One of the most important and significant documentaries to be made. Goodes your journey is a journey of truth. What started with you calling out the bad insult you heard escalated to a fully fledged attack on your blackness and identity. You were booed incessantly at every game for holding the ball, for scoring a goal, for your simple participation. The boos and the insults hurled at you were more than just the harmless booing that happens when the other side scored. This was directed crowd racism at you speaking out about the truth of the indigenous experience. You were called a bully- when you were bullied- you were called a sissy when you were brave- you were sniggered at and humiliated and your amazing contributions to the game dissipated in one moment of truth for you. You are better than AFL- a game of toxic masculinity, of sponsorship prostitutes of sexist racist and misogynists that populate the stages, the footy shows, the shock jocks and Radio waves. You were skilled but your skills are wasted on those fields that hold no loyalty or respect for your sportsman ship or talents. This is because the majority of Australian particularly white Australian men are some of the most disgusting pathetic men I have ever known or met. Great you opened your eyes to the truth of your people and their suffering. You are not broken you are aware. Congratulations!

Daniel Cher almost half of your last comment was made up about you pretending to be offended by the word dog in an attempt to place yourself on a higher moral ground. I don't think you are offended by people calling you dogs, I just think you are full of shit. You say Adam Goodes was getting booed for 2 years because he lacks game ability and he's stupid, literally both of those are wrong. He is getting booed because white Australia does not like getting reminded of how it treats Aboriginal people and wants to hide it all away. This is evident in the way schools teach colonisation, about how a heroic adventurer captain cook discovered Australia with no mention of Aboriginal people. When what really happened is cook invaded Australia and shot dead a dozen Aboriginal people and forcefully stole the land, then he let all the convicts and settlers from Europe come in and commit genocides, rape the women and enslave the children. And today Aboriginal people are stolen from their parents at birth. Whether you like to admit it or not but white Australia still wants no trace of Aboriginal left in Australia, and when an indigenous man voices his concerns about this he is ridiculed and attacked. See if you are Aboriginal then I really suggest educating yourself on this subject instead of pretending like white Australia is getting 'oppressed' by a population that makes up 3% of our country
@gentleheart33844 жыл бұрын
@@danielcher9433 As an aboriginal, my life has been affected by the stolen/lost children. My mother was one of those children. She has now passed away, but she was ashamed and embarrassed by her aboriginality. She was brought up in white society, and was taught that the indigenous are bad. I even remember her applying whitening cream to her skin every night, although at the time, didn't see the significance in this. She denied her aboriginality her entire life. My brother and I grew up thinking we were adopted. We had darker skin then our parents. Mum used to tell us she was Spanish. It didn't stop the taunts at school though, and I was continually subjected to the usual racist names. As I grew into adulthood, I noticed small things like going shopping with (white) friends. They would be offered shopping bags, and although I purchased more items, would be refused. Job offers rebuked once I appeared in person. Racial slurs, denial of private rentals. Still to this day, even in my workplace I experience racism. Some people don't want me preparing their food. My skin must contain some sort of black fella virus. My brother and I researched our family history 10 years ago, confirming what we had always suspected based on our treatment by many in communities. We found we are one of 250 survivors across Australia from the slaughtered Woolwonga Tribe in the NT. It is reported that there was only 1 or 2 survivors when the Govt police came in and slaughtered my ancestors in one hit. All my life, my brother and I felt disconnected from our family and society. There was something missing in our life, but we didn't know exactly what that was. We both have always felt very connected to the land, loved going out bush and roughing it. So it annoys me when people try to minimize the impact to indigenous from Govt policies set back decades ago. At 50 years of age I am still meeting cousins I never knew I had. A handful talk of our much loved Great Granny "Shotgun Nellie" who was quite a character. I never knew my grandmother. I met my Uncles for the first time in 2014. We are slowly bringing our mob back together. To hear of the treatment that my relatives went through and the stories they tell me about my mother breaks my heart. My mother hated the indigenous. She was 100% racist. But that had been drummed into her from her white caretakers, including the fact they let her believe that she had to become white or else she was worthless, lazy and a nohoper. Mum was a very hard woman, and was emotionally abusive. It was only finding out about her past, that we finally understood why she was that way. And it totally broke my heart that we never had a chance to have a truthful discussion with her about our ancestors. Being called a monkey isn't because your a bad at something. It is a total racial slur and uncalled for. There are other ways to let people know you don't think they are any good at football. As an indigenous, I have not seen repression of white men. I have experienced white privilege being accepted for jobs and services over the phone, but then refused when they meet me. Nothing had changed between the phone call and my showing up. I have seen and experienced repression of indigenous, and other races that have migrated to Australia. We absolutely are a racist country. Anyone who can stand up and publicly bring this issue to the public deserves commendation. I don't care about Adams football ability. I do care about people being treated differently due to their skin colour and being oppressed. I truly believe that any indigenous that has some sort of fame stand ups publicly to racism will always have haters coming forward to say that, no, its not about race, its because that person is attention seeking, poor sportsman, etc. Opinions are based on what you see publicly of that person, and should instead listen to their stories, and those that also come forward and confirm similar stories. Its about racism, pure and simple.

A harrowing but uplifting and vitally important document that should be seen and listened to - carefully and without prejudice - by everyone, not just Australians. That said, it did miss making one important point - one that was alluded to but sadly not openly stated. I think it was either Gilbert McAdam or Michael O'Loughlan (or Adam himself) who said "Nobody is born racist." It also came to mind when Eddie was trying to explain his 'King Kong' faux pas. None of us is born racist. But I believe that, in all of us, the racism is there, certainly if we were born and grew up in environments where it was and is prevalent. We may be appalled by overt racism and want nothing to do with racists or their behaviour. Yet there may be times when the racism we had no idea lurked within us suddenly presents itself, in subtle or overt ways. If it does, and we recognise that it has, we should be unafraid to admit it, to make amends for it and to want to eliminate it from our thinking. And it should be safe for us to apologise without being ostracised or 'cancelled'. If not, the default response will be denial - who in their right mind would put their head in a noose by owning up to their own racism, however unintended? Sometimes the most damaging and harmful blows are inflicted subtly, unconsciously, without deliberate malice. We may do a slight double-take when an Indigenous person appears beside us. We may move away slightly when one sits beside us on the tram, or be suddenly aware of the door handle we're about to grip after that black fella opened the door. We may be astonished that Nova Peris is casually referred to as "n***er" by her own team-mate, who then says she had no idea it was racist. But that has happened, and keeps happening, every day in the indigenous experience. (Until my late teens I still thought 'abo' was a term of endearment, rather like 'ambo' for a paramedic.) There was nothing subtle about what Adam endured from the crowds, social media and the populist TV 'entertainment' industry. From them, the message was brutally clear - "We don't like uppity n***ers!" We want our Aboriginal sport stars to be 'good', appreciative of the opportunities we've given them - like Lionel Rose, Cathy Freeman and Evonne Goolagong-Cawley. We don't want boat-rockers, troublemakers and 'flogs' who try to breach the hull of our denial. We want to maintain our ignorance in safety. And we don't want to do what First Nations people desperately need us to do - approach all of Australian history (ALL of it) from an Aboriginal perspective. It's called 'walking a mile in their shoes', and it's damned hard to do, as I think John Longmire admitted. If you were angered by this film because you think it was blaming you for the past, or pushing a black-arm band view of history, or being 'divisive', watch it again. And this time, listen carefully to what ALL the indigenous voices are saying. Listen also to Horse, Paul Roos and Nathan Buckley. It might change your perspective.

They were saying that Australia gives people a place to call home a new beginning . But I say home if you are from anywhere. Home if your white Not if your aboriginal . I love Adam and have jumped to my feet at the MCG and cheered his incredible feats. My heart went out to Adam when he was booed so much. They are now saying the Goodes docos have struggled to get an audience. Did it occur to anyone that the filmmakers from the top down may have got it all a bit wrong? And that the booing of Adam was not so simple? Obviously some of those boo-ers were racists. But for the great part the boo-ers were not racists, just the bonehead part of the crowd who are at the football for a cathartic experience and who, if given the opportunity, will boo anyone from the opposite team. Because they love boo-ing. Not because they hated Adam. It's understandable that indigenous people are offended by the stupid booing of Adam. Obviously, when you've been subjected to racism, you're going to believe it's a factor in any friction or conflict you encounter. Stan Grant and the other filmmakers will remain convinced they have the right take. But the majority of Australians (many of diverse ethnic backgrounds) seem to feel the filmmakers didn't get the story quite right. Is this why the doco's are struggling and can't get a broader, more informed audience? It might be because most people don't buy the message they are selling.

This is a clumsy whitefella explanation, but it has to do with traditional beliefs around the sacredness of those who have passed. If memory serves me correctly, when a member of a tribe has passed, their name is not to be spoken again. When Europeans came with their recordings, this was extended to include images and recordings as well. Please someone who can explain this better, jump in and do a better job than I have in explaining. Oh, and by the way this is an outstanding doco that has so much to say about what it is to be Australian, the uniquely Australian way in which we are both tolerant and racist to the core, and the strangely sacred place sport holds in our culture.

I am not certain if this is applicable for all, as I am not of indigenous descent. I read an article recently that said that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples avoid mentioning a deceased loved one as it is believed that to do so essentially traps their spirit from moving on. The documentary is misleading. You have to make a distinction between regular booing of a player, and this ongoing booing. The ongoing booing only started in a 2015 game against Hawthorn, and only became an ongoing thing because the media assumed it must be racist, and so other fans kept doing it out of spite, or as a meme. Even the Sydney Swans captains asked for less, or no media coverage on Adam Goodes because they presumably knew it was being media fuelled.
@adriannejones96714 жыл бұрын
Whoknowsuknow if fans are booing someone out of spite because they know the media coverage is fueling assumptions about racism, that is proof that those fans are racist. If the fans were not racially motivated they would know not to boo a player who is being referred to as a victim of racial bullying in the media. They would shut the fuck up and not act like children. Your logic collapses in on itself.

@gtesremos4 жыл бұрын
Upsetting to hear this in 2020, blessings to your friend! It's a mix of misinformation, ignorance and miseducation. New generations grow up learning from their elders, not knowing the Truth of Oneness with Nature so indigenous are laughed at for being witchy or "primitive" when they're more in touch with Reality than most white people (also because they've been misguided by the school curriculum/elders). Truth has been held back from us for so long by the Powers that be (Govs, business, gentry, old money, agriculture, pharmaceuticals etc etc.) that profit off the suppression of black countries since colonial/transatlantic slave trade times, but people like this dude in the spotlight help so much! We need to voice up when we hear such rubbishy talk and show them their rotten hatred in a calm manner, because it's via the mind and emotions that seeds of change are planted.

A documentary made by people who have no understanding of the game or the issues in play. Calling it racism makes a good story though and a neat fit with current social narrative. Crowd booing is essential in this game. If a player reacts to it he gets booed louder. The crowd loves booing and comes to the game to do that. Adam Goodes was great player but he also sometimes played for free kicks and this set the booing off in the beginning. Players have to ignore it. Until it's someone else's turn to cop it. Reacting to it instantly recharges it. Adam was in denial about how it all came about. Only some clubs booed him. Others didn't. That's kind of selective isn't it. It became more politically charged after the 13 year old was detained. Adam was compelled to use sport as a platform for political activism. On the other hand those supporters who booed did not want their game used a platform for race politics and made it known. Political activist Stan Grant, who also knows nothing about this game, grabbed the booing to use for his anti-Australian agenda - again, using the AFL competition as a platform for political activism. Which shows how far Stan is out of touch with the majority of other Australians. AFL is originally an aboriginal game and Australians love it even more for that reason. The booing happens at big games long and loud every week as it has for a hundred years. And the booing will continue for hundreds more. It's a sensational aspect of the atmosphere at games.
@avaallen54393 жыл бұрын
The booing was so intense toward Adam it caused him to retire. Have you ever been booed? Let alone every time you even went near the ball? To the point it was deafening and affecting your mental health to the point of developing depression? And yet you say it's a 'sensational aspect of the game'. You're white, so you've never experienced racism in your life. And because you're white, you don't get a say in what is deemed racist or not. Adam, like pretty much every other First Nations AFL player, was called so many horrific racial slurs, on and off the field, and experienced so much harassment from crowds, yet you say that 'supporters didn't want their game to be a platform for race politics'? How can they say that, yet continue to shout horrific racial slurs directed at Indigenous players? The fact you are even rebutting this documentary, when you have never been booed, or experienced racial vilifaction in your life, just goes to show how ignorant Australia is. No matter who it is, if someone says that your booing and words are deeply hurting them, you stop. But no, booing is 'sensational'? Do you realise how insensitive that sounds?
