The Avengers was originally released on DVD from A and E which was the cable network that also aired them in reruns.

The Avengers first aired in 1961, but the Emma Peel episodes are only from 1965 to 1968. And yes, there was one more season after Diana Rigg left as well, in ‘68-‘69.

Nice set at a good price; FYI The Avengers was produced by ABC (an independent production company) and not the BBC. It ran from 1961 to 1969 but i don't think it was sold to the US until the mid 60s. Before Diana Rigg (Emma Peel) there was Honor Blackman (Cathy Gale) best known for being Pussy Galore in Goldfinger and after Diana there was Linda Thorson (Tara King). Currently its not on in the UK, although, every 4/5 years it usually gets a re-run.

I got the set not quite a year ago at Amazon for about $24.99. Mine's in two separate cases and each disc is on its own individual spindle, no stacking. Getting this set was a dream come true for me since this was my favorite show when I was in the fifth grade--the absolute high point of the week for me. Every Friday night at 9:00 central time I was in total bliss for one hour. This lasted until Diana Rigg left and was replaced by Linda Thorson (by then the show had moved to, I think, Wednesday night) by which time the show pretty much lost its appeal. But now thanks to DVD I can relive those wonderful Mrs. Peel episodes whenever I want.

My friend bought this set at FYE at half price. Even in the store, you could hear the discs banging around inside, off of their spindels. He bought it anyway, hoping the discs would not be damaged, because the price was so good. Around $30. Anyway, tonight we cracked open the set and while several of the discs were indeed dislodged from their spindel, they were not damaged fortunately. We watched the first two epiodes from disc 1 and they were just wonderful. The black and white definitely adds a gritty tone to the picture, making it seem like a mini-movie rather than a tv series. And Mrs. Peel is just can't-take-your-eyes-off-of-her in virtually every scene she appears in. What a sleek, fabulous, sexy, mod wardrobe she wears throughout. Anyway, would like to hear your opinions of some of the episodes once you've seen them.

Dean of DVD Great set. My better half saw it on that sale and immediately bought it for my birthday. I have to wait til March but very excited to get that set. Great overview, I love the box. Murdersville said about everything I was gonna say on the series. I grew up watching reruns of this series from beginning to end. The Avengers and The Saint were two of my favorite shows growing up.

Aaron, I have not had a chance to watch any of The Avengers set yet (still churning through HBO's The Wire DVD set), but I'll pop one in to check the quality soon. Studio Canal normally does a decent job, so I am hopeful.
