Frankie is a car park attendant at the spectacular Giant’s Causeway in Co. Antrim, one of Ireland’s natural scenic wonders. However, he has his eye on the future. Cathy is his friend and work colleague and she and her husband Paul are in trouble. Nevertheless, as Frankie always says: something will turn up!

Back over 25 years ago, a story went around that the car park attendant at Bristol zoo did just this. No-one ever questioned who he worked for; just gave him a few quid and went to look at the animals....it was actually a free zoo carpark!

There is ZERO fat on this little gem. Not one extra line or scene. It's tight, sweet, and it has warmth. I like it a lot. 🥰 *I know of an Army PFC during his second tour of Afghanistan who told the sergeant who asked him why he was standing outside the mess tent, that he'd been posted there in order to count the number of soldiers who ate at each meal. He said this because he'd seen many of the others in his group get sent off to dig with engineering units, and he just sort of ''wandered off'' before they could assign him to a labor detail. The sergeant got him a little counter-clicker, and told him to ''keep up the good work.'' It was a made-up job, and he did it for 15 months, AND he was told to ''train'' the next guy when his time was up. He NEVER had to turn in the count, and had no supervisor: easiest time anyone ever did in that war. 😅

I can believe it. While I was assigned to Lackland AFB one of my coworkers told me about a former employee who arrived at work every day, locked himself in his office, and was not seen until the end of shift as he headed home. This went on for years until his eventual retirement. Upon inspection it was determined the man reported to nobody and did nothing but read while at work, having no other assigned duties other than to collect his paycheck. I would have dismissed this story as poppycock except that the man telling it to me was in a very similar situation. Such is the nature of bureaucracy.

I think this is based on a report about e a car park attendant based at the little hut at the entrance of a car park for years and took entrance fee every day. Was very friendly and got to know the regular workers that used it. It turned out that he had set up himself unofficially and the car park was supposed to be free and unmanned. Genius! :-)

What a lovely short film. It was overflowing with realism. The actors were amazing. They were all believable! The married couple that was going through a financial crisis were so sweet. I appreciated how the husband expressed his feelings. He was honest with how he felt because he was not able to secure a position. The wife always made him remember what was important and that one day he would secure a position. Sometimes when couples have a financial crisis they forget to be kind to one another. Six months is a long time to be unemployed. The bank lends money and needs to receive it back. I am so happy that the man without a job was able to secured the attendant's job when he retired. The wife was sweet and very hopeful. 'HOPE CHANGES EVERYTHING'-i am sure many people can relate to this story! Hold on!

I can relate; believe me I’ve been in the same place as the husband. Never enough money no matter how hard you work; you feel irresponsible even though you’re doing exactly what you’re “supposed” to be doing. The endless waiting for “something to turn up.” And above all the disillusionment at realizing that “this is not where I thought I’d be at this stage in my life.” It takes a toll. Thank God I’m in a better place financially now and have been for nearly a decade, but there is a part of me that always wonders if we will make the mortgage this month, the car payment etc. It never goes away.

The banks need to be paid back. They cashed in an insurance policy that covered the cost of the mortgage default and put that in their pocket. The original mortgage application was a promise to pay and the banks auctioned the promissory note to group of investors so the bank doesn't even own the debt. They made a good wedge selling that debt on. After that they were just payment collectors for some one else. If the mortgagee wrote to the bank and asked for the original signed document to be returned back once the debt is paid the banks would refuse. You might ask how could the bank insist to hold on to the original signed documents when the debt had been paid ? For a very good reason. The original document would show on the back how much the debt was sold on for, and how many times the note has been auctioned. The scam would be exposed. And yet these unscrupulous bar stewards would throw a hard-working couple down on their luck out on the street and pretend they cared. They would say "sorry .. It's out of my hands ...this is from head office....."

It's fiat debt currency, there's no way of getting back from a war chest that was just a bunch of iou's anyway but there are some interesting ideas that some very clever people have come up with which I won't divulge here. My Dad lost his job for almost 2 years. I never knew, but we were 2 months away from being evicted from our home when he found another job. Mom told me when we were clearing out the house, she was preparing to move to a retirement apartment complex. As a U.S. WW II vet, he had a 2 year extension on the mortgage if her couldn't pay. That's what saved us initially. He lost his job because he refused to do something illegal his employer ordered him to do.

I once walked out of my job at an accountant's at 09.30 in the morning after being lied to once too often as I had answered an Inland Revenue initial investigation letter. The boss had completely fudged the set of accounts reducing the clients profit from 20,000 £ to 1500£. She had the warped idea that that was her job. I had to explain why i had left in order to get unemployment while i found another job. My 1st, evasive, answer didnt satisfy. I had to come clean. She got investigated then as well as her clients. I soon got another job.

This happened on my own land. Parking was free, but out of sight from my business. I noticed a well-known local character talking to people in the car park. He used to tout for traders in the area. Well, I'd sern him do it outside the Post Office andvthe butcher's too, and outside all the pubs, so I had no objection, he was always cheerful and people need guidance. I kept seeing him in the car park, always talking to people, giving them directions, and helping them to find a parking space. He knew everyone locally and always had a cheery smile. Then I realised what he was really up to... charging for parking wherever it was free. When I caught him with his ticket roll, he said he was selling the tickets for a raffle, but a customer said he was charging for parking. The wily old boy's reply was "I do it for all the businesses, organising their parking. I've always done it, and nobody's said anything about it before". True. He'd been doing it for years on busy days, working the first car park until it was full, then the next and the next, 50p a car, then back to the first as spaces emptied and new people drove in. Inside each car park, between the cars, keeping a watchful eye out for the owners, and never charging villagers, he'd squirrel away enough for a pub crawl every night. We shared a good knowledge of Anglo-Saxon vernacular language, it turned out. We still said a cheery "Good morning" when we met in the Post Office though.

May I add this: he did them a solid, and....has a GOOD HEART. PS, the suspence of this short film is fabulous. For someone with some ' intuition' I kinda knew from the very beginning it's plot and still having fun watching the supurb acting and timing. And as a result even giving people some sense of Hope.

Yesssch! Reminds me of Boudewijn Buch telling a story about his father. People thought he was crazy because in spring and summer he always , dressed like the guy in this film , volunteerly managed the traffic to the Beach of Scheveningen ( the Hague,the Netherlands). Not that anyone ever asked him to do so , he just did it. To park a car it was and sometimes still is a bloody hell because of waiting in the sun, kids in the back start to be annoying and so on. He just let the Dutch cars pass unless it became too obvious then he stopped one , made a small chat and let the jammed traffic slowly drive further. Too obvious yes. He only stopped cars with a German licence plate and somehow gave them a ticket for some lousy reason like no seatbelts and minor things like that. Actually he was the reason of the traffic jam , making a lot of cash. At the end of the day he always brought it to the Army of Salvation , the Red Cross , an Orphanage or to some families he knew they were very poor. When someone asked where the money did come frome he said laughing; The Germans love to pay back for what they did to us in the war.

Did a similar thing many years ago, not quite so profitable but our Motorcycle club used to go to the Black Horse pub in Climping, Sussex every Easter weekend and a mate would dress up as a parking attendant and charge two quid to park at the beach carpark (which was free all year round) No-one ever complained and we all got happily pissed and drunk the pub dry! Happy days.

Happened in the middle of London I believe. I remember reading about it 25-30 years ago, every one thought it to be a council carpark and the attendant was very well dressed and polite to all in the 20 plus years he ran it.

This is brilliant. I loved it, and with the big plus of having real accents, unlike all those shorts with American and English actors. This is human, humorous, alive, real life, the hypocrite at the bank blaming HO, " my hands are tied". Don't ever get a mortgage. Mortgage comes from two French words. Mort meaning Death, and Gage meaning Grip. Mortgage = Death Grip.

The all time BEST SHOW FILM EVER!! My understanding was the attendant was the owner of the most successful car park. That is why when Cathy was calling around to the other car parks telling them there was a need for a new parking attendant they ALL told her they did not own that car park. Because he was the sole employee he had no overhead and saved his money for decades so that he could retire rich at age 50. He was NOT a drug dealer. The bag consisted of coins from the car park. At the end he gave Cathy's husband his job and possibly the company. ( The clues were given when Cathy looked inside the locker and began to reminisce some of the things he had told her, such as "this is my car park" she thought initially that he meant that symbolically as in he took pride in working that car park, however, later after reminiscing his words, she realized it meant it litterally.)

He did not own the car park…20 years ago he set up his own parking attendant job, charging for parking on a lot that belonged to the visitors center. It made him rich enough to retire with a little home by the sea. He passed the torch to Cathy and her husband, so he could earn his living now, and pay their mortgage that was in arrears.

Excellent job from everyone involved in this short film...and what a legend the guy is in the real story to just employ himself in someone else's car park and to be fair he earned 100% of the profit so at least he was a decent employer aswell 🤔 hahaha

Great story. I'd never heard of that before. I reckon the idea was adapted for one of 'Last of the summer wine' episodes. Excellent acting and a story well told without needing to have everything laboriously explained.
