From backstage Eric Clapton watched this song and called it the saddest moment in American music, and the high point of American music, all at once. I think Levon knew this was the last time he'd ever sing that song, and he went all-in. It never fails to move a listener to some authentic, sincere emotions. Bravo, boys. Thank you all. Thank you, Levon.
@shanephillips17304 жыл бұрын
i agree with Clapton. In this age we are in now I have so much emotion attached to this song. Levon is unearthly in his conveyance of Robbie's lyrics. Which were wrote with no first hand experience of the situation, only his reading of literature informed him. Robbie never been down south. How could he know? But the time has come. The war ended 155 years ago. As a multi generational Tennessean of Scotch-Irish descent , father, grandfather, volunteer coach, US Marine and taxpaying American. I do believe it is time for all men to be considered equal. It is past due time. I didn't mean to get off on a rant, but Cash would've known it was time. Past Due!
@wolfwilliams4 жыл бұрын
@@shanephillips1730 Fair enough, for the current listener, but in Nov. '76 Clapton had no idea the song would ever again have a contemporary social poignancy or relevance. Wasn't he referring to the way the boys absolutely knocked this performance out of the park? He knew The Band was done after this, and he knew there was no other American (Mostly Canadian, sure, but let's not split that hair here. The song is the thing, this song, not the group's political demographics.)... he knew no other American group was in play, or even on the horizon,that could do the kind of rock and roll The Band did. (And here we must acknowledge Clapton's fan bias. He has said many times that 'Music from Big Pink' was his favorite rock album, at least during that era, and that it changed the way he thought of making music, the potential to make seriously good and historically meaningful rock music.) That night, he seemed to know that this song was an apotheosis for The Band, and for the kind of music scene that was going to be diminished by their absence.
@sartainja4 жыл бұрын
Viva the memory and music of Levon, Rick, and Richard. Do I hear “Amen” gentlemen?

@@shanephillips1730 Past due for what? To permit the blood libel of southern soldiers? The statement that they were traitors,traitors when from the beginning it was understood that this republic was built on the sovereignty of the states and that their being in the union was not forced,but voluntary? No,it will never be time for that.No, to erase and disrespect our history in the name of so-called equality is too high a price to pay. Besides, the frankly communist mob that is demanding it will never be satiated, nor should they.Once you bend a knee to a mob you should do so with the understanding that you must spend the rest of your life there and probably your children's and your children's, children and so on.

Virgil Kane is the name And I served on the Danville train 'Till Stoneman's cavalry came And tore up the tracks again In the winter of '65 We were hungry, just barely alive By May the 10th, Richmond had fell It's a time I remember, oh so well The night they drove old Dixie down And the bells were ringing The night they drove old Dixie down And the people were singing They went, "Na, na, la, na, na, la" Back with my wife in Tennessee When one day she called to me "Virgil, quick, come see, There goes Robert E. Lee!" Now, I don't mind chopping wood And I don't care if the money's no good You take what you need And you leave the rest But they should never Have taken the very best The night they drove old Dixie down And the bells were ringing The night they drove old Dixie down And all the people were singing They went, "Na, na, la, na, na, la" Like my father before me I will work the land And like my brother above me Who took a rebel stand He was just 18, proud and brave But a Yankee laid him in his grave I swear by the mud below my feet You can't raise a Kane back up When he's in defeat The night they drove old Dixie down And the bells were ringing The night they drove old Dixie down And all the people were singing They went, "Na, na, la, na, na, la" The night they drove old Dixie down And all the bells were ringing The night they drove old Dixie down And the people were singing They went, "Na, na, la, na, na, la"

Levon and Hawkins were from Arkansas. So it kinda checks out.

The inspiration for all these musicians was from the American South, Gospel, the Blues, R & B, Country and Jazz all had Southern origins as ultimately did Rock n' Roll. Great art has always developed in fractious rather than anodyne environments. Robbie Robertson has written extensively about his Southern inspiration. The tortured history and poverty of the South and its mix of people and cultures is what gave us its music. The Band of course was made up musicians from a variety of places, but the soulful voice of the band, Levon Helm hailed from Turkey Scratch, Arkansas. There is another rock era epitaph for the Civil War written a little later, Neil Young's wonderful "Powderfinger" from 1979. Powderfinger was composed years before, sent to Lynyrd Skynyrd, who never recorded the song because of the fatal plane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines. Like this song, Powderfinger has been covered many times, notably by the Cowboy Junkies and the Beat Farmers.

@@tomeskew6080 yeah but ronnie Hawkins was not in the band,yes I know they were his backing band when they started out but he wasn't a member of the band and had nothing to do with this song, so its 4 Canadian's and one southern boy performing this song written by a Canadian

@@michaelstansby1770 erm ok,not quite sure why are are telling me this ? Someone made a comment about it being 4 Canadian's and 1 southern boy,then someone else said there was 2 American and 4 Canadian as ronnie Hawkins was American. I just said that Ronnie Hawkins wasn't in the band so it was 4 Canadian's and 1 American. I said that I knew they were Ronnie's backing band but he was never actually a member of the band. It's all good though, it doesn't matter but I think you may have replied to the wrong person as your comments don't really have anything to do with mine ,no dramas bud

And again I see these dividing comments in here . People have gotten too far off the path and too far away from what brought us here . I have not so distant relatives in the ground on both sides of that War. I have their guns in the closet and its a funny thing . They both have sat silent for many many years side by side and just like most of the people that fought and died in that war they did nothing to cause it. They were just used to carry out very ugly work just like so many Americans cut down in their youth . Just children fighting for whatever the rich told them was something to fight for. That war was a tragedy for everyone involved and its scars are still worn today by many . I think people forget that.. Many Fathers and sons never came back home. Many blood lines ended . You notice I am not indicating one "Side" or the other . Why ? Because it was all American lives .....Our population would do well to keep that war and its lessons fresh in their minds. This song is the perspective of a person that was on one "Side" and its sad . Levon gets that point acrost masterfully . This in no way takes away from the families in the north that had their sons and fathers never come home . Roughly 640 thousand Americans died and are gone and in the ground . Some were lost and the families have no idea where they are buried . Anyone that tries to turn this song into some political bullshit is just a moronic asshole... Period...Its one mans view of the aftermath . We are all Americans and all allowed to have a view...

I love this performance and love The Band, but I am saddened to watch this and realize that at this point in time, July 2021, that all the good ones are gone and only the douche survives. It must be the infusion of native blood. I really don't have any answers for that. Rick was a sweet, kind, thoughtful soul. Levon was his own force of nature. Rick laid it down in his own way, and God bless him. It breaks m heart that they are gone and that there remains so much animosity, but.... there is still the music and in that there is glory and redemption.
