The Barras is a major street and indoor weekend market in the East End of Glasgow, Scotland. The term "barra" is Glaswegian dialect for "barrow", relating to the market's early years, where traders sold their wares from handcarts. Barrowland is sometimes used to describe the district itself where the market is located, which is actually officially known as Calton.

It’s kinda changed in last 2 years was up there week ago , still a place of my childhood and right up up till now great place for a bargin and a banter. Here’s to many years of the Barras.

I used to visit the Barras market every weekend between 1987 and 2001. Back then it was so mobbed it would take you half an hour to walk its length. Lots of noise from stall holders calling out their wares. Its all died a death now. Every weekend I still get sentimental for the old Barras.

The Barras were where you went to pick up a bargain, towels, curtains, crockery, the stall holders in the street used to have cracking patter and throw towels and stuff to punters, which I imagine were part of their families to make it look as if they were giving out good discounts…. It used to be mobbed on Sundays before the normal shops were able to open on a Sunday.

sad to see it like this. I had to pay £5,000 for my pitch in the Barras 20 years ago and it was going downhill back then. Not many familiar faces left.

The barras suffered hugely from internet shopping and poundstores but also a radical change in culture which has left working class institutions like greyhound racing (now vanished from glasgow) and betting shops as relics of history. Sic transit gloria mundi.

Last time i was up the barras(1989) i bought a very nice russian automatic watch from a chap who had an interesting stall.. Now with the interweb i can get see whats on the market world wide from the organ grinder 🙉🙊🙈
