Today we dive deep into Netflix's Baby Reindeer created by Richard Gadd and breakdown the series. Baby Reindeer is a true story about Richard Gadd being stalked by a woman callled Martha. In this video we review the show and explain various scenes in the movie. We also react to the drama surrounding the real life martha and Darrien as Fiona Harvey (the real martha) has done a news interview talking about Richard Gadd and the netflix show Baby Reindeer..

@toby544. and the whole point of the show was to show the impact that stalking has on people’s lives, it was also a prominent point in the show that Martha was not well and he wanted to help her. I get that people wanna know the real life Martha but it’s so disturbing when you think past social media and realise this is someone’s life. And don’t even get me started on how they responded to the sa in the show

@@montygotlost6812 I personally don’t get why they want to know who Martha is. I think one of the whole points in the show is it could be anyone really- it get the initial curiosity, but I cannot Cathy how someone can’t stop themselves midway through typing the first search into google and go ‘on wait, this is probably what Martha did when she tried to figure out who Richard was’. That being said I think it’s interesting that the show has both shown and proved how easy it is for a struggling individual to start a spiral similar to Martha’s; in the show it’s started with a cup of tea, in real life it’s started by someone watching a Netflix series.

I agree with you on how bizarre it is that people are looking for Martha instead of Darrien. He is an absolute monster who deserves to spend many years in prison for what he did to Richard and likely some others. He is known for doing this kind of thing to people and from that, I doubt Richard was the first or the last. Fiona absolutely did wrong but she needs help, "Darrien" needs to face what he has done.

But speaking as someone who has been stalked and harassed by a narcissistic person, personally a lot of the body language and way she speaks just screams NPD to me. A good example from her interview is how she would say one thing, and almost immediately contradict herself. "I never watched the show, but I can describe everything in great detail". & "He's a homosexual, but he fancies me"???? And the way she belittles his struggles with his sexual assault. "His ALLEGED assault." "Whether his assault was something he made up in his mind or not..." Even the jabs at both him, and anyone associated with him, sends off red flags for me. "Well he is a homosexual..." "... There's a fat gal that's supposed to be me." 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 (Also, sidenote: should a kid even watch this show?)

@@cgi_angel6001 Yes, I agree she does show signs of one of the dark triad disorders. That being said, I didn't say she was innocent. I said he played into it more than he let on, at least for the first couple episodes because I didn't watch beyond that and I do believe the story was very sensationalized for TV. Again, I have no doubt she harassed him relentlessly and her behaviors are not justified. One thing I appreciate about the show is how honest he is about the ways in which he may have fed into her behavior. It takes guts to admit because some ppl think that means he is to blame, he isn't. And no, definitely not an appropriate show for kids but I didn't know that when we turned it on and she didn't watch past the first episode. But anyways most kids are watching way worse than the first episode of that show. The things I hear other kids talk about is disgusting but yeah, I wouldn't have even let her watch the first episode had I known how sick it got as the show progressed.

I was a victim of stalking for 2 years. I can't watch or read most things that focus around stalking (you on netflix is one I can't watch) because they can be quite triggering for me. I'm considering giving this a try though. From what I've heard it doesn't glorify stalkers like a lot of shows, books and movies do. What I went through for those two years I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. I lost my job, my home, friends, my safe places and my stable mental health plummeted. It's be nearly 9 years since it all went to court and that part of my life still affects me, even now. I can't go out when it's dark, certain types of men (height, hair colour, build etc) can make me panic before I realise it's not him and I have no trust in the justice system anymore. He got away with what he did to me and another girl. I got a restraining order with no end date on it and found out 2 years later that he had been locked up for stalking a further 3 girls after me. Justice failed a lot of people that day. I hope I manage to watch this, because I want someone to make people understand how destructive being a victim of stalking is. It ruined my entire life and I'm still not over it now. I hope Richard Gad is ok and dealing better than I have. Love you dude, as always an amazing video. Apologies for the essay! I don’t think I ever actually cared about who Martha was, Martha could have be anyone. Social media has perpetuated stalking tendencies and tried to normalise them- whether that be ‘stalking your crush on social media’, DMing celebrities or influences regularly even without replies, the weird rise of people showing their security systems, etc etc. I’ll be sympathetic here, because in a perfect world you could tell your story and no one would harass, stalk, and threaten the people involved; but the world isn’t perfect, and if you’re someone with an audience you have to be careful with what you put out there. I do think Gadd was a naive in making the characters so incredibly similar to alleged real life counterparts, as well as stating it’s based on his experience- especially as it is on a platform like Netflix that also has shows like ‘don’t fu*k with cats’ where ‘internet sleuths’ track down an individual who is actively causing harm. People like feeling like a hero, even if they aren’t. I know Gadd did show Martha as a victim and someone struggling, but it simply doesn’t look that way to the average person watching the show; every single piece of mainstream ‘stalker’ media presents them as villains- there’s never nuance, a backstory, or redemption- they purely exist as a hurdle for the protagonist to come out stronger at the end. You can’t just jump from that to assuming people will sympathise with the person because they’ve sat outside for days on end, live in a mess, etc- unfortunately objectivity just isn’t something the wide-scale internet is capable of. People can’t NOT separate themselves from Martha’s character- and as amazing of a job as the actress does, you simply can’t look for something you’ve never seen before. Trying to build the house when you can’t see the foundation will just result in a mess. I don’t think this show has caused people to become stalkers (or very least have similar tendencies as Martha), they all existed long before it ever aired. And to someone with an ounce of critical thinking skills the show is a masterpiece- it’s just a shame such an important story is being overshadowed by something so potently hypocritical and wrong.

6:03 this is exactly what I tell people I don’t want to do to my son. You are a human and you are allowed to not only experience things- good and bad-but you are allowed to have feelings about it! If you are sad cry, if you wanna hug someone do it! We are people! Humans are emotional and we are social creatures to pretend anything else is just denying our basic humanness. I mean I know it is easier said than done but I was raised that my dad would hurt me if he heard me cry-ever. Now as an adult I make sure my kids know that their feelings are valid. You are NOT sexist for having trauma, okay? You’d be sexist if you made generalizations about ALL women being a certain way, but that doesn’t seem the case here. A woman hurt you, badly, and without mental health help and a good support, it WILL skew your view on the opposite gender. As a chick myself, I just want to tell you I greatly respect you coming forward with your trauma. Again, your are not sexist, and you are not silly. We talked a lot about the show and i think we learned a lot about ourselves. Wich makes me think, the Show is very important, as stalking is Something people rarely talk about and if they do, they have this "it can't be this bad" opinion. Like baby reindeers friends I also think it was Impossible to change her character in a way she wouldn't be recognized. Of course she would know, as she sees he made a show about this. But all the others, have absolutely no right to know, let alone harrassing or threaten her. It's just so sad.

I recently finished watching Baby Reindeer. I found it very riveting, but it left me feeling pretty sad. When Gadd was stalked by Martha, and then groomed by Darrien, I automatically thought about the terrible people out there who easily take advantage of those who are lonely, too kind, or don't have strong boundaries. After the 1st episode I could relate to Gadd's character in the story. It reminds me of how I've also allowed treacherous people into my life when I was down & lonely.

17:40 it's not THAT outrageous given how little effort was made to hide "Martha's" real identity. The one thing you could legally do is cast someone who looks a LOT like them, give them a totally different name and just have them talk the same etc. Then if they try to sue you they wouldn't be able to win because you weren't "saying it was them" whereas if you make it someone so totally different that nothing at all is the same you run the risk of accidentally making it look like someone it isn't and actually losing if you get sued by that person.

Weirdly, people did in real life the thing that the author said he didn't like doing, as in reporting martha but not darrien. Because as he said martha was mentally sick but Darrien was a dangerous manipulator, yet just like the show, people are going after martha yet they haven't put as much effort in identifying Darrien, which hey, I know harassing isn't a good thing but considering what we know throu the show about Darrien, he is a dangerous man and, in my opinion, even if the author didn't report him, that doesn't mean that he doesn't deserve to be reported because, the author didn't tell the police about what darrien did to HIM, but someone like Darrien could have had many more victims before and after him so, for other people's safety, the real life Darrien should be identified and jailed.

People haven’t changed in hundreds of years, a bit of emotion and they lose all sense of fairness and are will to burn the witch at the stake. I agree. Common sense seems to disappear when the media audience believe everything they see and hear from a combined factual and entertainment series. People can be fickle and jump on a the band wagon. What I want to know is why Richard Gadd is the self portrayed victim? He said himself he made mistakes and acted inappropriately at times. Effectively, he has chosen to do what he feels "Martha" did to him. He's outed her via a Netflix knowing she was mentally unwell at the time the issues occured. That makes him quite sick in the head actually. Quite frankly, I am glad Piers Morgan is giving the "real Martha" a right to reply. She has that right as she has been outed by Richard Gadd for views and attention. He's handled it all wrong. If anyone can get to the truth, it's Piers Morgan. He doesn't have an ulterior motive to get likes and popularity, he seeks the truth, He's well known for it and he is allowing for the public to get context on the other side of the story Richard Gadd is telling. It's only fair. Heck, even a mass murderer is represented in a court setting! There are 2 sides to every story.

I was always interested in the real life aspect of the story, but specifically the way that it was nice to know Gadd had made his own show and was more than likely not working with his abuser anymore. He was the main character and the fact that he's still living his life, means the story hasn't really ended. As for the villians, obviously Marther is ill and deserves a little consideration from us. Darian deserves nothing, but it is up to his victims to decided when/if they will ever out him.

I'd agree that it's pretty outrageous to just be like 'Oh you look like him. You did it.' Buuuut as you already said, he made sure Martha looked like the real woman behind his stalking, so when soooo many people are saying thinds like 'they look similar.' 'You can see the resemblance.' 'She looks just like her.' It's not too far a throw to assume he's done the same with the rest of the characters. Also he apparently briefly dated the woman who he had cast to play his ex girlfriend Teri.. so maybe there's a resemblance with those two too.
