I mean. You'd be remarkably surprised how often these leaks have been true in the past 6 years at least -- even within this own franchise. Passing judgement on leaks is more credible now than it's ever been. Sokka losing his sexist edge (depriving him of learning to NOT be sexist like a functional human being) The entire plot of The Rise of Skywalker The entire plot of The Last of Us 2 The bulk of the plot of Cyberpunk 2077 The plot of Wish Blizzard's plans for Diablo 4's monetization, and the cutting of story mode from Overwatch 2 Sony's plans for Helldivers 2 Dragon Age: The Veilguard's sales figures These are *all* things that leaked, and they all share that they were entirely unchanged in the final product and/or they were entirely true. Likewise, we have Sonic the Hedgehog's design from the first sonic film which was ridiculed so unanimously and harshly that the studio changed the design. So, not only do we have multiple examples of leaks being totally right, but we also have a prolific example of how a public enough outcry can have an affect on a company's decision to move forward with certain aspects of a project. Like, I *get* the joke being made here? I even agree with it? But the fact remains leaks are more accurate than they ever have been, and generating enough outcry has had demonstrable effect on at least one major release.

Avatar series disabled characters; Toph (blind) Teo (in a wheelchair) Combustion man (no hands or feet) Zuko (limited sight eye and limited hearing) Ming Hua (no arms) Under their world view, these characters shouldn’t be in their show. I repeat *under their world view, characters like Tooh shouldn’t have left the drawing board because she was ‘DEI’*. Disabilities add interesting ways of telling creative stories and adding creative, new types of bending styles. It ADDS to the world and makes it interesting.
@espurrseyes425 күн бұрын
Toph: Blind girl that uses an ancient Earthbending technique to get around her impaired sight for the most part, still having things she can't do because of it, and all of this shaping her as a character and her relations with others. Also she's not so up her own ass that she can't make jokes about herself. She's designed in a way to be a cool, interesting character rather than some pandering slop. Teo: Wheelchair-bound kid who, despite not being an Air Nomad, still embodies the spirit of one. Enough to earn Aang's respect and eventually get him to open a sealed door in the temple. It's also a showing of the love between him and his dad as well as a showing of the dad's inventor skills, able to build a custom Air Glider on Teo's wheelchair so he can have some kind of greater mobility despite his impairment. They also had a great episode in general what with the whole Fire Nation plot point. Combustion Man: Cool design off the bat that becomes more interesting as you see him in action. Seeing his Combustion power, seeing how recklessly he uses it, seeing his weakness to even slight head injuries that when paired with his recklessness leads to him blowing himself up, and being able to piece together that he blew off his arm somehow with his own power, resulting in the cool metal prosthetic arm. Zuko: Not disabled as I don't recall him being shown to have impaired sight/hearing because of the scar. That's more so there as a mark of shame that defines his entire character, ultimately having to overcome that shame to become a better person. He's one of if not the best written characters in the series. Ming Hua: Similar boat to Combustion Man. Cool design off the bat that only becomes better when she's shown in action, waterbending of slight movements and using that to equip herself with water arms in place of her missing ones, which she can use to deadly effect. And like Toph, this gives her a weakness, this time to lightning since the electrocution hurts more since the water is connected to her internals. "Disabilities add interesting ways of telling creative stories and adding creative, new types of bending styles. It ADDS to the world and makes it interesting." That's exactly what all of these characters do, be it Toph and Ming Gua using bending to mostly overcome their disabilities, Teo using technology to do the same, or Combustion Man *becoming disabled* due to his destructive power and reckless use of it. And at the end of the day, the characters by themselves look cool. Now tell me: What about a little girl with a shotty looking prosthetic leg "adds interesting ways of telling creative stories" and "ADDS to the world and makes it interesting"? Or looks cool? And before you use the "we haven't seen anything about her yet", we live in an era where pandering is plentiful and easy to spot from a mile away, with snap judgements based on leaks and designs often being right more often than not. First impressions matter more than they ever have, and if you can't get across your intentions for a character of their design and story drafts, and in a way that isn't easy to misinterpret as "woke", you've failed as an artist.
@IsraelLlerena5 күн бұрын
@ so let me first explain my reasoning for saying Zuko is disabled. Maybe impaired would’ve been a better word. But during the show, you can see him sleeping on either his burned ear side or healthy ear side. He sleeps with his healthy ear facing up when he needs to listen out for any possible danger. He sleeps with his damaged ear facing up when he’s with iroh, when he doesn’t necessarily need to be aware of upcoming danger sneaking up on him. It’s subtle storytelling and admittedly not straight up said, but that’s why I say that. Because his damaged ear may have given him hearing issues and sleeping with his healthy ear up gives him more of a chance to hear better. Also, half Zukos eye is closing. Try to do something for me. Take your fingers and close one of your eyes halfways. This messes up your vision totally. I can see why they didn’t do this with the live action, because this messes up perception, and doing acrobatics with half an eye squinted is dangerous.
@rebeccadoyle6005 күн бұрын
@@espurrseyes42Jesus christ. Disabilities do not need to “add” to the world, characters can just… be disabled. Because that’s how real life works. There are plenty of fictional characters that are disabled and are still awesome and fell great stories about disability, even if their diability doesn’t add anything to the lore. You sound like an ableist version of Matpat.
@IsraelLlerena5 күн бұрын
@ to answer your question, I cannot yet tell you how it adds to the story because we don’t know how it happened yet. But it can be an incredibly interesting way to do bending and add to possibilities within the world, like the other ATLA characters have had. Just like Ming Hua, if the leg later turns to be Metal, there are a lot of possibilities with metal bending she can do. It’s possible she might fight like luffy who can extend his limbs, and she can extend her leg to do an extended kick idk. Or she could use her legs to reach herself high if she’s not on land. I’m not a creative writer for the show or anything. I’m just saying it adds possibilities. If they do nothing interesting with her leg that adds to the story or interesting bending. I’d be surprised because the series has 100% of the time done it with the intention that I’ve already said. I disagree with your last point. To me characters are way too complex to be judged from a few generic poses of characters that aren’t even meant to be seen by audiences. It’s not promotional images. If you saw a picture of a little blind girl in a generic pose with both her hands down, looking forward, and the leaked description was “this blind 12 year old girl beats up 7 guys at once easily without anyone ever touching her” context excluded, you’d be complaining. The series have used all these disabled characters to do incredible things and give stories. You’ve explained it thoroughly in your reply. For you to think they’d do NOTHING for the MAIN CHARACTER. An AVATAR-- that’s nonsense.
@espurrseyes425 күн бұрын
@@IsraelLlerena Yeah. It's so subtle that's it can easily be written off as him not actually being impaired/disabled by his injury that realistically should impair him. But the reason I don't know her name is probably because you can count the number of times we hear it spoken aloud on your hand. Maybe like... top 90%-95% Anyhow. I don't have anything against Teo. That's sort of the issue... Teo is hardly a 2-Dimensional character. He's just a friendly smiling face along for the ride. His father is a very interesting and fleshed out character and Teo's disability enhances his father's story and helps rationalize his decisions to us the viewer. But Teo himself... he's just sort of there? Honestly the only thing Pavi's skin colour inspires in me is curiosity. Assuming she's real, her darker skin tone compared to any of the nations or cultures shown in the original (with the water tribe being the only one that comes close, though their skin tone is much lighter in comparison) which given how Avatar treats ethnicity might mean this Avatar could be from a hitherto unknown culture for the series, possibly even an unknown nation at the most extreme). That or (given Korra is the start of a new cycle, it could also be possible that this avatar is being born into none of the existing nations) For other things (assuming this is real), there is of course the implied dynamic of a young adult minding a chosen one child. While I've not seen the show this sounds a bit like what I understand FLCL to be, which iirc was one of the biggest inspirations for Avatar. Fun to see them source new ideas out of it. The two also seem to have a bit of a dynamic playing out in their designs. with the guy being more serious while Pavi is more happy. There's also a seeming sci fi bend to it (seen mostly in the outfits and the name "seven heavens", to me the use of the word heaven may imply space travel being a thing but looking stuff up it might be a post apocalyptic setting, with the traditional structure of the avatar world being radically overhauled). Also looking for more, I found another alleged leak which involves a similar pair of characters (being a disabled girl earthbender and an older male airbender, which i think might have appeared in the video). The girl is older one in the main piece of concept concept art and lacks the artificial leg, and the guy is of darker skin (with a complexion closer to the earth kingdom), has his arrow tattoos, is happier looking, and sports a slightly modified version of the white lotus Armour, which suggests a few changes between these two designs. They also seem to have been drawn by separate people, which makes me feel a bit more confident that this isn't a bit, alongside Sci-fi Avatar not being a direction most people would choose to take the series (With other fan attempts at a third Avatar typically setting their stories in the equivalent of the 60s or 80s to match with Kora's 1920s aesthetic) All I can say is if this is the next Avatar I am going to be really interested in where they take this Avatar. I feel it could be really good
@Emery_Pallas8 күн бұрын
Also the obvious fact that Pavi is adorable. I love the character design decision of making the avatar so meek and unassuming, being this disabled child in rags. We think of the Earth Kingdom as "Avatar China", but trade and travel between China and India happened throughout antiquity. Her skin looks extremely similar to Guru Pathik, who lived in the Earth Kingdom (IIRC) during Aang's day. His clothing, philosophy, and vocab choices were designed to evoke Tibet/Nepal/India too. Toph has proved they have at least some ability to think through disability sensitively and follow through with their ideas in cool ways, and it would be nice to see if if they've maanaged to add to that in any meaningful way across the years. Really, I just wish media had more unambiguously disabled characters. Lord knows, we make up a large enough part of the population, and we come with inbuilt interesting narrative specificity (at least if Mitchell and Snyder are to be believed).

I hope this leak is actually true cause it would be so dope and fit in very nicely with the avatar series. I’m a huge fan of Korra so I could definitely see her taking a liking to this kid. I mean unfortunately Korra is the only past life she can connect to now, but maybe that can change and part of Pavi’s journey is bringing back the connection to the past lives. Also she’s an earth bender so like if she loses her prosthetic she can just bend herself a new one from earth and or metal. Wouldn’t that be cool!

I actually think its interesting how Pavi would have to learn to deal with the handicap of being an earth bender with a missing leg. Seismic sense is going to be a bit harder since she only has one foot to feel with, which will make learning and doing the same with the other leg (likey from the stump) an interesting notion. Even more interesting i think if her sister is the dark avatar and ends up the metal bender, while Ravi ends up the lava bender, because then she will be at a unique disadvantage against her should they have to fight.

If this is real, they have 2 options. They can do the same shit media has been doing for the past few years and make Pavi's story about some half-baked metaphor about empowerment and representation, and you have to like her cause brown! Or they can do the smart thing and hire actual good writers and make her a real, likable character with flaws who we want to see grow. Either way, I'm not a fan of the Voltron art style, and it should've been Avatar Genji.

Not surprised. People often dog on things for what they deem is "justified criticism", but really it's hatred for the disabled or minorities (etc, etc) in a trench coat. I love the avatar's design and I hope they make something decent with these new characters. I don't want the original. I don't want the opposite of Kora. I think they need something fresh that doesn't cling so hard to the past, while still feeling familiar. It's going to be tough for sure. Toph was my favorite in the original and an inspiration to many I think. I'm incredibly happy to see we're getting an earthbender avatar (If it ends up being a true leak)! One more and we'll have all four elements. To me that's really exciting to think about. I just hope they don't coddle this avatar too much, like a fragile piece of porcelain, because of their disability.

@jimothyworldbuilding36648 күн бұрын
Yeah I saw some of those tweets and thought they were way off. She looks South Asian, which fits lore, and her having a prosthetic leg is just good for an underdog story. They're dumb things to complain about and make it pretty clear you've been over-poisoned with hatred of anything "woke." Actual criticism: The leg looks the same as those athletes use, which on the one hand makes sense but on the other is a little bit boring (mfw when no bending-powered / bending-made super cool steampunk prosthetic). She's absolutely adorable. Pat on the head and give an apple material. I think they could lean into her vulnerability / underdogness by giving her bigger or messier clothes, as they'd make her seem smaller, but I get the feeling this would be her after she's started coming into her own just a little bit and is being taken care of by the big guy. The one actual complaint I have, since the other two points are just improvements on already good design, is that they're both dressed like Pokemon characters. Like if you told me they were from Pokemon I'd believe you. They should look like, y'know, Avatar characters, not Pokemon characters.

It's funny, A couple months ago I had this whole idea that the next Avatar should be an Earth Bender girl that loses a limb. It's super weird that ended up being the case. My idea was that she'd lose an arm in battle, like halfway through the series and would have to bend a prosthetic out of Earth or Metal and a big part of the series from then on would be her struggling with phantom limb while bending.

And for that matter, speaking of rumours, I wonder if Pavi is really official. If she is, I was wondering when in the timeline it would happen. I was thinking it could be further along, skipping some Avatars. And if I'm right, then a couple of the complainers' lore argument disappears.

And then you reminded me that a vocal minority of people on the internet have 0 media literacy. Like... Avatar got woke JUST NOW??? So you're just gonna ignore Teo, Toph, Combustion Man, the avatar who had no arms (who I don't think had a name but I could be wrong), and whoever else was disabled in the original series who didn't IMMEDIATELY come to mind? The answer is yes. They will ignore them. I feel like I'll need to see these two in animation before making a strong opinion and it remains to be seen if it'll actually be written well, but as of this moment, I see nothing to be upset about. They’re not even taking into account that this is gonna take place closer into modern times (in the avatar universe), this is not going to have an affect on the main story in that way, no lore is broken, no characters we loved were butchered, and this is a concept art, not even a finalized piece. Another thing to mention is that characters are their own characters, they’re not replacing any of the characters we love, the studio is doing their job and expanding on the world they created.

"no lore is broken" There was a massive jump in technology going from TLA to LoK, specifically the latter having whole ass giant mechas. Nevermind the refinement and widespreadness of Metalbending. So why the heck is what's supposed to be an even further modernized Avatar walking around with an old-fashioned prosthetic and not something both cooler and more reasonable for the setting like a bionic leg or something akin to Edward Elric's metal limbs? There's no reason that a post-Korra Avatar would be given subpar treatment like this, especially when White Lotus has been actively seeking out Avatars after Aang to train and protect them. This indirectly makes Pavi's era look somehow less advanced than Korra's, and makes the group designed to nurture future Avatars look incompetent.

I think this is my fear as well. Through out Korra the world since season one has felt like a fluid "eh what ever the writers need it to be is fine" but it just leaves season 2 and 3 feeling ungrounded in my opinion. It feels more like an non linear episodic adventure because new stuff is constantly getting brought up then promptly forgotten an episode or two later. Like what happened to Asami's company that literally MASS produced battle mechs that were making non benders capable of fighting trained benders? Season 2 and 3 have no clue what you are talking about mass produced mechs? No actually there are 0 repercussions of those being scattered into the world during a violent uprising. When the bad guys lose all the bad stuff just "goes away" and Atla wasnt that shallow, things had repercussions and a community in recovery wasnt convienently never shown again. With all the conflicting decisions Korra (the show)made for the world in season 1 and 2 the entire world should be a terrifying cross of spirited away and jurassic park had a baby by season 3 but once culty mc cult man shows up the world being in spiritual turmoil takes a gigantic step into the background. That really brings me to my other problem through out Korrah the Korrah rarley helps specific people of the world who arent family friends or friends of family. The world of Korrah feels like it has no strangers because anyone who isnt important is demoted to set dressing instead of supporting character. Korrah might do morally good things but almost none of them were her going out of her way to help individuals, I can easily count off atleast 3 or 4 unrelated people and 2 whole towns that the ATLA crew helped directly by going out of their way. I think it makes Korrah's journey feel hollow as a majority of the things she does are for personal reasons like a loved one or a loved one's loved one is in danger or "fight obvious bad guys for the greater good" with no really present victim other than nameless or barely named screaming people who you dont really get to learn about or revisit meaningfully ever keeping in mind that we see side locations and side characters in ATLA on average of twice if not more.
@Gatekid38 күн бұрын
my 2 thoughts on that are 1, the world kept advancing so if things got too futuristic things would be detached anyway 2 with the avatar cycle already hurt by korra there could be a focus on reconnecting to the previous world both spiritually (fixing the severed connection) or physically, though the people and spirits that remember. it's definitely a mixed bag, but i think both advancing and destroying the world risk taking away aspects of the world we love. I just hope

@@Gatekid3 personally I don’t want the connection to be fixed. I want them to lean 9n the idea that the new avatar cycle is kinda different now in some way. With Korra they already set up the first steps for that change.

I'm sorry but the next avatar looks less like an official protagonist and more like a high guardian spice oc. And that has nothing to do with the disability or skin tone, no. The art style is... off. It brings back... unpleasant memories... Edit: Ok i realize in the original text it might sound like I'm coming off in a different way than intended, so I feel like i should further clarify that I am neither mad nor crying "woke." I just.... something about the art style seems so off, like i can't be the only one seeing this! The prosthetic is neat, i think disability in protagonists makes for good potential conflict. The outfit is fine, post apocalypse is a cool concept. But... idk the art style just puts me off for some reason. Something about the proportions maybe? It reminds me too much of how HGS looks.
@WeRNotAlive4 күн бұрын
If it makes you feel better, you might be the only one who looks at these characters and sees the much behated HGS. Voltron and Pokemon comparisons have been made and those I think have more a lot more weight to them. For me, I’d rather have the designs lean Pokemon over Voltron if I had to choose. I understand why people might want the 2000s pseudo-anime aesthetic of the original, but Pokémon’s modern art style has generated one banger character design after the other and it also evolved from that franchise’s early days.

What's interesting to me is that the prosthetic and her friend's outfit look relatively modern, which to me makes the image of a little girl with a leg prosthetic really evoke images of modern civil wars in the Middle East. There's interesting potential there for a series with a more modern theming to have this kid be essentially an orphan from a war-torn corner of the Earth Kingdom, still unstable even a generation after the events of Legend of Korra, and that sounds like a potentially really interesting place for a new Avatar to come from. And Avatar who lost a leg to a goddamned land mine or something as a child is a dark but interesting angle, and watching the person she becomes to try and end these sorts of conflicts sounds like it has potential. Like, after Legend of Korra, my expectations are still that the interesting ideas will be largely squandered on a solidly mid series that doesn't have the depth or secret sauce of TLA, and the show will have to come out and be great to convince me otherwise, but good potential starting points are worth appreciating.

I think pavi, judging by her design ((as an artist myself)), will be a very caring avatar who is outgoing, energetic, caring, but skittish and afraid of change... I think she will have a backstory: shell have never traveled before and this is her first time, if shes skittish and afraid of change this may be the direction they take.... also because shes the earth avatar, and also to contrast aang and korra theyll make her more of a responisble person. also i think , cuz of prosthetic leg and general physique, theyve made her physically lacking and more intelligent as a character foil to korra. also her being an amputee and having a prosthetic leg is really interesting, if she trains to metal bend how will she be able to utilize it in combat??? and even if she doesnt, still interesting. also maybe shell be able to switch her legs from a walking prosthetic leg type to a running type, also maybe she can mimic the functionalities of a microprocessor leg??? ... Also since the design of the leg is more similar to a running/blade leg this may mean shes more outdoorsy ??? also excited cuz avatar has awlways handled writing disability really well :) also i think her guide animal will have a bigger role in the plot than any previous avatar... i think all this cuz shes earth avatar and also cuz her colourpallete is mostly green and pink which symbolizes nature, safety, and loving/kindness.... Her shape theory is square which symbolized stability, safety and trust... and her shillouette has alot of lines going outwards, which means its an more outgoing design compared to what would be if they were going inwards...

I could very well be wrong, but people have a right to compare the new show with how the show originate and speak their mind on what ATLA did right (Plot/Unique Characters) that people these days fail to pay attention to or invest in. Hopefully Pavi isn't defined by her disability and that she ends like Toph.

If that kid is really going to be the new Avatar. This might mean the side characters will probably have a lot of character development that the legend of Korra missed out on. Im thinking this because she looks younger than aang so she needs a lot of help and guidance.

If this is real I'm actually excited. I'm getting Dororo (2019) Dororo and Hyakkimaru vibes but with their roles reversed. Also excited for the metal bending to come :D

My theory is still that the Calamity was Vaatu regenerating and Korra died separating Raava and Vaatu and forcing them through the cycle of rebirth.
