This story couldn't have taken place in another time, because 1923 Ireland is absolutely a necessary context. The Irish Civil War was really frustrating. People who'd fought together to win Ireland's freedom were suddenly at war. The actual reasons had to do with who accepted the treaty that made Northern Ireland part of England and who rejected it. No one really won, though the stalemate resulted in the treaty being accepted after all. It was absolutely needless violence where best friends turned on each other overnight. So, yeah. The vistas and technology aren't really the reason to pick 1923.

On the same day I watched this film, my boyfriend said he didn't love me anymore. He continued being happy, but I just wasn't part of his happiness anymore. "But you liked me yesterday ?" The incomprehension, denial, distress, anger, despair, resignation. You start questioning who you are. All the emotions I went through were so beautifully depicted in the film, with great accuracy. It truly blew me away.

As an Irish person, I can tell you that the movie is filmed on the most beautiful place in Ireland. Achill Ireland, Co Mayo. My favourite place in the world. You can drive onto it from the mainland. There are also shots from Inishmore, one of the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway.

I was definitely one of those “this film is not for everyone” types. I found it depressing, and did not like it for my own personal entertainment; but can also appreciate it as a wonderful and artistically attractive film. That’s entirely possible. I didn’t like many great films the first time I watched them; but it also might just be that I wanted something more cheerful considering what I’ve gone through as of lately.

We aren't always in the right place for a film and thats ok. We must also remember that not all films are meant to be "enjoyable". Sometimes great films can be uncomfortable and that can make it feel tedious to some. I think films are the perfect place to explore the dark, depressing, and tedious aspects of life. As we get to see beyond our own experiences and hopefully make us more well rounded and empathetic people.

I felt blindsided and betrayed by this movie. I found the beginning to be great, the scenery so beautiful, the characters charming, the comedy laugh out loud funny, and then it gets SO dark and actually silly (chop off 5 fingers and just go out to the pub??). And then the little beloved donkey chokes to death on top of it all! It was hurtful, gut-punching, harsh, devastating, too much, after such a fun beginning. Ugh. I was angry and upset.

I think what makes this film so moving is that the story is a microcosmic mirror to the Irish Civil War that is raging right across the bay from them, where fellow Irishmen go from kin to enemies overnight, who are harming themselves (like cutting their fingers off) in their fight to banish each other. So many layers of meaning in this movie come from the references to the war. That's why we end with the two man standing on the beach talking about the war, and about how there are wounds you can't come back from, which is so deeply sad. I just saw it and can't stop thinking about it, even getting teary eyed. Colin Farrell deserves an Oscar for his performance. That first scene where he gets rejected, the look of bewildered hurt in his face was heart-wrenching.

Saw this at TIFF and absolutely loved it! I'm not ready to call it McDonagh's best film, as In Bruges exists, but it's very close, and I'm really hoping Colin Farrel's Best Actor win at the Venice Film Festival translates to an Oscar nomination (a win may be tricky with Brendan Fraser and Austin Butler in the mix, but it's not impossible). As much as I love In Bruges, I would say pretty quickly that this is my new favourite. It hews a lot closer to the slightly lower stakes of McDonagh's theatre work, there's less of a reliance on the shock value of Ray's crudeness, as he's a prick to everyone around him, and I'd argue that the editing and mise-en-scene is even more well crafted in Banshees (even though In Bruges is unquestionably gorgeous). Both are brilliant, but I know which one I'm going to be recommending to friends first

I thought they were going to reveal that Colin's character was a ghost. A ghost that was wandering around the town and the townspeople didn't mind having around since he just died. At one point, Brendan's character said he was going to play a certain song at his funeral. For certain reasons, he would no longer be able to do that. Brendan's character didn't want to be his friend anymore because he was dead. He didn't want to be tortured by his presence. That is why he was willing to go to such extremes. It is a fantastical story, so I felt like this could've been a possibility. I'm sure I'm just crazy, since I haven't found a single person who has mentioned this.

Any art medium should stimulate your thought processes; should make you exercise those brain cells that contribute to growth. Sure, action films are fun, but when a cinematic experience like The Banshees of Inisherin comes into existence and gives you a chance to wrap your mind around complex truths like how intransigence, pain and rejection can lead to war with all of its collateral damage, it should be understood as great art.

Not a huuge fan of this guy. I loved In Bruges, Seven Psycopaths felt like a Tarantino wannabe film and Three Billboards felt like a Coen Bros wannabe film. This however I'm super excited to see. Farrell and Gleeson have a ridiculously good chemistry. So in for this one!

I think he was making fun of Tarantino type movies with "Seven Psychopaths". That's how I took it, at least.

I may stand alone, but I hated it. I didn't laugh, I was confused more than anything, Gleeson's self-punishments were confusingly dumb, the whining was irritating, and the only roles I thought stood out as remotely good were Barry Koeghan and Kerry Condon. With that being said, it didn't save the film. "Not for everyone" is true. And no, I am not a Marvel movie fan. I can appreciate a good story. This one was too unbelievable. Take out the self-punishments with a little more inventive back and forth (not waiting til the end), even still ending the way it did, and it would have been better.

I'm with you. I did not like this movie at all. Had some good acting and good shots. For some reason writers nowadays do not know how to end a movie unless they are remaking something that's already been made a ten times over.

I really hope the success of this movie finally convinces Netflix to put up a better quality version of In Bruges. The current one (at least where I live in Switzerland) is like 720p and has terribly low volume with no subtitles so it's so hard to understand anything that's going on, and it's such a shame cuz it's such a great movie.

In the Mel Brooks movie, "The Producers", the 2 main characters are looking for a play that will guarantee to bomb on the opening night. If they were making The Producers now, they wouldn't choose "Springtime for Hitler", they would use Banshees.

In Bruges became one of my favorite movies ever the first time I saw it, still haven't seen anything that takes its place, but also the combination of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson is one of the best team ups of 2 actors I've ever seen. Chemistry, comedy timing, everything is perfect when they're in a scene together.

I found it okay. Some parts were funny. But i dont really care for period pieces usually. This was no exception. They are all very bleak, dull, and make me happy i dont live in that time. For a movie being about two nobodys not being friends anymore on some island off of ireland it did okay. But to me wasnt very interesting. Barry keoghan was one of the only interesting characters if you ask me.

My home area in Ireland looks a LOT like this film. Very very pretty and calm in Summer; very very bleak and pitiless in Winter.

Thank you for your review of the movie. It sounds like it is worth watching. I really wanted to like The Rings of Power but after all is said and done, I only like Arondir, Bronwyn, Elrond, even though he is in no way my beloved Elrond, and the Balrog. Well, they only showed one Balrog if I'm remembering correctly. If the showrunners want a positive review from you because they're sponsoring you, I would mention the scenery and the depiction of Men in the South, and any favorite characters that you may have. I love Felicia Day, but I just can't. I still will watch the next season, but really, I'd love it if the Balrog would just burn the whole thing into the ground.

I didn't think Brendan Gleeson could he out-acted in a movie until Farrell did it in In Bruges. He then proceeded to do it again here. Imagine my shock when Barry Keoghan outdid both of them. It's a crime that Keoghan didn't get an Oscar.

I mainly agree, but there was a lot of clumsiness in the second half. MM can really write lines, and the whole cast can really deliver them. The animals are great. See this play, but be prepared to be disappointed after the interval, then reflect that it's great in so many ways.

4/10 very disappointed by this super depressing simple allegorical story about someone who decides to shun their friend, but then harms himself to make a point... and I guess the point the movie makes is that our resentments or self righteousness really end up hurting ourselves as well others. But why does SUCH A NEGATIVE movie need to be made to make such a basic point. The acting was great, but sheesh, I did not enjoy that AT ALL.
