This a game that needs to be played every year regardless of conference re-alignments and tv deals. These types of games/rivalries are what make/made college football amazing. It is a shame to see more and more of these games disappear every year now because of tv deals, NIL, conference re-alignments, etc...

How could you do a story about this rivalry and not mention the greatest burn, from the 1994 game. From the stadium announcer: “Ladies and gentlemen, there’s a tractor in the parking lot with its lights on. West Virginia license plate E-I-E-I-O.”

Pitt and West Virginia need to get this game back on every year. When they last played in 2011 and when the rivalry went on an 11 year hiatus, it sucked when rivalry week came around, and there was no Backyard Brawl. This game has so many memories for me watching it for the time I did. I was happy to see it return 2 years ago. They’ll play this year and next , before taking a 4 year break and resuming again in ‘29. I hope this game can get to being a regular again.

WVU has a two game deal with Alabama that's keeping the Backyard Brawl on hold. I'd rather play Pitt. I'm holding on to hope that the BIG12 siphon Pitt and VT from the ACC.

@@wvusmc with this changing landscape of conference realignment, who knows where schools will end up. I do hope this game comes back permanently. It would be cool, to get all of those FBS Northeast Independents playing again: Pitt, PSU, West Virginia, Boston College, Syracuse, etc...

Agreed, putting Syracuse in that "rivalry week" slot every year was annoying. lol (i think one or two years they had Miami that week, but that's not a true rival)

@@skidawg79 Pitt and Syracuse do have a lot of history, most recently their basketball rivalry has been well documented in terms of both teams being competitive, especially back in the old Big East days. The football rivalry, it's not where it used to be where both teams were top notch and pretty competitive. We will see about this year's game, because who knows The Pitt Syracuse game on 24th of October could mean something if both teams can continue early season success. Yeah in terms of the Pitt-WVU rivalry and Pitt-Penn State history, Syracuse and Pitt in football is nowhere near the level of those two, basketball, absolutely it is.

Dude, that was EPIC! Life long Pitt fan here and I will always remember the 13-9 win because Pitt was so gawd-awful that year and WVU was very, very good. I have never really hated WVU but that year I thought that loss couldn't have happened to a more douchebag of a coach in Rich 'Sell my soul to the highest bidder' Rodriguez. The way he left the Mountaineers for Michigan when poor ol' Rich lost his chance to coach in a National Championchip game was so despicable after his extension signing and his 'commitment' to the program at the beginning of the season. I was SO HAPPY that his time with Michigan was so bad.!

Went to Pitt from 97-01. I loved but hated that this game used to be played on Black Friday. Loved that it was at the end of the season, but hated that i could never go. I'm not from Pittsburgh, so I was always at home for the Thanks giving holiday. I did move back to Pittsburgh and got to go to a few WVU/Pitt games a few years after i graduated and it was always such a fun rival. Hope they keep it going. I know we have a 3 year hiatus coming up....lets make this every year!

this is very short-sighted.. i get your point, but pitt was independent for a long time and that mattered none to the importance of playing this game. modern day conferences still dont provide a big hurdle for this game.. they have OOC schedules every year. its all about the money and WV wont pony up because they think they should get more home games than pitt does. insane
