Someone asked why Brian Wilson didn’t sing lead on it. (Younger brother Carl did.) His response was that Carl had an element of sweetness in his soul and his voice that was necessary to the song. I can’t imagine anyone else singing it.
@1401minstrel2 жыл бұрын
One of the many things I love about Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson is the fact none of them seemed to have any ego when it came to who sang lead on songs that each of them had written. On Brian's songs, if Brian felt that Carl had the voice he wanted to hear, Carl would sing it. If Brian wanted to hear Mike's or Al's voice on a lead, then Mike or Al would sing lead. Dennis had Carl sing lead on some of his songs, and even though he didn't write very much, Carl had Dennis sing lead on one of Carl's songs.

By this point in Beach Boys history, Brian Wilson was staying in LA, composing, and recording with the famous Wrecking Crew studio musicians, while the Beach Boys continued to tour without Brian. Once the instrumental tracks were recorded, the other Beach Boys would come to LA to record their vocal parts. Brian was definitely the genius behind these productions.

It's not just that he recorded these songs with Wrecking Crew. That crew had musicians from Chicago, New Orleans, LA, Memphis. They'd played multiple genres. I'll vouch for that; it's a great documentary and they did regard Brian as a genius. It stood out because, on balance, they didn't seem to have a whole lot of respect for the musicianship of most pop artists of the era. The general consensus among the musicians (Hal Blaine and Carol Kaye among the twenty or so on this track) was that, although *they* had no idea of what Brian was trying to do, he seemed very clear about it and they trusted his vision. Mostly.

Speaking of lyrics in this vein, and since you recently did Glen Campbell's "Gentle on my mind", I'd recommend his Wichita Lineman.

Wichita Lineman is one of my all-time favorite songs! If you've never heard his rendition of It Won't Bring Her Back from his final album (Adios), you might enjoy that one. Jimmy Webb wrote it and Glen Campbell performs to perfection.

Not sure you meant to make this connection, but Glen Campbell replaced Brian Wilson in the Beach Boys while they were on tour and Brian was in the studio creating the Pet Sounds album.

Brian Wilson was deaf in one ear, and yet he produced this great stereo album, and at the time most records and radio were all mono. Thank you, Jamel, for your own great taste and appreciation.
@SoundlabStudios632 жыл бұрын
The album actually was released in mono and “duophonic” fake stereo. It just sounds so good that you wouldn’t think it’s mono. The version he is listening to here is the mono version (you can tell because it has the original vocals on the outro. The 90s stereo remix has an alternate vocal)

One of the greatest drops ever. The song begins with an upbeat and joyful piano intro and then wow. Its a downer and but completely enjoyable. Then the song that follows is just a brilliant song of love and despair. I have loved this song since Kevin Arnold got on the bus and watched Winnie Cooper depart on another bus after they had broken up at a field trip to a museum. Winnie was at a different school at that point. And this song played.

I love the fade-out when they're singing in a round. Here's a quote from the film "Amadeus", Mozart speaking: In a play if more than one person speaks at the same time, it's just noise, no one can understand a word. But with opera, with music... with music you can have twenty individuals all talking at the same time, and it's not noise, it's a perfect harmony!
