The average human body temperature is 37 degrees Celsius, or 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit... right? Well, new studies have uncovered that the average human body temperature is actually lower than that...and it’s dropping.

In 1851 a German doctor named Carl Wunderlich conducted a yearslong study. He went room to room in his hospital with a thermometer, taking the temperatures of some 25,000 different patients to try and pin down the average human body temperature. And he did, seventeen years later, when he published a paper with that well-known metric of 37 degrees! He also gave us the first quantitative measurement for determining if someone has a fever. 38 degrees and above. And then for the next 140 years, we just accepted this number as correct.
Despite the fact that Dr. Wunderlich collected this data using a comically large, foot-long thermometer that had to be held in a patient’s armpit for 20 minutes. Because believe it or not, portable thermometers small enough fit under your tongue weren’t invented until 1866.
So it wasn’t until the 1990s that another doctor decided to revisit this question using more modern equipment. And he found that yeah, the average human body temperature is ACTUALLY around 36.8 degrees Celsius.

If only doctors got the memo. None of them believe me when I tell them that new research disproved the 98.6° average. As someone who often runs low grade fevers (99.5-100.3), this lower average suggests that my fevers may not be so low grade after all. I experience them as regular fevers, but because they are below 100.5°, doctors take them less seriously.

One of the weirdest subjects so far on this channel. I recall some 30-odd years ago that the "standard" or "normal" (feverless) body temperature was mentioned by doctors in my country as 36.6 °C (97.9 °F). The 37 °C / 98.6 °F value was also occasionally mentioned but as a _rounded up value,_ and _not_ as an exact value. 36.6 °C is just 0.2 °C higher than the latest reported average value of 36.4 °C, a difference that might be within the margin of error. I also recall when measuring my own temperature values in the 36.5 °C - 36.7 °C range whenever I had no fever. From 37 °C onward I was slightly warm, so 37 °C was never my "normal" temperature. I fully realize that I my sample of 1 has no value for an *average* body temperature, but like I said the 36.6 °C / 97.9 °F standard value was often mentioned by doctors 30+ years ago, pediatricians specifically in that era. Therefore I strongly doubt we are "cooling down" as this video appears to suggest.

Might be increased consumption of carbohydrates. I'm in my 60s, for most of my life I ate the standard high carb American diet, was healthy, exercised a lot, had a sedentary overweight period, the entire time my body temp (under tongue) was 97.1 (the number I remember once digital thermometers were common). Over a year ago I switched to a ketogenic diet, and when I started breaking down my macronutrients into numbers, discovered that I wasn't yet keto, I kept records so that I could be 'keto'. My calories are consistently 70% fats 5-10% carbs. My body temp shifted up towards the the magic 98.6 number. I think it might be worth someone qualified to investigate. My shift seemed so obvious and consistent with diet it shouldn't be difficult to test. Two other related factors. First I no longer 'hit the wall,' I used to, during a three hour kayak paddle, 'hit the wall' consistently at 90 minutes. Since keto, I eat nothing before a paddle, I go out for 3-4 hours, I feel consistent the entire time, loading my kayak on my car at the end is the same as loading it in the morning. When I was carbs this was always a struggle. Second, I still feel the same level of chill, wear the same sweaters and jackets, still sleep with the same number of comforters, this hasn't changed at all.

In my country, we actually use 36.8 degree Celsius as standard body temperature in medical practice with an error of 0.5 degrees on either side. This has been practiced here for a very long time.
@VGAstudent
@VGAstudent 3 жыл бұрын
One obvious reason for the current drop in historical body temperature during medical procedures, is that there are intraveinous medicines that are actually delivered below the persons body temperature in a hospital setting, where the warmed products (or chilled - depending on if the medicine was kept in a refrigerator or not) would actually be introduced to the body, and actually cooling them down. This is a real problem for people getting saline injections to help raise blood-pressure with victims of extreme de-hydration. You can actually see patients shivering to warm themselves back up while they huddle beneath thin and almost clinically useless blankets in excessively air conditioned waiting rooms.

My theory is that we are becoming cold blooded because global average temperatures are rising. It's also why we are getting bigger (taller, not wider!). This would explain why it is also being observed in remote tribes, which don't have other common factors.

If you are fortunately enough to remember what your oral temperature was as a teenager and then know what it is now then great. Having a baseline for YOU is what's important. For example, my normal oral temperature when I was in my late 20s all through my 30s was 98.2 to 98.6. Now in my 50s it is 97 to 97.9. Why? Because after contracting pneumonia 7 years ago my metabolism took a beating and my cortisol increased and then drastically decreased. Long story short, I feel like crap most of the time. Why? Because not only is my cortisol low, but my reverse T3 is elevated which in turn blocks free T3 from accessing the cells. In other words, I am hypothyroid. So, while 98.6 may not be the normal for everyone, it would help to know a baseline when you are healthy in your younger years so you have something to compare as you get older. Older people in general do have lower body temperatures when compared to when they were younger. However, that doesn't mean it's normal. A lot to this, but as an exercise physiologist with over 27 years of experience in the health industry, I figured I'd cover the very basics!

My assumption would be that the climate is changing and we are slowly adapting to it thus decreasing our temperature genetically every generation.
