Sydcarmy shipping aside, Claire's inclusion still feels so awkward. They definitely didn't think of her character in season 1 & are doing retroactive work. That's why in season 2, they mentioned her continuously in flashbacks. In season 3, they basically did the same thing but worse. No matter how much they show her, she doesn't feel like a real character. Pete has much less screen time that Claire & he feels more real. You can tell what kind of person he is. Can't say the same for Claire.

On a side note, I find Sydney's love interests VERY relatable as a Black woman growing up in mostly w. spaces: - a Black man - an Italian man - a man with ginger hair The trilogy is complete!!! 😂😂😂

I actually liked Tina's episode being in this season. Mikey's handling of hiring Tina was so beautiful. And having that with the scene of Sydney coaching Tina while Carmy was gonna start shouting at her was such a nice touch.

My main takeaways: The acting during the scene where Carmy confronts Joel Mchale's character was cinema. Stunning. Syd having a panic attack, mirroring Carmy's trauma, top tier. Give her all the awards 💐. 1. No resolution in the whole damn season, for anyone. 2. We don't need this much of the Faks!!! The ever growing Faks went on entirely too long. 3. Sooo Marcus has no trauma from losing his mother that he was actively caring for?? 🤔 just no grief, hmm I wonder why... 4. Stop trying to make Marcus and Syd happen. Please! Richie and Syd have more chemistry than her and Marcus if we're being honest. 5. To me, the only reason ppl don't want Carmy and Syd together is because she's black! Yeah I said it lol 6. I would love if the writers would stop adding Claire's name every 3 words. That would be great. Please it's unnatural and I'm over it. 7. I vote for Luca and Sydney. I felt a vibe there. We love to see it Great review as always J!

Agree with all points in the OP but point 5, too. At least for me, regardless of race, the worst possible thing two restaurant partners can do is hook up. It’s just overall a terrible idea to mess with anyone at work, but especially two people just starting a whole fine dining establishment & being so young & minimally experienced. Consider how insanely unstable Carmy is. How little emotional regulation he is capable of. All his repressed trauma. Having your business partner screaming at you in this setting is one thing. Having your *significant other* doing what Carmy does? 😶 Sydney deserves WAY better than Carmy. Period. Also, chemistry is nice as the initial spark, but compatibility & communication skills are huge, too. They have a lovely energy between them, no doubt, esp when they’re 1:1 scene, that table repair scene, as well as when they’re cooking together at his apt. But they would be most ideal as close friends for the foreseeable future. And ought to wait to reconnect after they get out of the business! That could be cool, they’d both be more mature, too. P.S. like you, I am rooting for her & Luca. Or heck, maybe someone NOT in the industry. Marcus sees & appreciates her for her talent, and I don’t mind them together. He adds the softness to balance her drive. But her & Luca had a more fun obvious immediate connection.

Carmy needs help to work thru all that trauma. It’s surprising that anyone expects rational response from him. Too much trauma: dad abandoned the family, mom mentally unwell, brother suicide, taking over a failing business, starting a new business. Hopefully the interaction with the Ahole Chef is enough help him help himself. Carmy is frustrating but very realistic.

Confronting abusers in general is so frustrating bec. either they are like Joel, gaslighting their victims or worse, it feels like a case of "the ax forgets but the tree remembers", where the survivor realises they are a simple "footnote" in their abuser's journey. If abusers were able to take accontability for their choices, they wouldnt be abusive in my experience. 💔💔💔

I strongly believe that Sydney and Carmy will be a thing, at some time, in the future. I feel that they are burying that spark and saving it for a future season. I will never forget the chemistry of Sydney and Carmy, under the table , in Season 2. The show is shoving Claire down our throats. They could easily bring the Syd & Carmy love in Season 6, 7 8 or 10 and it would be much more believable than the Claire thing.

This season was just not it for me. Too many flashbacks, too many Faks, and way too much Claire. The best episode was Napkins, beautifully acted and directed (go Ayo). I don't want Sydney with any of these people ( yes, not even Luca). Just take herself, Tina, and Marcus, and head on out to a less toxic place.

Some observations. Concerning your segments: We are Going in Circles! Absolutely, Carm isn't really growing, he reverting, even though he is acknowledging his faults/behavior. I feel like the structure of the season really prevented us from seeing him change. That confrontation with his former abusive Chef, that story beat should have been in the middle of the season, we should have been able to see how Carm grows from that cathartic release of confronting his abuser. Maybe showing him grow would hurt the Syd potentially leaving The Bear storyline. I feel as though they could have made both work. I don't care about Claire Bear! Chef's Kiss. Perfection. No Notes. Sydney Girl, DO NOT Sign that DocuSign segment: Do we know how much of a ownership stake Sydney is going to have in The Bear? We find out her salary from Pete, 70k a year with benefits in 3 months, however he neglects to mention what her ownership stake is going to be. This appears to be new information for Sydney to learn. From the season it doesn't appear, at least to me, Sydney wasn't directly involved in the negotiations as wouldn't she already known her salary, benefits and ownership stake? But clearly from the story she hasn't personally has looked the contract. Maybe I'm reading into things too much, but that omission but be an important story beat in season 4. All I can think about was the dinning room table scene between Carm and Syd, them holding the table up for each other. Carm saying "I wouldn't want to even do this without you" My only question how much does Carm thinks she's worth? Also remember how Uncle Jimmy calls her partner in the later half of episode 5. I'm trying to think of a scene, maybe I'm forgetting one, of Uncle Jimmy calling Carm his partner? I feel as though Sydney was hyperventilating not just because of the toxicity at work with Carm. Which no denying, Carm has literally become his abuser and he doesn't know it. Sydney definitely felt overwhelmed, we know she didn't want to attend the service because of the Sous Chef's offer to her. Which btw, did he offer an ownership stake as well? Compile that with her past failure with her catering business, and now she has the Bear, which again not going great cause Carm, like you said, lost the plot. I can see how Sydney might have a lot of conflicting emotions going on and that just overwhelming her. Change is scary. So is the fear of failing. The regret of leaving. Of that might have just done a number on her. Terry's Funeral Service. While I loved the scenes with the actors. The scene with the real life Chefs talking about why they cook, I really could have done without it. That was pretentious as fuck. The writers drank their own cool-aid. "Future Husband to Sydney" - PREACH. Personally loved the confrontation scene with Carm at the restaurant. I hope that was cathartic for Carm. Or maybe he could start to the very least recognize he's sort of turned into his abusive asshole mentor. ALL ABOARD THE SYD-LUCA SHIP. Traitor. Tina, Marcus & Sugar Were also there. The Tina solo episode - directed by Ayo Edebiri was by far the best of the season. Hands down. My personal second favorite, the Sugar episode with her mom, I loved it. The Farks and The BUTCHERING of Comedy. While I found them endearing in first two seasons. This season, it was just too much. I get it The Bear is listed as a Comedy for the Emmys, but The Bear isn't a laugh track comedy, and let's stop trying to pretend it is with these clown. And please, I beg the writers, we do not need John Cena ever again. Honestly. Please I beg you writers. Biggest Problem: Season 3 is Really Just Season 2.5 Chef's Kiss. Perfection. No Notes. Loved the review! Going back to see your Season 2 review! Thanks

Love your review, you are spot on. There was way too much flashbacks, too much Faks, too much reminiscing of Claire... They are trying to tell us she was the love of Carmy's life like he wasn't struggling to call her his gf 🙄 let's be real, this thing was a situationship Not enough Sydney, not enough Marcus, Tina, Ebra, Gary ! But I do understand Carmy's arc, I find it interesting that he's regressing, to me he was even worse than in season 1 which kinda make sense because one thing about Carmy, he's going to learn the wrong lessons. Overall I did like this season, it wasn't great, definitely felt like a filler but it was good And I'm with you on the Sydney and Luca ship I see the vision😅

i enjoy the negative character development of carmy because the seeds were there since s1, my entire problem with this season is that we did not get enough of the og staff fighting back or showing they had problems with his behaviour or interacted as much like they did in s1-s2 , instead whoever in the writing decided to focus so much on cameos, the faks, montages and celeb chefs it became so destracting i was asking myself if i was watching the bear??? also the confrotationb seen with the boujie chef was good but i also thought it was hypocritical since they had to bring in millions of other celeb chefs to glorify themselves and save face in a desperate attempt to say : well the fine dining industry/program isnt ALLL bad its just that one bad apple and i was endlessly frustrated with this type of mindset cause from what i heard the fine dining industry does have extreme bullying so like they cant just backtrack like this all the time, there was some good episodes and moments but this season was way too messy

I haven’t watched season 3 yet but it seems like the Bear season 3 is getting the same response as Bridgerton season 3 which is: after all the hype and anticipation, it just isn’t as good as the first two seasons, it feels more like set-up for season 4 than it’s own season. Funny how the complaints are exactly the same for the same season number. Also people standing by the fact that season 2 of both shows are the best season is really such a funny coincidence😂😂😂. Oh boy, looks like I will have to approach season 3 of the Bear the same way I did season 3 of Bridgerton: set my expectations low and just enjoy the ride.

On your overarching thoughts of season 3, you get absolutely no rebuttal from me. There's a slight disagreement on the Ice Chips episode. We needed to see that Donna-Natalie mother-daughter relationship bridged, and so we needed the two of them in a room to carry one good episode, but the lazy writing to set up that meeting of the minds annoyed me. And I'm just a guy! 🤣🤣🤣 To me the finale was great (even if I was annoyed by the TBC at the end), but my favorite episode of the season is Napkins. I agree with you, though, that it's a shame Tina's story essentially dropped off the table after Mikey gave her her fresh start. This season annoyed the HELL out of me, but I'm here to see if Season 4 will FINALLY give us some real resolutions to some issues that weren't properly addressed in Season 3.
@JeannesMovieChats

This season definitely lacked the heart of the show, moreover Carmy/Syd/Richie communication. I think they had exactly 1 conversation where they yelled at each other the whole 2nd episode. These 3 characters have so much history and charisma, and we barely see them interact, that was definitely a letdown. Carmy/Syd disappoints as well, their conversation was the exact copycat from season 2, no progression. Honestly, such a bummer. Episode 1 was not it for me, too many food shots. No, it looks beautiful, but can we please get to the plot? What was a point of that 30 minutes food edition? I also did not like Donna/Sugar episode. I wanted someone else there, maybe Carmy at least. I don`t know, it was a mess, and looking back at it I find many episodes being fillers. It is okay to have fillers when you film 20 episodes season, but not in this situation.

Yaaaasss🙌🏾 I am so with you, I ship them end game but I think she needs to leave frfr, make him feel it! She needs to go for her own mental sanity, we not doin the trauma brought on from a yt👀🫣 man, sorry not sorry, just stop it😅 Oh but guys I think the bigger picture of this season would be them showing us that even though Claire is mentioned as the "peace", it's really Sydney, how she's there for everyone and doing small things that are so meaningful. They're pushing for Claire but it's mainly the family wanting Carmey to be happy finally and they think that's what will bring him happiness. They're also showing the limportance of Sydney bringing everyone together (small gifts as I mentioned, checking on everyone, putting carmey in his place and considering his habits, having one on one times with everyone) as a writer I would probably stage it in this way to show the dynamics and build on the closing to a romantic chapter in depth with mental health. After this episode it's going to be hard for everyone to let her go, she is a part of the foundation but doesn't feel heard and seen. It's time for them to choose Sydney in order for her to choose to stay. I can see the big picture to some of the storyline, they know we're not dumb😂 they have to throw us off somehow. The writing has always been those two being end game. You don't mirror characters like that unless they're meant to be. I believe Sydney is in love woth Carmey and has yet to realize it, not that she wants to be, but she can't help caring about him amd his family/friends. He's the one falling for her while learning to forgive himself for letting everyone in his life down. It's gonna take a lot of time.

Feel like the season was beautifully shot but was annoyed that there was no real dialogue or relationship development amongst the main characters. Seems like it was all about the main characters feeling isolated & shut out due to Carmie's behavior. I agree - too much of the Faks brothers (and the whole scene with them going to talk to Claire was ridiculous) and too long with Sugar & Mom in labor episode. So agree, S3 was the characters internal processing of S2, a continuation of it. But, there was a different energy after Carrie talked to the asshole chef, maybe the angst leading up to that was the point of the season?

I feel so bad for hyping this show up to so many people in anticipation for season 3. They're going to be hit with some disappointment. The same damn thing happened with Westworld. I didn't have as many qualms with season 3 as a lot of people but I have my opinions on some things. I didn't mind the faks, the third one was...a choice, lol. I didn't mind Claire in this season, I don't think she was as present as you described but it is what it is. Carmy, oh carmy. Throwing himself into his work instead of dealing with his shit as usual. Absolutely loved Marcus, despite how little of him we got. Richie felt odd this season. He was shown as this 180° changed man at the end of season 2 and then we get a lot of his old self showing up. I have a prediction as to how the show will end. Be forewarned, it's not a happy one lol. The show deals a lot with generational trauma. Both with Carmy's family and the restaurant business as shown in the s3 finale. How they take a little bit of the head chef and restaurant culture to their next place. I have a strong suspicion Carmy will follow in the path of his brother Michael. Not dealing with anything and just surpressing it to the point where he ends his life, after setting Sydney up for success and to take his torch going forward.

I think people are crazy thinking there’s romance b/t syd and carmy. It’s a big brother/dad/mentor relationship and she’s confused because she admires and respects him for being the best but still thinks he’s an asshole. Just like how Carmy thinks of chef Dave. If jeremy allen white looked a couple years older than he does, we’d call syd carmy shippers creepy. Like if it turns romantic, Syd is now dating her BOSS who’s quite a bit older than her and already treats her in toxic ways before dating.
