i don’t know if i really articulated myself as well as i would have liked this week, but hopefully you got the gist of what i was trying to say! once i feel more settled in the cousin, i’ll try and make a more concise video about it. needless to say, ive been feeling a little scattered mentally these past few days 🥲 if you’re looking for the notebook timestamps, i explain how im using the book from 3:16 to 25:32 then why i changed book from 25:32 to 38:15 💭 (a good alternative video title would be 'the hobonichi cousin: an infodump')

I feel like journaling for you is like moving the furniture around for me. When I'm in a weird place I have to rearrange everything in my bedroom/workplace. Feels like tetris sometimes and I never find the perfect spot for my desk 😅 Also: stationery shopping is the best dopamine boost, I always buy some after a trying moment 😁

Very nice and calming video ! I have a strong adhd and I have hypersensitivity (I dont know if that's how it's called in english). I get overwhelmed easily with stimuli, so these kind of videos are nice to watch. Quick question, what were the cards at the end ? They seemed lovely

I think the thing that I always wanted as a kid was a great big, beaten up journal containing all the secrets of the universe. now as an adult, I think it's a struggle between my need to plan, but also my neurodivergent/mentally ill brain wanting to reach for a good old notebook to write scribbles and scribbles of books no one will ever read. but, fr, I think the thing that appeals to me with a combined system is bringing my witchery, my special interests, my relentless curiosity, and my planning all under one roof. it's just a matter of finding something that will match that.

I can relate so so so much to this! after watching the video I took some time to jot down which notebooks I’m using atm & what I’m using them for & they all have a purpose but at the same time it’d be nice to have it all in one book. but when i’ve tried that before when I did bullet journaling, i went through notebooks so quickly 🙈 i used up one whole leuchtturm notebook in three months multiple times & it was a bit tiring to set up a new notebook every three months 😅🙈 right now i’m having one hobo weeks for work, one for personal, hobo cousin avec for journaling/memory keeping & one archer & olive entirely dedicated to notes i’m making during a course in iphone photography. and lastly i’m using an old leuchtturm to try out some commonplacing. it’s A LOT. 🙈 my neurodivergent brain is all over the place so it’d be nice to have it all in one place, but when it comes to journaling for example, i’m finding that i feel restricted sometimes since the hobo cousin is dated… but when it comes to planning, hobo weeks feels like such a good fit for me since i have limited space for jotting down tasks each day. when i did bullet journaling in a blank notebook, my daily tasks just piled on top of each other since i could take up unlimited space with new tasks 🙈 i’m done now & i’ve probably overshared but apparently i had many thoughts about this 🙈

@@wegotthepower do you have any pictures of these? It looks as "messy" and spread out like my system at the moment. I talked to a non autistic person about it trying to explain how i plan but she looked so confused i stopped after she was like "you have FOUR notebooks for this?" Lol. I had even more... I want to keep it together and im trying kinda bullet journaling plus a small weekly planner for the most important appointments.

As a neurodivergent person and planner, I completely understand changing things in your documenting routine. I do what makes me happy and brings me comfort. Planning is not only essential to my existence, it is also one of my special interests. The paper, pens writing and preparing pages is all soothing to me. I pretty much purchase the same things each year the main things. A hobonichi weeks, cousin and some sort of non dated book for common placing. Ive combined them all and hopped from book to book. Do what is comfortable. If you don't it will cause unnecessary discomfort. We handle our neurodivergence day to day so why not our planning and writing and common placing. I hope that makes some kind of sense because I get excited talking about planning and all that and I tend to ramble. I'll stop now. Love the videos. Be well and stay safe.

I love seeing people who can manage to fit all their needs in one book!! My brain never jives with it, each time I’ve tried it becomes overwhelming and I’ll put off journaling/planning because of it. So I’ve been keeping in mind that the best system is the one that works and the one you reach for! Be it one big book or a few small ones. ☺️

Thank you for such a wonderful video Megan ❤ I'm so excited you're using the Cousin! I love mine so much, I really do feel there's something magical about such a big book - it fits SO much information in it, and I also feel great satisfaction flipping back through my pages and remembering the moments I've recorded. As a child I had a big scrapbook filled with photos I cut out of fancy doll's house catalogues. I never actually had a doll's house but the catalogues with all the tiny pots and pans and pieces of furniture and things absolutely fascinated me! I stuck them in using sellotape, and it probably looked a complete mess, but it was my favourite after school hobby for a while 😊 I also seem to remember making a book about the Romans when I was about 8, inspired by the Horrible Histories books.

I have a cousin I started this year. I actually started it back in September and made the calendar pages up to match the months until I could seamlessly start the new year. It was a project. I really enjoy it, but I will say the biggest challenge I have is lack of portability. It is really great, though. But I find I don’t use the weekly layout really. I can’t find a way to use them. Kind of on that vein, you officially have all the sizes Hobonichi offers! I hope that you’re giving yourself grace. You are deserving of grace! Your shop is so lovely and things will work out. I’m sorry PP is being uncooperative. I tried so many times to check out the release day and I was one of the ones continually denied my payment going through. Clearly PayPal realized you are awesome and they were jealous. Hopefully things work out sooner than later. Hopefully I can actually order some gloomies and stickers next time. Until then, I hope you are doing okay. Sending hugs from across the pond. ❤

i relate DEEPLY to the need to have everything important in one book, especially in times of immense mental stress. it reminds me of when i was a (very anxious) kid and kept all my important little trinkets in one box in case the house ever caught on fire. i do some version of that in like, every aspect of my life now, including planning. it just feels safer! as far as fictional journals go, rust's casework journal in true detective season 1 resonated with me soooo much. especially when they say they make fun of him by calling him "the tax man" because of his big ledger book he's constantly taking notes in. goals forever

“Unhinged journals” is literally my life goal. I have sooo many journals and all of them are like that and I love it. I always loved all the ones you mentioned growing up but I did have a particular focus on the Filofax in 27 dresses. It’s what introduced me to the “adult” stationery world because I NEEDED a planner like that where it’s just pure chaos of clippings 😂

OMG, I'm so grateful to you for breaking this down! I'm not Au, I don't *think* but being severely ADHD and hypersensitive, a lot of this makes so much sense to me! You're actually making sense of a big chunk of my life, which has always revolved around having things documented in ink, on paper. I know what you mean about losing trust in yourself or the systems you have in place. I work with a special software that nobody in my team really masters apart from me and when there's a big or an issue, I feel like my brain is glitching. Nobody understands my anxiety around it but for me systems like this are so important! Well, I won't change my journaling setup any time soon, because I love keeping work, personal planning and therapy notes separate, combining them would be too distracting. But I love how you explain documenting your coping mechanisms - my work notes are essentially a survival guide to my job. 😆

I can commiserate with the feeling of something is missing/not quite right with the old system. I just bought a new system of planners and I'm waiting anxiously for them to arrive. I love the Hobonichi Weeks and I'm keeping that, but my other notebook just feels too big, yet I don't have enough space to write random things. Not sure what prompted the change for me. Maybe because it's spring, maybe because it's almost April (my birthday month), which is traditionally the month for new beginnings in Japanese culture.

I relate so much to seeing the whole week at a glance. I used to bullet journal for years and would just do daily planning for that, but once I tried the Hobonichi Weeks this year I can never go back, weekly planning works so much better. I am struggling to use ANY planner/journal right now and these videos make me really want to try the Cousin, but I'm wary of taking the jump in case it's just FOMO, especially since I know that A5 books have always felt too big for me.

As a neurodivergent person, your weekly videos are such a comfort! So exciting to see you in the cousin, I've been in one since the start of this year (I used a weeks last year) and having space for plans, commonplace and journaling all in one book has been a huge relief. I use the Avec because I tape a lot of things into my book and knew the full size would end up feeling overwhelming. So excited to see how you end up liking the cousin!!

I abandoned my weeks and moved into a sterling ink common planner, which I've been loving. It has the monthly and weekly layouts like a cousin, but then there are just a ton of blank spaces for commonplacing or bullet journaling or whatever and all in minimalist black and white. I liked the cousin, but the days being pre-made stressed me out. I felt like I was wasting it if I didn't write much and then some days I needed more space.

My favourite is the journal from Supernatural. I also use a (Filofax) ring binder as my planner / bullet journal / daily notes / etc. I love the versatility of it, how personalisable it is. You can hole punch any kind of paper, and put it in the binder. You want to continue a topic 3 month ago? No problem. Just find the section and file more paper there. You can also buy plastic sleeves for memorabilia you don't want to punch.

none of this is a coincidence, I had a crisis of my own because of reasons and felt like I needed more space to take control back and ordered a hobonichi cousin AND GUESS WHAT I TORE THE MIDORI COVER AS WELL. anyways, before that I ordered the field notes and had an identity crisis. I bought the bunny weeks before march actually, thanks to you! I have very bad depression and anxiety and writing in my hobonichi weeks has been very useful and made my life slightly easier. I found a reseller here in finland who sold them and the only weeks they had was the bunny one and it made me smile. I like how it fits perfectly in my black Marimekko Gratha purse, like it's the perfect size. It feel so nice to know i can just grab my purse and put everything i need inside. Also my favourite big notebook/journal has to be from the game Uncharted. There was something about taking that book out and go through it.

Hi! I’m new to your channel and my own back and forth with journals this year makes your video quite relatable. If I may, a few suggestions for Weeks? The size is great for tracking things like mood, attention, if you’ve had time to yourself or with others, pain, ect. You can use the weekly layout for that. If you have really pretty paper, you can cut it and put it between your Midori cover and the cousin cover. Lastly, I don’t know how much they bleed through, but there are dot markers. I forget the brand - starts with a K - but you can look on Jetpens for reference and order them closer to home. All the best on your progress during these tumultuous times!

The jump scare 🤣 I've been using Weeks this year on your reccommendation, and it's actually working for me, but I think because I've altered your system slightly when I started. I too need everything all in one place. I can't juggle multiple notebooks on top of my multiple sketchbooks--my shoulders are too weak 😅 I've just been using the notes pages towards the back to catch all of my notes, idea/thoughts, and commonplace. I take SIGNIFICANTLY less notes than you do it appears. So far, I'm only 53 pages in, so I don't think I'll use them all this year, but we'll see what kind of special interests take hold of me 😬 Happy you found more star stickies! And hope this new system provides you the comfort and confidence you've been looking for.

not to already derail your new notebook system, but have you looked into the traveler's notebook? there's two sizes, but you can also customise the entire system to your liking. i really like the regular size and the grid notebooks the traveler's company offers because the grid isn't obnoxious (although it's a little large for my personal preferences) . they have two different weekly notebooks as well. i really think you might enjoy it because you can dedicate little notebooks entirely to your commonplace, special interests, etc, and separate them accordingly while keeping everything organised and changing them out often (archiving them) and since it's all in one place, it might even mitigate that need to get comfortable.

this sounds like a great system and im glad youve found something that's going to work for you megan! i especially like the contents/index trick with the dated pages, that's so clever! i agree with your sentiment about needing to have everything in one place, and actually i have the same thing in my notebook. at the moment i'm using a simple dotted notebook and adding my own weekly spreads and commonplace entries as i go - so it's kind of similar to what you're describing here in that you're journaling, planning, and commonplace-ing as you progress through the notebook. (i find this is a nice way to situate your commonplace entries in time without having to date them). i also use a traditional diary/calendar to keep track of events as drawing up calendars in my notebook is too time-consuming, and in general my method is a bit time-consuming as i have to draw every grid and all the dates in every week, which does fit into my schedule currently, so it's fine, but in future i'm thinking of switching to a hobonichi notebook (just wish there was a way i could see one in a shop before buying! im quite a tactile person so i cant really get a good idea of them online). i was originally going to go for a weeks as i use a similar weekly set-up to you (thanks for the inspo!!

I'm happy that you found a new system that can work for you instead of against you in terms of space. The first unhinged journal I thought of was Arthur Spiderwick's field guide. I loved those books growing up, even though they were way too short for my taste. Am going to stick to my weeks planner at least for now, since I was looking for a planner with less space to challenge myself and to not have to worry about filling everything out (I still have a bit of room left every now and again in the planner due to having a bad week etc.). Your videos are enjoyable regardless of which planner you're using and I hope the system is going to exceed your expectations and be just what you need right now. Thanks for the video!

I don’t really do planning, mostly journaling and commonplacing, this year I went for the A6 day-free and two months into the year I finished it. 😅 I use my notebook always as an all in 1. I am currently in a A6 Stalogy, but I don’t know it will last the rest of the year. Maybe. This year is the first time I decided to go for the A6 as for years I have been using Moleskine, which is a narrow A5, and that’s because I started using fountain pens and I needed a better paper - as much as I love Moleskine notebooks. Also, I started using margins (because of you) and I needed a grid, but Moleskine grids are painfully dark. It hurts. Regarding the dots, also adopted them because of you, and they work so beautifully. The thing is that indeed finding the stickers is hard and expensive. I have been considering using markers instead. I might try it next month. My topics are: •Dreams (is important for me to keep track of those because my mind is interesting to say the least😅) •Special interest. •Quotes and references •Important (like family stuff and milestones when it comes to my son, trips, and just life happenings worth coming back to) Next year I might try the Cousin. For planning I have a little agenda I got on AliExpress, I take it everywhere and there’s where I write down quick notes or outline ideas, I also keep track of school related stuff and sometimes a little bit of work. Is my adulting notebook, is freeing because I don’t try to make it pretty, that is just so I don’t forget things and to keep myself and my child alive. My journal is for my personal time and to keep my mind healthy, because neurospicy people need a brain dump. My adhd and autism demand me to write things down.

I really get what you’re saying here because I’ve never ever been able to use more than one book at a time. If I try using two books I always get to anxious about what goes with what notebook. My planner, my journal entries, everything commonplace it all goes into one journal. I basically use the bullet journal method except I set up all 12 months in advance, so I can plan ahead. It’s a little different for me though because I don’t have enough going on to necessitate a weekly so most of my tasks are in my monthly or my daily.

You sold me so well on the Hobonichi weeks that I do feel the tiiiiniest bit abandoned now haha but I love hearing your reasoning for switching to the Cousin. I love my Weeks book very much, and I still think it's a perfect fit for me as someone just now starting with commonplacing. I got it this February, and I bring it everywhere I go because of the size, which is a super important feature personally. I also think the longer pages make an interesting canvas to lay out information, and I am having a lot of fun with it. I do completely relate to the small journal space though, I keep having to "edit-down" my daily journal entries. I'll definitely miss seeing how you use the Weeks, but at the same time, I'm so excited to see what you'll collect in a much bigger notebook :D

i just switched to a system similar to this but i journal digitally lol. your system has inspired me for years now so it’s funny we both had a crisis and switched from the weekly system to the cousin system at the same time. we love an autistic life crisis 🥲 which if anyone sees this and wants to didgital journal but is worried about confidentiality i recommend using goodnotes and turning off the icloud setting! your journal will only be on that one device and won’t sync to the goodnotes cloud so they can’t see your information. the caveat is that if something happens you’ll never get it back, but that’s the same with physical. i’m conclusion it’s not good to lose your stuff whatever you do. 🥲 but being autistic i have to adapt to my situation a lot and having to keep buying journals was getting expensive and since i already had an ipad i use that now because i can make my own layouts inspired by other journals whenever i need to adapt to life. i do miss physical books but with how quick my brain moves and how slow my hand is and changing systems a lot, it’s the best option for me. just thought i’d throw it out there in case anyone struggles the same way i do with physical journals :)

Glad you're excited with the new book! Totally understand the need for everything to be in one place, my struggle is that I never find a book or app that has the organization that I need for everything to be there. So it is very exciting when we find a tool that works for us

Hi Megan. It was you and your channel that inspired me to get a techo and finally buy the fountain pen I've wanted for years. Sure enough I fell in love with writing with the pen as I thought I might. I got an A6 japanese techo as I was attracted to the very portable size. However, like many users, I find it now to just be a little too cramped. Shortly after starting to use the A6 book I bought an A5 blank notebook just to practice my cursive and writing in general. I still use my techo for daily writing, but I know my next book will be the A5. I just need more space! More space for writing, formatting, and decoration. I probably go a little crazy with stickers sometimes, but decorating comes in fits and starts for me.

i absolutely loved this video!! I find it really interesting how you set your journals up and how you change things around when they aren't working for you anymore. The primary colour dot stickers you use i've seen before in Hobbycraft of all places, as well as the gold stars i think? and my favourite unhinged journal in TV that isn't really a journal is the massive Grimoire in Charmed the TV series 😅i already can't wait for the next video 🥰

I know this is an older video but i’m on the hunt for a Hobonichi for a planner/journal combo and thought I’d weigh in. The Day-Free is a contender for me BECAUSE it doesn’t have the weekly pages. I want something that has the monthly calendar spreads for planning appointments/birthdays, but my life is simply not busy or exciting enough to need weekly layouts for planning 😅 I wish the Day-Free had more blank pages to use as a journal, or that there was a Cousin without the weekly pages.

Really appreciate your explanations and thoughts about your new notebook. I love the idea of a commonplace book in order to be able to gather all those things in one place. Mine are all over the place right now.

you just gave me the final nudge into a very expensive purchase o_o i'm so excited. just ordered my own hobo cusin jan english edition:)) gonna backfill a lot from my a6 i desperately needed more space, and the amount of notebooks i were keeping to contain all of the information i wanted was not okay anymore lol. v excited to have it all in one space

I'm inherently skeptical about aesthetic planning and journaling on KZbin. There's nothing wrong with it as an art or a performance art, but it often loses its practicality for me as a viewer not making money from planning/journaling. However, your aesthetic is clean and functional; the best of both worlds. The way you lay out your pages makes sense for someone who relies on the book for scheduling and mental clarity. A huge fan of the commonplace-ing for special interests (ADHD here, special interests: Harry Potter, Marine Life, Linguistics) and writing in loops is very soothing so it's nice to give yourself space to do that.

I have the exact opposite system where new topics or things to track get put in their own notebooks and then sit abandoned on a shelf with five pages filled out for the rest of time... not my finest decision but I can't seem to stop lol

oh god, this is such a reassuring video because, i abandoned my weeks and field notes for a weekly hourly a5 planner system. i got the passion planner for cheap to try the big weekly layout to see if i would do well, and i do noT recommend the passion planner but i do recommend the big weekly. but i got it as prep for when the hobonichi july-dec avec goes on sale in june because how horribly expensive. i will probably end up doing the avec system. also yes, the midori a5 cover fits perfect, for my hobonichi notebook a5, i slipped black construction paper as the cover between the notebook and cover and its the perfect aesthetic without paying for a cover aha. pls don’t be too hard on yourself for abandoning the weeks ship! maybe we will go back to it someday!

32:15 I'd love to own one but for my journalistic needs they are currently out my price range. At least all the ones I've seen are. I just use those £4 jotters out of Tesco. How much do you tend to spend on these books when you buy them? (No judgement of course)

I have been planning in a filofax malden personal size for a while now, with on and off consistency, for the sheer fact that it can have "everything" --- my biggest issue was 1) space and 2) the fact that I often forget to organize the pages I take out of this extremely overstuffed binder to make ever more space. This video has really got me thinking about trying this system out because it seems to also cover all my bases WITH the added benefit of it not having to move all the pages out two months later so... very tempted. I might try to make a tester-system in my a5 midori notebook to see if the hugeness of it would work or not..

You just unlocked a childhood memory with a great big book of everything! I loved that show! (Stanley) I’m living in so many notebooks right now! 😅 from passport size to a4. I’m a mood reader so I guess maybe a mood journaler too? Although I do feel ashamed sometimes for all those half filled notebooks 😢 (promise they’ll all get filled someday…maybe) what’s been working for me at the moment is my hobo weeks for work, and an a5 blank notebook for everything else. Book quotes, doodles, and journal entries. We’ll see how it goes, I’m so tempted by this a5 hobonichi now 😂

I have thought about the idea of a hobonichi planner for a while now but they cost so much 😭 i think I'll try make my own system with this layout and if it sticks until the 2024 one comes out, ill consider buying one. Because i still haven't found the perfect system for me. Right now i use a weekly passion planner, but i try to do too much. A cousin would be the perfect way to combine planning and journaling without mixing them up, like the weekly for tasks and the daily for "everything else", so collecting, commonplacing, journaling etc

I love how you’re using the Cousin and can’t wait to see more. I have the Cousin Avec from years ago, but never used it because it was just too large for me. My dream journal would hold my planning, thoughts, and common placing while still fitting into a pocket. 😂 Not sure that’s possible, though, so I’ll have to stick with using two notebooks (I’m using a similar system to your Hobonichi Techo a6 system a while back-I like that I can slip one or both notebooks into a bag when I’m on the go). I hope PayPal releases your funds soon. How frustrating! I’ve heard enough horror stories about them taking people’s money that I don’t use them anymore. I was so looking forward to buying some ghosts! But I can be patient. ❤

Is it wrong to say my favorite unhinged journal is the Necronomicon from The Evil Dead/Ash lore? I have often thought having a cover for my Cousin to look like that would be super cool. Makes a lot of sense to me, Megan - I'm not surprised that you feel the need for a reset and to take control of something after recent events. Good to hear you sounding enthusiastic. Now, at the risk of sounding like a very sick puppy indeed, the book(s) from cinema that immediately came to mind were John Doe's notebooks in Se7en. Well, I do have a legitimate interest in handmade artists' books and the suchlike. 🙂
