Someone asked why Brian Wilson didn’t sing lead on it. (Younger brother Carl did.) His response was that Carl had an element of sweetness in his soul and his voice that was necessary to the song. I can’t imagine anyone else singing it.
@1401minstrel
@1401minstrel 2 жыл бұрын
One of the many things I love about Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson is the fact none of them seemed to have any ego when it came to who sang lead on songs that each of them had written. On Brian's songs, if Brian felt that Carl had the voice he wanted to hear, Carl would sing it. If Brian wanted to hear Mike's or Al's voice on a lead, then Mike or Al would sing lead. Dennis had Carl sing lead on some of his songs, and even though he didn't write very much, Carl had Dennis sing lead on one of Carl's songs.

By this point in Beach Boys history, Brian Wilson was staying in LA, composing, and recording with the famous Wrecking Crew studio musicians, while the Beach Boys continued to tour without Brian. Once the instrumental tracks were recorded, the other Beach Boys would come to LA to record their vocal parts. Brian was definitely the genius behind these productions.
@75aces97
@75aces97 Ай бұрын
It's not just that he recorded these songs with Wrecking Crew. That crew had musicians from Chicago, New Orleans, LA, Memphis. They'd played multiple genres. Some of them had been in the biz since before Brian Wilson was born, seen a lot of musicians come and go, and THEY were awed by him as a genius.

I'll vouch for that; it's a great documentary and they did regard Brian as a genius. It stood out because, on balance, they didn't seem to have a whole lot of respect for the musicianship of most pop artists of the era. The general consensus among the musicians (Hal Blaine and Carol Kaye among the twenty or so on this track) was that, although *they* had no idea of what Brian was trying to do, he seemed very clear about it and they trusted his vision. Mostly.

Sloop John B is the worst song on the whole LP. It is out of sync with all the rest and was only put in because the record company wanted something 'commercial' sounding. I always finish listening to side 1 before this track starts.

Brian Wilson became more experimental and “deeper” as the 60s moved on. This album, Pet Sounds, ended up inspiring The Beatles, especially McCartney, with their making of Sgt. Pepper.

Not to mention how contradictory to common belief it weren't the Stones who rivaled the Fab Four. (Are you a Stones or Beatles fan?) The Beach Boys and The Beatles have always been at the forefront of changing the musical landscape. When Sergeant Pepper dropped, Brian Jones basically indefinitly shelved his ambitious 'Smile' because he 'couldn't top Sergeant Pepper'.

@@ckbarry It was a common thing at that time. You were either Team Beatles or Team Stones. Don't ask me who came up with it, but it happend. I agree it's nonsense and each band is good in their own right, and you can appreciate them all without preference. Hell, George wrote the Stones their first hit and John and Paul contributed vocals to 'we love you' (semi based on 'all you need is love') or the one-off band The Dirty Mac. I think a lot of people ignore the Beach Boys when it comes to their ideas and influences. 🙂

Here's a quote from the film "Amadeus", Mozart speaking: In a play if more than one person speaks at the same time, it's just noise, no one can understand a word.
