The hugee and dedicated fan base of Scandal is certainly well deserved! My first foray into J-Rock/Metal was Band-Maid and Babymetal - and the shock and awe effect of those bands on me somewhat eclipsed the awesomeness of other deserving bands for a time, but over the years I have grown to love and appreciate many other Japanese bands, like Scandal, who I also discovered were such worthy Japanese forerunners of these genres - and my life in music has been incredibly rewarding as a result. Verrry awesome and informative video!!👍

Saw them live several times, including at the annual female rockers' fest Naon no Yaon in 2008. Scandal have been more important or influential for their business model than for their music. They were everywhere in their heyday-tours including overseas, appearances at not only music fests but cultural fests and anime conventions, primetime tv and radio programs, tv commercials, anime and game tie-ins, product endorsements, etc.

I'm so glad to see this article. I have been a fan of SCANDAL for about 6 years now and discovered them about the same time I found Wagakki Band and Baby Metal. But they really struck a chord with because of their true rock style and sound, which has been missing from the US for a long time. They get short shrift both as a group and individually when it comes to the top lists people put together. As you said, Mami is an extremely integral part of the group and an excellent guitarist who can stand against anyone out there. Rina fits in that same category when it comes to drummers. Haruna is an excellent lead vocalist and great guitarist. And Tomomi merges great bass technique with her unique power squeak, lol, which really is a true counterpoint to Haruna's softer tones. What more can you ask of a successful group ? They are all superb musicians, they all sing with fantastic harmony and all work together on compositions to put out great product. Something you might find interesting is their interaction with the great Okinawan rock group Stereopony, as they were contemporaries until Stereopony broke up. There is a great video on YT of both groups on stage together at Girls Factory 11 under the title "Stereopony - hitohira no hanabira ft SCANDAL live". It's really fun to see Haruna, Tomomi, Mami, Rina, Aimi, Nahona and Shiho going wild on stage.

@venusgaijin I love Scandal, but they are NOT who you claim they are. There are MANY Japanese all female "trailblazer" bands that "paved the way" LONG before Scandal members learned to walk, let alone play music. Show-Ya from 1981 to 1998 were paving ways around the world for Japanese female bands. Shonen Knife (aka The Osaka Ramones) also formed in 1981 and have been trailblazing the world and continue to do so in the band's FOURTY-THIRD year of existence. Tsushimamire, formed in 1999, is currently conducting their 25th year anniversary world tour. And let us not forget Audry Kimura, producer and owner of Sister Records and Benten Records, who has toured Japanese all female bands all around the world for decades. And it is important to mention Pink Lady. An all female duo who, in 1979 was the FIRST Japanese female group to chart on the BILLBOARD Top 40 in the USA. That same year Pink Lady was the largest selling female act in the world. In my humble opinion, everyone I just mentioned in this comment paved the road for Scandal, not the other way around.
@ScyllaIo
@ScyllaIo Ай бұрын
@berryzmamire The way I see is that they are more globally known, their over seas tours show that with soldout venues. They actively encourage other girl groups to keep going and inspire new ones. The other groups you mentioned had started the road, but SCANDAL paved it.
@ardyzink7928
@ardyzink7928 Ай бұрын
I agree with the other comment here. While you may be correct with the core of your message, I would doubt that anyone here in the States would know or recognize any of the groups you mentioned. But, the chances of people knowing SCANDAL are much higher. Maybe his message of paving the way alludes to being brave enough to take Japanese rock music, especially girl bands outside of Japan and taking it to the world. I do think that SCANDAL had a big hand in that. Their pop-rock phase hit the States at exactly the right time. Now, you can see bands like BAND-MAID and NEMOPHILA growing into the world scene in much the same way as SCANDAL did years ago.
@berryzmamire
@berryzmamire Ай бұрын
@@ScyllaIo Thank you for your comment. However, reality plays an important role in the Japanese female music scene. As the American journalist Mark Twain once said, "Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please." Audrey Kimura, founder of Benten Records, who I mentioned in my first comment in this thread, is the paver of roads to the world for Japanese female bands. And the members of SCANDAL would be the first to agree with this fact. Since 1996 Audrey Kimura has been introducing female Japanese bands to the USA with Japan Nite at SXSW in Austin, TX. It was Audrey Kimura who brought SCANDAL outside of Japan for the first time, bringing them to SXSW in 2008 for Japan Nite. Audrey Kimura is a true trailblazer because Japan was not and is not interested in promoting female bands outside of Japan. Those bands that actually went overseas on their own paid a price because they received no support whatsoever from their record companies. And they often were penalized when returning to Japan. Audrey Kimura formed the first label which supported Japanese female groups overseas. SCANDAL wasn’t the only band in the 2008 Japan Nite line up. The show included Detroit7, Avengers in Sci-Fi, Ketchup Mania, Petty Booka, Quartz-head 02, Sodopp, and of course SCANDAL. Directly after SXSW Audrey Kimura took all seven groups to showcases in New York, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. And that is how SCANDAL was introduced to the outside world. SCANDAL might be an inspiration for aspiring female musicians in Japan, but I haven’t seen SCANDAL bring anyone with them on overseas tour. For the past 28 years it has been Audrey Kimura who has been doing the heavy lifting, “actively encouraging girl groups to keep going and inspiring new ones.” Audrey Kimura has been promoting, paying travel expenses, and setting up USA tours every year since 1996 for countless Japanese female bands. SCANDAL happened to have been one of them. And before SCANDAL and other bands benefited from Audrey Kimura’s loving care, other brave groups went out on their own and made a success in the USA and elsewhere. Pink Lady had a huge presence in the USA entertainment scene in the late 1970s, breaking through on the USA charts with their hit single, “Kiss in the Dark”. They were so popular that NBC Television engaged Sid and Marty Krofft, two of USA television’s most famous award winning production teams, to produce the weekly television series, The Pink Lady Show. Many of Hollywood’s biggest stars made guest appearances on The Pink Lady Show, including Jerry Lewis, Bert Parks, Blondie, Larry Hagman, Sid Caesar, Donny Osmond, Teddy Pendergrass, Hugh Hefner, Cheap Trick, Lorne Greene, Florence Henderson, Red Buttons, Alice Cooper, Roy Orbison, and Bobby Vinton, among others. Saturday Night Live even did a skit based on the NBC Pink Lady show featuring SNL legends Gilda Radner and Laraine Newman playing the singing duo (SNL S05 E18 May 10, 1980). When Pink Lady returned to Japan after their time in the USA, for a reward their record company and management company fired them, removed all of their records from stores, and condemned them to obscurity because no club would book them. Shonen Knife, which formed in 1981, is arguably the pre-Kimura trailblazers for independent Japanese female bands overseas. And yes, they also paved the trails they blazed and put up green lights for Japanese female bands of the future all along the way. After seeing Shonen Knife live in 1990, Kurt Cobain engaged Shonen Knife to open for his band Nirvana on their world tour in support of their breakout album “Nevermind”. Shonen Knife became so renowned in the USA that 23 (twenty-three!!) American rock bands produced a tribute album to honor Shonen knife in 1991 entitled, “Every Band Has a Shonen Knife Who Loves Them”. In 1993, during their USA tour to promote their album Rock Animals, Shonen Knife was the musical guest on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Here’s some video from the Late Night appearance from a Japanese documentary, please have a look kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnyaYWOCl7ylidk. To this day, Shonen Knife has a huge, loyal worldwide audience they’ve been performing for every year the past 43 years, almost all of which included a nationwide USA tour. These days many Japanese female bands have done well outside of Japan: Perfume, Oreskaband, Baby Metal, Otoboke Beaver, CHAI, among others. When it comes to who’s touring the most successfully right now, the ribbon goes to Baby Metal. SCANDAL is typically playing 500-1,000 seat venues outside of Japan while Baby Metal’s overseas venues are in the 2,000-3,500 range. I’m a big fan of SCANDAL too. I’ve been to several of their concerts. But they are not the first band to conquer the outside world. Nor are they Audrey Kimura who was singularly responsible for opening up the outside world for SCANDAL, as well as a plethora of other bands.

I don't think this video is correct. We're talking about vague cultural stuff so it might be, but I don't think it is. I mean obviously Scandal started out at a prodigious time and riding their good looks they got famous fast, but creatively it's just nonsense as there is nothing in their music that is actually new. The idea of women going for a different approach in terms of style and lyrics is also not really there as an argument when this same era had the likes of Bridear, Bis and Hitsuji starting out, so maybe you can argue putting Scandal up there as the spearhead, but I don't it's fair to attribute to them an influence that they probably did not have. They were simply one of many in a strange era. Strange but fantastic I should say, there is a reason I almost exclusively listen to Japanese music these days even though I don't speak a word of the language.

And those rock bands...Miss Ado do harder and heavier parts altought she sing pop then many of "female rockers". Bro, show us female japan version of Gutalax.
