This action during the Battle of the Coral Sea is all too often glazed over with relatively little attention to the details, so I do appreciate the more in-depth review of the initially unintentional attack on the oiler and her escort. In fact, it is rarely even noted that the oiler was all but empty of fuel; an aspect I had not known of before. Thank you, "House of History" for this detailed laden video.

I knew a petty officer who was at Coral Sea. According to him, the destroyer with the most mechanical problems, in this case the Sims, was detached from the fleet to cover the Neosho and the thought was they would be safer separated from the main battle group. He was on one of the other destroyers with the main fleet and he said they listened on the radio as the Sims was attacked and overwhelmed.

One of the retreating American destroyers, Alden, had Ernest Evans on board. He felt ashamed about the retreat, and said that if he even commanded his own destroyer he would go into harm's way no matter what. Well, he did, as captain of the USS Johnston during the action off Samar, Battle of Leyte Gulf.

Between the battle and operational losses from this attack and other operational losses from searched, by the time Shokaku and Zuikaku engaged Lexington and Yorktown, their air groups had already lost a good number of aircraft and aircrew. This plus the losses from the "main" battle meant that Sho's and Zui's air groups headed for home significantly depleted. Besides turning aside the assault on Port Moresby, the Battle of the Coral Sea also reduced Kido Butai's carrier complement at Midway.

One unintended consequence of detaching Admiral Crace's Task Force to block the Jomard Passage was that it attracted several land-based air strikes (including one by friendly B-17s), that would have been otherwise directed against Fletcher's carriers. On the other hand, the mistakes of the IJN on May 7 were borderline incompetence. Especially both Shokaku scout pilots mistaking the Neosho and Sims as "a carrier and a cruiser".
@legoeasycompany2 ай бұрын
Scale is hard to judge from altitude so mistaking Sims with a cruiser is a forgivable mistake, mistaking Neosho for a carrier is the biggest slip up. Also it's really weird they'd assume a carrier and cruiser would off sailing on their own which is the biggest mistake.
@Ugly_German_Truths26 күн бұрын
@@legoeasycompanydepends a lot on visibility though. Other such blunders often coincided with heavy cloud cover only allowing short glimpses at a small area, hiding even ships close by to the spotted ones. Another factor could be range. If they had searched so l8ng that their fuel was running out they might not have time for a closer look or seeking other ships if positioned in a in a wide defensive pattern...

Super small error at 8:30. it is stated that "all bombs fell to starboard" but the animation shows the bombs impacting the water to the right of the oiler. Since its "facing" us, that is port side for the oiler

The Battle of the Coral Sea had far more implications than the average Lay-person would assume, it set up all the future Nexus points for America's victory at Midway, and this innocuous Naval action had big implications for the Coral Sea Carrier battle, in Simplistic terms, this mistaken flight to what was support ships and not the Carrier Fleet put a Whale of a Hitch in the Japanese Git-A-Long, it screwed their whole schedule, & the Japanese were of the mindset schedules must be met at all cost as later events would pan out, the Japanese upper authorities were very slow when it needed to improvise plans on the Fly, specially when their Plans were Waylaid.
@TheSilentPrince-mt5mx2 ай бұрын
It's the small mistakes which the Japanese could ill-afford to make. Like 'Barbarossa' in 1941, and many of Napoleon's campaigns from 1808 onwards. the enemy had the capacity to absorb losses which the Japanese could not. Thus US commanders could learn from their own, and others, experiences because replacements, often better replacements, were going to compensate. The Japanese had the correct strategic doctrine but failed to execute properly at a tactical level.

Well.. using the bombs to hit something is way better than dropping those over the sea. Logistical vessels are important targets.. a fleet cant move easily without them, the thing is one tanker isnt 100% of the auxiliary ships of a fleet. Take for example the raiding of the Graf Spee in hostile waters of south atlantic, he had two auxiliary ships, one for general cargo, and the other for oil. All for a simple heavy cruiser. Now imagine how many tankers a big fleet should have.

It'd imagine that the Japanese not engaging would have hardly changed the outcomes of the next few phases of the Pacific War. Seeing the loses and difficulty they had sinking only two isolated and weak ships - what loses would the Japanese have taken fighting the carrier force and its fighters? Assuming even the best of likely outcomes - the consequently stripped down IJN air forces would have likely had many claws pulled out for it, and caused a major calculus revision. Since time wasn't on the side of the Japanese, I'd call this mistake bought time for the doomed Japanese.

@AnthonyEvelyn2 ай бұрын
They actually won it. But it was not a strategic victory for them.
@gvibration12 ай бұрын
@AnthonyEvelyn the much bigger picture was that the troop ships for the invasion of Port Moresby turned back. They would have walked in, and WW2 in the Pacific would have been longer and harder. They made 2 other attempts: landing at Milne Bay on eastern tip of New Guinea, and long arduous overland battle from the north of the island.

Note about the suburb of Crace in Canberra, Australia, its named after this Crace family. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Gregory_Crace_(designer) , the interior designers to the kings and queens of England (George III, George IV, and Victoria.. ) well the suburb is really named for his son, who moved to Canberra, and his grandson, who was CO of that task force at the Coral Sea.
