if you, or anyone you have ever met, have never been there? It's a fable, heaven and hell, created by people in order to control the weak-minded and easily led. Also the existence of Jesus is an assumption based on the later following his influence amassed. Other than the New Testament, there is no concrete evidence of his existence. (Unlike Mohammed of the Muslim religion whom we have actual proof of his existence.) But one statement you made is correct. That no-one will go to hell. Just take it one step further and accept that no-one will go to heaven either.

Believers epistemology is based on the human mind which is projected. God is a super human mind without a brain who has always existed who thought/willed material into existence from nothing. The problem with basing knowledge on the mind itself is that imagining something doesn't make it real.

The first caller probably wont see this, but frustration and anger can spawn from a lack of understanding and/or an inability to convey a point or idea accurately. If you find yourself getting angry or frustrated at something, you can try gaining a greater understanding of the subject and then attempt to explain it in its simplest possible form. There's something relieving that comes from mastering something. No matter how small. There's also the idea that the only person one can control is one's self. Keeping this in mind throughout your interactions can help you realise what you can/can't control, let go off any pent up frustrations that are out of your control and help you check yourself when you're becoming authoritative.

"God" will never "show up" to prove him or herself. Wars have been fought over this entity. People suffering great pain, being sawed in half, their bodies mutilated piece by piece while screaming, meanwhile the entity watches with indifference, "oh look, they are at it again!" While doing nothing, ever, to stop the pain. That's why I don't believe. That's all I needed to become a non-believer. It's sad. Humans don't seem to getting smarter in America. But, they are in other countries. I would like to say that no matter what, America will always be smarter than others in the world, but that's not true. The Genius Visa is the only reason America remains somewhat viable in the world. Plus, our land. We will always be the best as long as we have the best land, which we do. Once will fill it up, we are doomed. Glad I won't be around to see it since I'll be around 200 years old. But, shows like this at least help modern Americans learn about facts. I'm so sad for all the people that died in the past and currently for nonsense bat shit crazy ideas. Sad world. We can do so much better.

You have it al wrong. Please read the scriptures for yourself there is a lot of cults that claim to be Christian and they twist the Bible and don’t live by what Jesus says. God is love and took your punishment for all your sins He made a way for you to have eternal life. We are to love even our enemies and forgive anyone that offends us. We are to be selfless and moral. To care for the orphans and widows. Jesus commands we don’t lie and steal, commit adulterous, Bible teaches not to get in debt and to work hard and to have integrity. Jesus offers mercy and grace to anyone. If you want to know the truth humble yourself and pray and ask Him to help you know what is really true and He will. With love

"If god know we are having a debate he should come in an settle it" What always bothered me with "god want's you to believe in him. you must trust the bible" mantra christians give is if god is all knowing and all powerful shouldn't god be able to figure out a compilation of stories and claimed "witness" accounts would not convince many people? and more to the point that an all knowing and all powerful god would know what would convince such people. An all knowing and all powerful god does not need faith to have people believe in him.
@TheSkullConfernece
@TheSkullConfernece 4 жыл бұрын
If there was such a god, the idea that somebody would have to be convinced at all, by writing or otherwise, doesn't make any sense. He should just be present and show up in reality on occasions to give guidance in science or magic or whatever. Free will sort of makes sense (but not really because he knows the future) so why would he waste the invention of free will in whether or not people believe in him rather than making it for the purpose of letting people decide what kind of advancements or explorations that humanity takes? That's what I would do. If I was God, I'd be curious what my creations would do and how that run the world.

It is hard for me to imagine ‘coming out’ as an atheist. What is described and discussed here is somewhat alien to me as we just don’t have this fundamentalism in Australia, even with now a Hillsong handclapper at the helm (although he will persist in trying to replace secular public school counsellors with gay-hating chaplains and we will persist in telling him no).
