It was one of the predicted impacts of the pandemic - an increase in people turning to alcohol and those already dependent, drinking more.
And today, that is now visible in new statistics, with alcohol-specific deaths rising above 10,000 a year for the first time.
The 2022 data, published by the Office for National Statistics, shows deaths in the UK up a third from 2019, the last pre-Covid year.
Over the last six months Channel 4 News has had access to a rehabilitation centre in South London, meeting those battling to beat alcoholism.

24 years clean. Almost lost my life from alochol abuse. Was a chronic drinker couldn't function without it. Ended up in a hospital and almost died. I quit drinking in January year 2000 haven't had a drink in 24 years hardest thing I've ever done

As someone who grew up in the uk as a teen, you are an outcast if you don’t drink. Not just drink, if you don’t get stupidly drunk, you’re not cool. I never enjoyed drinking until I’m so drunk I pass out and the peer pressure was a constant point of anxiety for me. I dreaded every weekend when your friends will question why you don’t want to go out and get ‘plastered’.

As a man who has never used alcohol or drugs, my heart goes out to the people of The UK. It was my first trip outside the USA back in the 90’s. It changed my life. You deserve better.

I stopped and I hate alcohol the dayI stopped was when I saw my self drinking for 2 days without sleep ordering alcohol on Uber over over again i woke up next day with no money I did not even have money to eat or for the bus to work. Every time I think of alcohol I go for a run. My neighbour asked me why do you keep running middle of the night I told him I’m running away from alcohol.

4 years cold turkey with little to no support. Somehow gave it up in 2020 while everyone doubled down on booze. 5 years of daily heavy drinking beforehand, using drugs, nearly homeless again, you name it. When the choices are narrowed down to death or drink, it was an easy choice, but a hard road. You learn more on those roads, that is the silver lining. Live to learn.

That’s the sad reality. It sometimes has to come down to life or death for one to make the tough choice. I survived death twice. The second one was the most scary experience of my life and I’m never afraid. My fear was the scar I’ll leave on my mum and younger one. To go that way will be unfair to them. My breath was seizing for 3 days straight, chest was tight whenever I lay down, I was sleeping sitting for days. The ambulance refused to take me me, it’s like they wanted me to die. But the God that kept me, has a purpose for me. That light he showed me, I will forever be grateful. I quit cold turkey after that. I quit every vice. All I don now is work, pray and eat fruits.

People, places, and things " plus the way that a person thinks has a lot to do with alcoholesm.. and there is a whole lot of underlying conditions and surcomstandest that a person has to deal with to really really stop drinking. One of the main things that I found out is that you got to change your thinking process on everything that you do in life. Let go of the old you " and start thinking, and doing things differently.( Get out of that comfort zone) And do positive thinking and positive things"and train your mind to stay in that zone. ( Please "I'm not trying to brag) But I have under my belt 6 years of different programs that I graduated from. It's all in the way a person thinks and respond to those thinking habits. Train your mind into thinking different ways.

I totally agree! I also think that cycling should be banned, as there are so many accidents every year. The same goes for driving, horse riding, flying in airplanes, ice skating, swimming..... In fact, if I had power, I would ban the very act of being ALIVE, as the number one cause of death is being alive in the first place.

Alcohol just like any other legal substance it should be taken seriously. Drink in moderation and when possible just avoid it or avoid situations that lead you to drinking. Alcohol intoxication is a form of escapism so to help prevent the urge you should find other healthier ways to escape from the hardships of life.

No one can beat alcoholism, addiction. It's surrender. Abstinence is possible, but who wants to know? There is a way. Residential rehab. It's much cheaper than what is happening.

I find it ironic that even in this story, where they're telling us that the help just isn't there for the people who need it and the situation is only getting worse, that there's still a link for people to get help. At what point do we just accept that telling people to get help or directing them to links is an empty gesture?

@@w.urlitzer1869 Don't include empty gestures, don't tell people help is available to them when it's not. Be truthful, tell them the help is not out there and direct them to campaigns or fundraising to ensure the help is there in the future. Real gestures instead of empty ones.

Addiction is brought on by abuse of some form or mental issue. s that trigger people into self medicating to hopefully get rid of those feeling memories etc. Many things change in people lives and those things can affect them as well. I believe one of my family members were basically abuse beat when they were young by a parent and then the started the self abuse and his can lead down he chain to the kids. It's a very hard thing and more help is needed for the people. T=But its also hard fro them to accept help hence he reason we also see everyone on the streets because they do not want to follow what's required to get the help.

Id been sober for over 2 years when Lockdown hit. I was working 60 hours a week and the sleep, eat, work, sleep, eat, work continuous WITHOUT any ability to chill, go cinema, go fir a meal, have to queue 2/3 hours just for a loaf of bread on my day off sent me back to the bottle. I struggle now to maintain sobriety. Even my hospital specialist and GP expected me (anyone in the same situation tbh) to start drinking again.
