Rommel was really defeated in North Africa by Stalin, the British Enigma codebreakers of Bletchley Park and by the British Royal Navy. Basically, he lost because he had no supplies support. Most of the fuel, ammunition, fresh artillery, tanks and men, food and spare parts that he desperately needed were diverted to German armies on the Russian front. What little that was directed to him was delivered by the Italian Navy - which was easily intercepted by the, by then, vastly superior Royal Navy...who from Bletchley decrypts, knew exactly where the supply convoy ships would be. Rommel got dealt a bad hand in North Africa. Had he got better breaks, the outcome of el-Alamein - and hence, probably the whole war - might have been different.

My grandfather was there he as died know ,he told me if the British government had not kept striping the army in the desert they would have beaten Rommel years before and a lot of soldiers would have been saved .he also said that the Germans were getting information from an American about the British army ?.
@247micko4 жыл бұрын
That is correct. The American Attaché was sending reports to the USA, highly detailed about British strengths & plans etc & the Germans were breaking his code. Also the British could have driven the ltalians right out of Libya in 1940-41, but our best formations were sent to help the Greeks. And they were overwhelmed in Greece. So it was all for nothing.

One wonders why British air power was not used to knock out the 88 mm anti tank guns. These were knocking out huge numbers of British tanks. The original M4 was a close match to the Panzer 3 & 4.

Sad to say that most of the veterans interviewed, both sides, seem to be suffering to some degree Survivors Guilt. Hearing their stories I can understand why

17:00 Like the way they show a Panzer 3 'blueprint' when talking about the P4 F2. They even transition between the 2 models, highlighting the error. They could have got away with it but didn't give a fuck, clearly.

The gun was not great, but was good enough to knock out a Tiger 1 from the front at medium-ish to close range. When you account for the angle of sloping, the front armour of a Sherman comes out to about the same as the Panzer IV. The Sherman was one of the easiest tanks to repair in the field and it was just as easy to produce in the factories. And the later models had some of the lowest deaths-per-knocked-out-tank rates of any army of the war. Shows like this, while entertaining, really give the M4 an unfair image.

Umm. Another of these subtly revisionist 'America won the war' offerings from er, America. El-Alamein was a proper infantry, air superiority and artillery engagement not just a tank battle. A huge conflict of leadership skills between two very able generals out of which a British (Montgomery) victory emerged. Yes, the M3 Grant was an 'ok' tank. The British Valentine was a superb 'infantry' tank but not suited to battle with other armour. The M4 Sherman, a joint British-American design, specified, originally to replace all the British armour lost at Dunkirk, arrived just in time and was much better than both the Grant and the Valentine. America's brilliance here was her industrial base - Sherman tanks and their super-reliable gasoline engines were turned out, cheaply, to tight spec. and in large numbers. The M4 was, in 1942, a 'good' tank although let down (contrary to what the film claims) by its relatively puny 75mm gun. The US 76mm replacement was better - and the British QF 17 pounder was still better, as good as the German 8.8cm. Undoubtedly, the Russian T-34 was the Allies' best, most important tank but the M4 Sherman must be close second. The only Allied tank powerful enough to go full had to head with the German Tiger IV was the British Comet (an evolution of the Cromwell) and that didn't arrive until December 1944, too late to make much difference.

Alasair Barkley Montgomery the glory seeking hound could have been replaced by a private. He had enormous military men and equipment and there is no question who would win the battle. Montgomery's plan of Market Garden in Holland was a disaster and yet he claimed it it was a victory. Bullshit again from the glory seeking hound!

@dogbadger4 жыл бұрын
I think that's neither entirely accurate nor fair - Monty had many faults but I don't think a disregard for the lives of his men was one of them. He's delay in taking Caen - a huge point of criticism by his many American distractors - was due in part to genuine concerns for his men's welfare, which is a reason he was respected and even beloved by them. Now, if you're looking for a general who didn't give a flying fuck about the lives of his men in the pursuit of glory, I recon Patton's the one you're after.
