The owner of vermont compost puoneered this system, and does it at scale, he turns his piles with a front end loader. Now. Edible acres youtube also has a nice three bin system that he seeds with grain as he buils the pile, after it has done the high heat portion. The grains ferment or sprout, and the chickens turn the pile for him, looking for the treats, he has to restack it, and he turns it as he switches from bin to bin,

People talk about being sustainable but if your sucking off the teat of the feed store that isn't really sustainable. What if you job ended or there was no power/gas? My chickens have been stationary since about November. Our ground is frozen, which means there's no way I can move the fence. I have had to modify how I do the composting because I can't use a hose with the cold, and the compost piles end up freezing as well. I'm essentially moving the area they eat from around within their fence, and letting the compost build up a few inches within the whole area of their fence. As things start to thaw out I'll gather it into more compact piles, add more water, and let the chickens finish it off. I do have to feed more, but still not nearly as much as I'd have to without the compost.

I'm in rural North Central Nebraska. We've had bizarre weather this winter vacillating between 40s to 50s and single digits. We have frost-free hydrants, but haven't really had enough days of above freezing weather to make wetting the piles effective rather than just freezing solid.

Flipping the pile in cold weather gives me great satisfaction when I see the warm moisture vapors rolling the freshly turned pile. I don’t have a channel, (no wifi), but I’ve been doing the CToS since last summer when I made one from pallets and scraps. I switched to a 2 week cycle right after you mentioned it. Though I still need to clean the CToS every week because I can’t lift out the tarp full of bedding after two weeks. I had to pitchfork out two wheelbarrow loads before I could lift it out. The deep bedding also helped the chickens stay warm at night. I removed the laying boxes too. They lay them in a nest or two that the hens make. Yesterday they broke their old egg per day record of 24 and laid 27 which is the total number of hens in the CToS. I had so many eggs that I fed about 10 dozen to the pigs, dogs and myself. I’ll set up an honor egg stand when it’s warmer.

I've been planning this all Winter and I got started with it today. I have a huge 4 year old compost pile and 4 separate pens so I'm dividing up the compost into 5 sections today & the plan is to free range one pen and rotate the other 4. I'm a Winter feeder and I currently have about 100 Chickens and incubating as many eggs as I can with 5 incubators up through Fall and some will be sold at the end of the season but I'll be keeping most of them and feed was a literal arm & leg this past Winter... at one point we ate soup for a week so the chickens could eat 😂😂. I'm dumping my entire mealworm farm & my redworm farm into the compost and giving them a few weeks to start reproducing before I release the chickens and I sure hope this does the trick to cut back costs.. I'm just worried about attracting Predators with the compost but hopefully my live traps do the trick.

Sounds like a sensible plan. Best of luck!
