I wanted to get into the older TW games, as a series vet, could you give a recommendation where to start?

FoTS shows they put a lot more passion and care into the game than their newer ones. Several of the historical battles they chose are important parts of the Boshin War with political and cultural consequences on the Meiji restoration and Japan. The way the historical battles are presented can give someone uninformed about Japan and the period an acceptable understanding of the chain of military events. The artistic stylization is really nice and so the graphics aged well. The sound effects are very visceral and real; immersing you in the combat. The music is great. Gameplay is enjoyable and focuses on unit maneuver/usage. The campaign map aesthetic fits the period well and distinguishes FoTS from base Shogun 2. Really the only extra bit of care they could have done is used different dialects for different clan's units. In contrast Warhammer doesn't even have reload animations for gunpowder rifles. It's like they just gave up trying after FoTS

After 400 hours in Shogun 2 I couldn't beat even half of its historical battles on max difficulty, yet in Fall of the Samurais I won all battles on max difficulty and completed all extra conditions for the achievements in like 3 days. That was an amazing journey back in 2014...

Unrelated to this vid, but: With the release of Pharaoh, I found your channel and have been going through quite a number of your total war vids, just watched the red herring one. Thanks for your efforts in shining light upon this mess! After understanding the problem(s) better thanks to your vids, I just again started a Napoleon campaign again (my first TW), and its insane how its providing me with a tactical and strategic challenge I haven't encountered in years! Something you can't find in any modern titles. The "recent" decline couldn't have been more obvious. And fun fact: Just checked steam charts, and at time of this comment the active players of classical TWs (including Rome2, not 3K ofc) vs modern ones is ca. 32k (classic) and 25k (modern). I'd like to think just like some of the leaks, that these numbers do vindicate you haha

Got back into Shogun 2 for the hundredth time not too long ago. Playing a great Saga campaign on legendary, declaring war on all factions turn one and banning all traditional units for myself. Could never have this much fun with anything post-Rome 2

By the way, HP system exists in every total war game and in shogun 2 as well But it implemented so that every units have only 1 HP (2 for cavalry and 2 for heroes). If I'm not mistaken.

I believe that some mods have the cavalry at 1HP as well, or only the horse having 2HP and the rider having 1HP. I do remember buffing cav stats and changing them into 1HP which made their charges much more visceral.

What also makes this first battle in FotS pure A-tier class is that this gameplay (and the effective strategy to earn a "Heroic Victory") is nearly exactly what the Satsuma did in real life, they entrenched their riflemen in the woods and lured a numerically superior Shogunate force (who didn't initially load their guns at all, because they expected to ride peacefully into Toba-Fushimi en-route to Central Kyoto unopposed, LOL) to a volley of French Small Arms fire and British Artillery. The Armstrongs they used also served as a superb demonstration of the effectiveness of Artillery in a DEFENSIVE context. It relieved the entrenched riflemen of any direct melee contact with both the Shinsengumi and the Yūgekitai, who were mostly Pikemen. Two extra facts that make this battle incredibly embarrassing for the Shogunate were that 1) they retreated by burning the local buildings down, which made their troops extra vulnerable to the Satsuma's Snipers, who picked them off one by one. 2) During the first shots of the entire Boshin War in this particular battle, an Armstrong shell detonated a gun/munitions carriage near the horse of one of the Shogun's commanders, Takigawa Tomotaka. The horse bolted, threw Tomotaka off his saddle, and the startled steed ran amok amongst the Shogunate's forces, causing extra chaos and disorder in their ranks as an errant horse galloped in a berserk flurry across the Kansai battlefield.

Sound design is so important. I can get fully immersed in all sorts of 20+ year old games with janky primitive graphics but the moment a piece of in-game sound is low quality, obviously looped or out of place it's like a slap in the face and takes me right out of it.

Even the new Robocop game where they could've obviously just copied the old Robocop gun sound or replicated it, they made it sound like crap.

The historical battles were so good, I neglected them for so long and when I finally tried them I was amazed at how well they transformed the battlescape into feeling like an RTS. I would have paid and played for whole campaigns in this style. Actual unique maps with enemy armies attacking in waves and ambushes felt so good compared to two armies making lines in huge empty fields over and over again.

I suppose it being set in the 12th century gives it less posibilities in mechanics and unit variety than the 19th century but I feel more could have been done, pre-sengoku japan is such a fascinating time period

Agreed on the importance of sound, I especially notice it in FPS games where they've lost touch on how to make good gun sounds, like they're all mistakenly copying older popular FPS games that had notably worse gun sounds than most other games in the series or genre altogether, (I'm looking at you COD Black Ops 1 for a whole chain of releases with similarly hollow plasticky gun sounds without any punch), or more recently, in Robocop Rogue City where they failed to implement the classic Robocop pistol gunfire sound, the visor scanning sound, the hydraulic stomping sounds, etc All some of the most iconic (and immersive) sounds from the movies wasted and replaced with poor recreations.

I did not like rome 2 and thereby never played any game on that engine . I played warhammer 3and i love it and i only buy on sale,I bought war hammer 1,2 and 3 for 60 dolors total. Never bought a dlc and i might buy if the price is right. Shogun 2 is best battle play especially fall of samurai . I own shogun2 bought it on sale for 6 usd . Medieval 2 europa barbarorium played 3 campaigns never owned it and never bought the base gaem. All in all am happy with CA because i buy things on a relatively fair price based on thousands of hours of game play . I dont understand the community why they are unhappy with total war franchise decisions ,I feel the same with current new automobiles in the market ,and that is why i own an suv made in the late 1990's that has been serving me well for less that quarter of the price of a new one with more reliability. In conclusion ,the decsion of buying anything is up to you ,its your responsibility and no one else's. 17:04

This video also shows why I will always consider napoleon a better gun game than FotS. In this game guns are way to powerful and deadly, and artillery is completely unhistorically overpowered. Literally ww1/ww2 howitzer firepower. And you end up basically cheesing AI into 50:1 KD ratios or getting 1000 kills with arty. It's just ridiculous.
