It’s only called “Ultimate” in the West. In Japan it’s called “Special” which doesn’t have a strong connotation of finality. Though with the way he’s handling the roster (everyone is here, multiple highly fan-requested characters, characters he meant to put in but missed their chance) it could seem like that. I think he just realizes that he can never top or do this again (all characters back) so he’s takin advantage of this one opportunity while he can. And he’s said as much in his columns.

The fact they approached him about Steve specifically makes me suspect they didnt give him a list and he had more free reign

I've always found it useless to predict Smash characters, especially recent ones, but even if he doesn't get in I think Crash is a likely choice. He has the perfect amount of history, recognisability, legacy, wow factor, recent popularity and prevelance on Nintendo systems to where, even though I want other characters way more, he is one of the few potential newcomers that could be justifiably argued for.

I'm really hoping for something big, personally my 3 big wants are Doomguy, Reimu, and Solaire. Doomguy being the main one, as FPS is the biggest genre in the industry and who better to be the first rep of it than the guy who both invented and mastered it. Also Doom has had a close relationship with Nintendo and us getting Miis of both Fallout and TES but not one of him yet seems like it points to him being a very real possibility. If he doesn’t, its still characters that Nintendo chose, not him. Whatever else they might do instead is still not his decision. Smash Ultimate is such an insane game w/ a legendary roster of characters in such a fun, amazing, well-designed game and the hype of going thru these reveals, these spectacles of getting these amazing characters like K. Rool, like Sephiroth, like Banjo and whatnot, even some of the fun ones like Pyra/Mythra & Min Min, plus the whole revelation of every veteran returning, there's so much palpable hype, excitement and just pure fun only Smash has managed to capture with its newcomers and given we're probably not getting that for many years to come until the next Smash Nintendo wants for whatever their next console may be, with or without Sakurai at the wheel, it is still bittersweet in a sense. Gonna miss the fun of seeing these CGI trailers for the first time and seeing these awesome and sometimes insanely requested/highly wanted characters get in. All good things come to an end.

Yeah. Kinda sad knowing that Ultimate after all of DLC fighters are announced will kinda level down in its terms of hype and excitement it brings. Don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean people won't play the game, or that tournaments won't bring any excitement to people wanting their favorite player to win, or the matches won't have you at the edge of your seat. But I think for the most part, the game will most likely trail down in the amount of popularity it gets for most of the base game. Definitely it will keep a decent following though. It's just an honest to goodness high quality game. And probably one of the best in terms of fun. (Also, Porky for Smash. Please. PLEASE.)

I honestly think Waluigi could be CP11 We’ve seen the “rules” made by fans to determine who’s “allowed to get in” broken multiple times by whoever Nintendo/Sakurai chooses next Even stuff that Sakurai has said couldn’t happen in the past has happened (Ridley is too big, Tekken combat can’t work in Smash) Just because something hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean it can’t

Sakurai has stated multiple times in the past that Waluigi and other Assist Trophy characters aren't meant to become fighters. He did it with a Miiverse post for Wii U, and restated it at the Everybody is Here reveal.
