I’ve been working on establishing silvopasture a few miles down the road from you. A few things that might help: Use the cut material to form on contour brush piles. A foot tall and 2-3 ft wide works well. This will provide good habitat for wildlife and reduces erosion. Set your pile spacing to maintain good access. If you still have excess material, use the “conservation burn” method to make biochar. Cut defective tulip poplars and maples in the spring after they leaf out, sheep and cattle love the leaves. Fence your silvopasture separately from the open pasture. The grass grows slower at times and must be managed with different grazing intervals. After a while, you’ll have a park like pasture, beautiful and productive!

I've got a hillside that looks a lot like Billy's. I"ve been thinking about using some of my thinned trees, mostly standing deads, to make on contour brush piles, just like you're talking about. I'm glad you posted this reply, since it confirms my thoughts. Thanks!

It's beautiful that you are showing that the mis-managed and horribly neglected land can be rehabilitated into becoming healthy again. So many people I know envision homesteading as starting with a pristine piece of property and building their life on it, but honestly that doesn't fit every homesteader's journey. Wherever possible, having the help of livestock that are free to act like themselves and following up with a rotational method to rejuvinate these lands is remarkable, ancient, and wonderous all at the same time. I agree cover cropping before too many invasive thngs can get established is preferrable... Here in Georgia, we have Chinese Privet that have become terribly invasive. The problem is they' were planted as ornamental hedges in neighborhoods, are hard to kill (so they're "low maintenance"), bloom fragrant and copius tiny flowers that produce lots of shiny black berries the birds love, and if you cut them down, a dozen more sprout from the roots. So I feel your aprehension and dread when it comes to the silvergrass!

Good news, the 30+ acres adjoining my little farm is owned by my landlord. He gave me permission to run pigs through the woods, which look just like the before pictures you’re showing, maybe worse. I’m praying for Duroc and Chester White pigs in spring. Selling off the AGH/KuneKune mix sows and piglets. I’m planning on taking the winter months to make a plan, put in minor infrastructure and then rockin’ some pigs to change the landscape into a decent pasture/silvopasture. Meanwhile, I won’t have the pigs to worry about all winter, so I’ll have more time. May also sell or give away the birds too. If I do raise birds again, they’ll be Bielefelders. First I need to finish my house, then the perimeter fence, then pig shelters and water access. Sure wish I had a tractor. That would save me a couple months and solve some water access issues, with swales and a pond or two.

Make sure you have a backup to really corral the pigs in/pasture or way to feed them, as sometimes neighbors rescind their agreements and become quite aggressive about it. Speaking from experience with my goats…. So protect yourself/make it a formal agreement, or at the least have an immediate backup that you trust to take care of the pigs available. My neighbor’s dog bit my husband and from that day onwards they have been incredibly prickly with us over any perceived slights. And that’s with no damage to their health/safety. They act like our livestock guardian was a monster for biting their dog once to get it to stop mauling my husband…. Just always be careful with non-written agreements. Good luck on your project piggies!

Either I go look up silvopasture to figure exactly what it is that way these next few videos that you guys do on it I'll know what you're talking about or I'll just keep watching y'all's videos and figure it out that way 🤷‍♂️ hahaha thanks y'all for sharing this video with us. Sheep do good in this kinda environment also. But they tend to respect fences better. Big thing is getting the pigs through at least one season so you can actually work. After that I'd go with stuff that puts down allot of roots either deep tap roots like sunflowers or dikon, or just a big mat of surface stuff like winter rye or crimson clover. Once that soil is loosened back up either by pigs or cover crops. I'd go and get some orchard grass or whatever will do well in your area back in.

Forgive me if I’ve missed this in another video, did you select your property rather specifically- like your rolling hills facing a specific direction, etc before purchasing? It seems your approach would work no matter what kind of property. As land continues to increase in price, do you recommend specific site types? South or East facing hills, etc?

@@TrickleCreekFarmIf you can have it both ways that’s best. I always told my husband it would be nice to have a “summer” and “winter” cabin to switch between on the property, to best make use of the sun. Whatever you go with, know that clearing land takes time no matter the method, if you don’t intend to use herbicides or a brush hog…. Speaking from experience, having had goats for a few years now on a parcel that was clear cut and left to lie open afterwards… It doesn’t happen overnight for sure😅

We’ve since gotten our property and have more sun than we’ve ever experienced! We’ve been working diligently since mid February and have much accomplished and much more to do. Spent over 15 years on our last homestead and when we left our gardens, orchards and landscaping were incredible - all those years building soils with naturally raised animals and lots of manual labor. So it begins again with a steep learning curve, but loving every minute of it!

That's a good thing most times when you're using them. Only two things can stop Bermuda grass frost and pigs. Granted he didn't have to worry about Bermuda grass up in the hills but there's plenty other weeds. They'll also loosen it all up so reseeding behind them is easier. Little weeds to complete with seeing they'd rather dig out all the roots than walk to greener pasture

Just found your channel. What lovely piggies! I have a herd of goats, and was considering MaYBE 2 pigs to help clear our land. We have a huge pasture overrun with blackberries, and further up we have mismanaged/unmanaged woodlands allowed to grow wild. Clear cut then abandoned, more than a few times… 😅 Beautiful, and great habitat for wildlife, but not productive. I am sure silvopasture would be a great thing to have up there, or implemented in some way… I know the herd stocking rate recommended is 1-2 goats per acre for woodland, compared to 7-10 goats on pasture. I wonder if silvopasture is somewhere in between, or right up there with 7-10? I’ll have to experiment with it and see what happens, if I can manage to get a patch to grow grass. Right now the areas in the main pasture that have trees become a dry lot/rocky since the goats love the shade so much and bed down there. At least it’s better than just having thickets upon thickets in there. Controlled burn really cleaned out a lot of things and helped the understory return, hopefully in time/with additional fences to rotate things more I can make the grass grow. 🪄
