I think the Beastars anime changed their designs slightly from the manga to make them a bit more human proportioned. In the manga Haru's a bit shorter, usually reaching about the middle of Legosi's thigh, and Legosi's claws tended to stand out a bit more even when he tried hiding them. But otherwise, their "mostly human" proportions helped to disarm the audience so that they observe the cast by human standards, usually before something shocking pulls us back down to the realities of their uneven social structure. It's such an amazing example of purposeful character design, and shows how anthropomorphism of it's ilk can work really, really well. Then, we get unstable fables...
@Schnipps2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It's supposed to make you think that yea, they are more human just animals. But then you'll get pulled out of that in such a harsh way when their animalistic tendencies force themselves out and you can see how so many of the predators suffer. I love Beastars.

The Latin Spanish dub of 3 Pigs and a Baby took an additional step on capitalizing on Shrek. In case you don't know, the Latin Spanish dub of Shrek was filled with Mexican typical phrases, as Donkey was dubbed by famous local comedian Eugenio Derbez. Thus, instead of Gingy asking Farquaad if he knew the Muffin Man, he asks if he knew about Pin Pon, a character from a Latin American children's song. After "I'm a Believer" plays in the end, Donkey says "Jue horrible, jue horrible" ("It was horrible, it was horrible"), a famous phrase said by Derbez. 3 Pigs and a Baby was one of many Mexican dubbed animated movies that, influenced by Shrek, ended up turning a comic relief character into a walking talking compilation of Mexican modisms (the dub of Barnyard had Pip the mouse being that type of character for instance). That way, the Straw Pig ended up as that kind of character: e.g., he says "¡Orale! ¡No creen que esta vez se pasaron de veras!" (something among the lines of "Wow! Don't you think they have crossed the line this time?") at one scene. Also, a big pig bully says he wants to play "Lobo, ¿Estás Ahí?" ("Wolf, are you in there?") with the adopted wolf. That, as you may have supposed, is a traditional Latin American children's game.

Speaking as a furry artist who has experimented with anthro designs before, one of the biggest pet peeves of mine are anthro characters whose heads and faces are too human-shaped, like these ones. With the bodies, I find you can usually play around with the ratio of human-to-animal in them without much issue, (though personally I prefer to make their proportions similar to the animal they're based on, like making an elephant tall and broad or giving a ferret a long torso and short limbs), but the head designs make or break an anthro character for me. I never care for cartoon animals whose basically look like a regular human head with fur and a few animal bits pasted on. At best it just looks like someone who visited the facepainting booth at the carnival, at worst it looks like... well, this movie. Even if they didn't have those awful dick-noses for muzzles, the dealbreaker for me would be the eyes. I prefer anthro eyes to resemble their real-life counterpart, or at the very least blend in with the art style and the shape of the head. With these ones, most of their eyes just look unnatural and way too human looking, being small, forward-facing, and on a flat vertical plane with a big forehead and eyebrows. That's why the tortoise's face is way more appealing than the rabbit's; he actually has a natural shape to his head, with his big round eyes situated near the sides of his face like an actual tortoise. Meanwhile, the rabbit looks like a hairy, beady-eyed human with big ears and whiskers. Overall, I don't care if anthros look realistic or stylized; the least I ask for is consistency- one thing that bothered in Zootopia is how the horse and elephant characters in the movie had flat hooves for hands with no fingers or thumbs. I mean you could argue the elephants at least have their trunks to manipulate tools and objects and stuff but how the hell do the horses operate their smartphones and stuff as seen in the film? My Little Pony could get away with that because everyone had hooves and you could argue that magic is involved (and it's funnier), but in Zootopia it stands out and raises too many questions.
@lulub5172 жыл бұрын
As a furry cartoon hobbyist, I’m all in for realistic humanoid bodies/cartoon bodies, or more animal-like bodies. My characters’s bodies are more like you said, animal shaped. For example, my chicken character is more round and plump, but I do have a duck character that is rather skinny, yet she doesn’t have major human-like proportions. I like a mixture of both and then sometimes one or the other. Though I have a massive pet peeve with werewolf designs. I want a werewolf to have a snout and not just a human face with one slightly wolf-like nose. Honeslty, Lupin wolf in Harry Potter was great imo, the uncanny human skin over wolf-like body proportions made it all the more freaky imo. The big fuzzy werewolves that are just giant furries are fine… but they’re too anthro wolf and not enough human mutation. But at least they’re better than the lackluster nose on human face with fangs, basically just face paint and a bit of hair. That always annoyed the crap out of me.
@andrewdiaz35292 жыл бұрын
And as someone who was obsessed and still kinda is obsessed with Zootopia, I agree. I'd also like to say that there were horses/zebra/equines/etc. Ungulates in general with hands similar to the sheep hands, so like hands with long nails so fingers were like 50/50 actual finger and "hoof nail"; They just didn't use them for all of the background ungulates for time/cost reasons and they already had the hoof hand versions ready as the base they'd used, so they just did that for all the background ungulates and went through the plan for the ones like Gazelle and Bellwether/Doug. In later fan QnA's one of the directors(maybe a writer) said he decided the hoof hands were like a birth defect that had some stigma and challenges like other disabilities.

I'm not even a furry and the furries with too human faces bother me. Deeply. There's a game called Zenless Zone Zero coming out with some anthros in it, and the character who seems like he'll be the most fun to play happens to be one of the anthros with a weirdly human face. It's not as bad as others I've seen but it's just enough to be weird to look at. As for Zootopia, I thought the lack of hands on elephants made some sense because of the trunk, but the one-toed ungulates bothered me too. They should've just given them a sort of 'mitten' shaped hand where they have one finger and one thumb. It's still an extra digit, but then again, I'm pretty sure they REMOVED some digits on some animals, so adding an extra... doesn't really matter. EDIT: I forgot to mention Zootopia has domestic pigs and sheep which drives me insane. The sheep also have their tails docked.

I design my animal characters to be basically humans with animal features- "nekos" I guess you could call them, but not limited to just cats. A couple examples- a rabbit with a muzzle, ears, and tail and a sheep with horns, a tail, and hooved feet, but otherwise human bodies. For the mentioned rabbit character, I did try to draw more animal-like legs and feet when designing them, but I couldn't get them to look right since I didn't have enough skill. I do have more traditional anthro characters, such as a racoon or deer that actually look like the animal they're supposed to be, but most of the time, it's just way easier for me to draw something humanoid than animalistic depending on the features due my limited abilities. It is unfortunately inconsistent, but I'm happy with what I have.

The noses could work for a character or two. The wolf scientist looks good IMO. I get the impression from that he's supposed to be creepy, so black lips and a huge nose lends to that. The problem is that they all have it, so we fault the design all-together.

When I was little I saw this movie, and thought the concept was cute, the 3 pigs rasing the wolf. As I got older I realized the movie had a lot of weak spots, but it still has a place in my heart. Also I never thought the designs of the wolf's were inappropriate.
@jvrec30882 жыл бұрын
The worst and funniest thing I found that was dumb and also hilariously STUPID is that in the 3 pigs movie, the wolves waited years just for a baby wolf to grow up so they could eat the pigs, YEARS JUST TO EAT 3 PIGS!
@elchanchopato96012 жыл бұрын
Also, in those same years the blown-down houses of straw and sticks were rebuild. Some cow builders rebuild them as the wolves deliver the baby and they are finished by when the wolf is a teenager. Like, what? One of the main points of the classic three little pigs story is that straw and stick houses only take a few hours or less to build! Also, why don't the cows rebuild those houses using bricks? Didn't the pigs learn their lesson after the first wolf attack? That was yet another main point of the original story!
@MrsMamaMallow2 жыл бұрын
The wolves plan was completely flawed from the start. They should of been moved on from the pigs when the wolf who came up with the plan stated they would wait till the wolf is a teenager. Wolf 1:Oh hell nah I’m not waiting years just to get a hold of three fucking pigs. Wolf 2:Time to bail.

Despite its limitations, the Tortoise vs Hare is a legitimately funny sports parody movie and no one can convince me otherwise. Kind of sad they didn’t each get their own video critiquing them. There aren’t a lot of spoofs of the Tortoise and the Hare or Goldilocks because of their simplicity even though they’ve been in the public domain a long time. So I appreciate lower budget movies like this for even attempting to expand upon the characters and themes in ways that make sense. Like how they make the Hare dad somewhat sympathetic as he really just wants to redeem himself because he believes his family sees him as a loser ever since he lost the race. It’s gotten to him so much that he gets mini seizures whenever someone mentions the catchphrase “slow and steady wins the race” (Kind of a a better chicken little if Buck was in the position of chicken little character arc wise.) Or Goldilocks invading people’s houses in order to flip them obvious to the actual harm she’s doing by touching people stuff without their consent.
