Yeah, no Athenian cavalry, but although the Persians brought them they struggled to find room to unload, a fun fact is that Persian Alfalfa grass now grows on the plain at Marathon in modern day as a result of the Persians bringing it with them to feed their horses prior to Marathon.
@Mercvrio53695 жыл бұрын
Athenians and Plateans had no cavalry and the Persians had no room to unload theirs, so they've had a small number of horsemen - not their usual numbers.

@@helios4753 not really in this era, it was the first time the Greeks fielded a navy of this size, what they did show in the movie would have been too advanced for the day. Th Persians had experience with fielding such a large navy, but they had nearly no competitors, and the sources don´t tell us of any particular formations aside from the general strategies both sides employed. Yes, there existed tactics during this time, but not on the enormous (for the day) scale these navies clashed.
@helios47535 жыл бұрын
@@NotDumbassable Wait I thought the comment was saying the movie showed no tactics? I was saying there were tactics. Now they're too advanced? Anyway I don't remember the movie. It was pretty average. Weren't the historic tactics fairly simple and incorporating the islands as a defence of the fleet?

One of the main sources sais that the Persians actually were retreating to the ships since the promised support from local Greeks did not happen and the Athenians did not show any moves for days. So they already loaded their horses to the ships. The Athenians used then this situation to their advantages and caught the Persians by surprise only fighting light armored infantry and archers.

Hello everyone, I was part of this battle I was one of the Persian army’s. My gamertag is iboots just as proof search me on steam. I have been looking at the comments and just wanted to clear some things up. One of the comments I saw were “why did we have troops starting on the beaches? “ this was because we could not put immortals or other armored troops on the boats so we were forced to put them on the beach. Another comment was people mainly saying there was no Cav in this battle HISTORICALLY in which you guys are right. But, we were simply trying to keep the battle fair for the Athens as it was a 2v1 battle. We weren’t trying to for a cinematic battle. I am fine with criticism just wanted to clear some problems that we had with the battle. Also, I don’t know why I comment this a year later but I just thought of it.

Im a greek and i have to say that this was a very nice battle and very close to the real battle . But Athenians had almost no archers and no cav and i think it would be better to start the ambush earlier when the persians were unloading troops. But nice vid !
@Labis-uk9ne5 жыл бұрын
Marathon is actually a cliff, cavalry would have been completelly useless so the persians didn't even bother landing it. It was a pretty smart terrain choice by the athenians. Fun fact : The spartans did arrive at the battlefield but the battle was allready over. So after they saw the destruction the athenians had caused, they actually congratulated the athenians and said that they wished they had arrived sooner to get in some action!!!

The greeks had no cavalry at Marathon and they feared the persian cavalry to the point of building barricades in they're flanks to stop the persian cavalry from attaking them an also the greeks didn't just arrive at Marathon saw the persian disenbarking and attacked the persians where alredy disenbarked when they arrived they even had a standoff while the persian general was thinking between attaking the greeks on the hill in their defensive position and marching along the coast to reach Athens before the greeks got there there was a initial battle when the persians attacked the hill and the greeks won but the the next day the greeks attacked the persians leaving their defensive position to protect themselves from flanking from the numericaly superior persian forcé they changed formation they moved more men in the flanks to protect for flanking and left the center thinier knowing thanks from one of their generals having fighted the persians or with the persians years ago I can't remember right now that do to the persians always having cavalry on the flanks their infantry there was much weaker than in the center so when the lines clashed and the persians start winning in the center and more troops move in from the flanks to breakthrou the strong Athenian flanks that hadent move even a little from the original clash from the lines closed in from the flanks forcing the persians to retreat to the boats where they left in the direction of Athens intent in attaking the defensless city the Athinieans then pulled a forcemarch exausted after the battle that when the persians arrived at Athens they saw the entire army manning the walls and the persians then left back to persia Sorry for bad grammar I am writing from a celephone and English is not my first lenguage so sorry for the errors both mine and from the autocorrector
