The answer is a bit complicated but simply put the creature upon which the unicorn is based (the rhino) still exsists. However the unicorn itself doesnt. Balaam prophecied and said that Israel had the strength of the unicorn. The Hebrew word Ra’em. Numbers 23:22 And 24:28. This animal is also mentioned in Deuteronomy 33:16 as having horn(s). The same animal but now R’m pronounced “Rayem” is also mentioned in Job 39:9-10. The creature is described here as being untamable. I don’t think the translators of the KJV were talking about the rhinoceros since “rhinoceros” had its own word they would have used. And they had the word “wild ox” which they could have used too if they were talking about that. The KJV translators purposely said unicorn and knew exactly what a unicorn was. If you have studied how the 1611 KJV was translated you would know how legit they did it. I believe the Bible is really talking about a unicorn and that Balaam was prophesying and used a unicorn as an analogy for the strength of Israel.

Shadowfax from lord of the rings was not a unicorn. He was one of the mayoress which are great horses who are large, fast, intelligent and strong. They are said to be so fast their hoofs catch fire when they run. They are also said to be untamable and despite their great size they are said to be difficult to find. (They don’t have horns, and are drawn to virtuous heroes rather than virginal maidens) Unicorns are dainty, thin, and beautiful horses their hair is said to be so pure white they look like sunlight. You were correct about the legends of unicorns being drawn to virgin maidens and that very much being their fatal flaw.

Nowadays, we know that what Ctesias and Abu Rayhan al-Biruni described was actually either an Indian rhinoceros or a Javan rhinoceros (the only two rhino species with only one horn).

The 麒麟 qilin are kirin are not, and never were, unicorns. Qilin comes from an entirely different cultural and mythological background, and has only in modern times been referred to as “Chinese unicorn” not because it’s connection to the unicorn myth, but it’s cultural connection between a people and a mythical beast.

Well if you look at the Latin The KJV is translated from, there are several instances where the Latin for rhinoceroses and has more than one horn is used but the KJV uses 'unicorn'

Perhaps. Hormone cycles are complicated, but I imagine that if unicorns responded negatively to hormones in a woman as a result of sexual intercourse, I imagine it would be as a result of the presence of high levels of progesterone. Progesterone is associated with pregnancy and the end of the menstrual cycle. This means that unicorns would avoid pregnant women or menstruating women. Moreover Progesterone levels take a while to reach homeostasis after birth so even after that a unicorn might avoid her. However, again, hormones are complicated. Before, during and after pregnancy you will find that there exists a particular cocktail of testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, hCG and other hormones that would not cause a unicorn to freak out. You may have to pull out you linear programming chart to try figure this out.
