Something I noticed. In the bottom left of Sarah's prom hallucination, you can see Julie in a wheel chair smiling and clapping for Sarah. You would think that, being Sarah's manic fantasy, that Julie's presence would be completely absent or at the very least sad/upset that she lost. This shows that Sarah's greatest desire was to be loved by everyone, including Julie.

I've heard that tragedy in literature is characterized by the conflict between two things that simply cannot both exist at the same time. I theorize the singing voices are kind of like narrating thoughts in Sara's Berry's head. Its obvious they're on her side, and they're painting it from Sara's perspective, as if she was the one in the right. A singer says "What a bitch" when Julie rightfully calls the cops, and the singers also sing "You taste the silver Sara, you taste the crown" encouraging her like "You can just taste it. You NEED it, you thirst for it." At times you can tell they're trying to be the narrators but are clearly biased.

There are two details I just adore every time I rewatch this. One is at 1:13 when Sara reaches for her necklace. It's almost like it's symbolizing a collar around her neck. The other is at 4:00. Okay so most people I’ve seen so far have been just chocking Sara off to being just insane which although is true I think there’s a bit more depth. Sara isn’t really just an insane girl to no reason. Her descent into insanity has many factors. The first factor is she’s used to being popular. She’s always been at the top of the social ladder, and now some amputee girl is getting more votes all because of pity while Sara has been putting triple the effort to guarantee her spot as queen. The next factor is she’s an impressionable teenager with a father that says that “Life is a prom,” so this means if she doesn’t become prom queen then she’s useless. If she’s useless then she’s a disappointment, and she very obviously doesn’t want to disappoint the only parental figure we see throughout the song. Her father appears to see that life is popularity contest, so she was raised to have the same view. She also has been popular her whole life, so she has always had people reaffirming self-worth. This contributes to the final factor of Sara pushing everyone away in her pursuit of that silver crown and sash. This mean that with no sense of personal self-worth, and a lack of friends to reaffirm people her self-with that she only has her father to please. So Sara did everything she could to avoid becoming a disappointment just to have a person to reaffirm her self-worth. This led to her murdering her competitors to win the crown. Anyway, take this with a grain of salt this is just my idea of Sara’s motive, and the push that shoved her over the edge.

I've seen some comments saying "why Sara didn't kill Julie first? That's a stupid move" Well, she felt betrayal from the 6 people who she thought was her friend. When you are taking "revenge", you take it from the traitor first before killing the one that made them betray you. It will be more satisfying that way. At first, I thought it was ironic that Julie survived. However, a review of this video has led to an alternate interpretation that I needed to get out there. Julie never really asked to be Prom Queen and, as far as we know, she had absolutely no part in her own campaign. While she was flattered and did not oppose the idea, she never actively sought the crown. If you pay attention to Sara’s hallucination at 4:00, Julie is right in front of the stage, cheering for her. From what little we know, this seems to be entirely in character for her. Despite not being “popular”, a majority of the student body went out of their way to do something nice for her, which wouldn’t have happened if she weren’t a generally nice and likable person. Is it possible that, even after Sara’s mind shattered to the point of committing mass murder, a part of her still recognized that none of the blame could truly be placed on Julie herself? In the end, she was just another bystander in over her head. She wasn’t actively running for Prom Queen, but instead was being pushed toward it. If other people hadn’t made the decision for her, it is entirely likely that Julie would have supported Sara instead. Perhaps THAT is why Julie Jenkins survived where none of the other candidates did.

What I find the most disturbing and sad about all of this is that people like Sara Berry actually exist in real life. Teenagers, just kids really, that got so much pressure on them to excel at everything. To always be the best and never lose in anything, not even something so trivial as a prom queen competition. Most kids in that situation also doesn’t have a great life at home, just like how it’s obvious in the song that Sara’s father never once tried to comfort Sara, never tried to get her professional help once she became depressed and (eventually) increasingly unhinged. In fact, he very clearly implied that if she *didn’t* become the prom queen she would forever be a failure in both his and her mothers eyes. Add the fact that they *never* again mention Sara’s mom outside of that line, which may imply that she’s dead or otherwise completely absent from her life, and it’s obvious that her Fathers opinion means a lot to her. Had her dad just been a better parent, had her friends just been there for her or had the teachers just steeped in when one of their students quite obviously wasn’t doing well then the tragic events that followed could’ve been avoided. So I guess what I’m going for with all this is that this song (brilliant as it is!) should be taken as a cautionary tale. There *are* a lot of Sara Berry’s out there and we should do our best to help them deal with their issues. If we don’t, well, then I fear that the song will ring all too true...

It's interesting at 2:33 when she spiraled into her hallucination it could've easily been Julie belittling her, the girl that the narration is describing to be the enemy/villain of the story. But instead the girl that comes out of the mirror who mocks Sara Berry, bullies her even, to the point of tears, is Sara Berry in a prom dress. A lot of the time it's more easier for us to see our flaws more than our strengths, but with the pressure from her father to be perfect those views of her flaws are amplified. In the final hallucination at 4:00 when the student body (including Julie), she bares a look of relief almost, it's like she has to be genuinely being praised by other, because it's the only thing that saves her from the negative words she hears at home, mentally and physically

As someone who is studying psychology, I think because of Saras mothers death is what drove her father to be so mentally strict with sara. Personal theory: the reason she didn't kill Julie outright was because of the "easy way out" she took. Meaning, Sara stuffed Julie into something Sara didn't expect Julie to come out alive, let alone have enough room to do something like calling the cops. Due to the "5 minute tops" line, you would think of somewhere where death would come rather quick. Sara was demented at that point, though. My guess would be somewhere Julie could have suffocated, just not as fast as Sara wanted to.

I've watched many reactions to this song, and was immensely disappointed by the sheer number of people who didn't get just how sad this song is. I was recommended this song for it being a nice inspiration for a horror story and this isn't a horror story. This is a tragedy. Poor Sara.

Yes it’s a tragedy. Especially nowadays where this happening for real is a serious possibility schools planners need to consider. But to be fair serial killer teenagers rampaging through a prom dance has been a popular horror trope in the US for 50+years.

That being when he calls Sarah’s name. Sarah why be so calm? There’s no future for a princess at prom. What if he was trying to say. “Sarah please let it all out. I feel like even if Sara *did* kill Julie first, they would've found out Sara did the killings either way. They probably would've been able to find out how by figuring out that the victims were related to her. Not to mention that nobody probably saw her during this time, and if anyone did, they would've seen her all bloody. So whether she killed Julie or not didn't matter, cause she would've *at least* been a suspect

This was Killer! I loved the original for how well it told it’s story, and you guys just amplified it. Anna did amazing as the lead (the whole thing was great, but I want to point out the choruses and the father lines, I loved those) and I loved Sedgeie, Snazz and Will as the background singers (they did the PROM QUEEN part amazingly). The instrumental was great to, really making that ending even more climactic. And Cami’s animation was incredible, every scene was really well made (they were well choreographed, (if that’s the right word)) and I loved the colors (or rather how Red was emphasized with the greyscale, especially at the end). It was all just so well made, it’s a really great project! You all deserve the silver (not the handcuffs... I was taking about the crown).

I love how Sarah's hand goes up to touch her necklace when her father says, "I know you won't disappoint me and mom." A lot of people have theorized that Luanne is Sarah's mother, but even if she wasn't, then in this animatic at least, SOMETHING happened to her mother. Most likely, she died. Maybe the necklace used to belong to her mother but she either gave it to Sarah or it got passed down to her when she died? Just thought that was a nice detail!

I like to think that she was told most her life that her mother was just as perfect as she aimed to be and the blood on the necklace is a subtle symbolism suggesting she's staining the memories of her mother from this act

I've watched this so many times. The vocals are great and each chorus feels more intense as the song goes on. My Theory: Her father wasn’t really antagonizing her, but because of all of the stress they put on her to be the best, she wanted to make them proud by being the Prom Queen so when we hear the father “talk” to Sara, it’s what she’s imagining in her head (hence why the voice never changes, and why we never get to see his face). Because of all of the stress she was put through, with her friends abandoning her and her boyfriend rejecting her the only thing she could think about was getting her father’s approval in fear of him disowning her. When she was planning her murders, the names that she wrote down were the names of the student council presidents (for voting Julie as Prom Queen) As for the people singing...family? We’ve already seen how..egotistical Sara is, and it doesn’t seem that her father is very soft either. It could be her family singing the song to her, believing what she did was for her honor-which it was, but not in the way that they think. This would also explain why the crown is in the shot, as they probably kept it after the dust settled. Sorry if this didn’t make sense, I’m kinda overdosed on coffee at the moment

Imo, I think the voices are somewhat like voices in her head as well as narrators. Or the voices as/acting as narrators too (or other way tound) which is why they're biased (eg. Saying "What a bitch" after Julie calls the police That's my take

I love how she didn't kill the only girl in her way. She pays attention to intricate details. If she had killed Julie first, and reported her as missing, prom would've been cancelled, causing her to automatically lose. She killed everyone who would've mourned Julie, making sure that they wouldn't be found. The only thing she should've done was take off her gloves and hide the weapons. *I'm not a murderer, I promise-*
