What you've described there Matt just goes to prove my theory of the Joy and Happiness the Fab Four brought not only to the UK and The US, but the entire world, and they're still doing it 60 years on and with two members of the band sadly no longer with us. So yes I'm with you on this. it's when Beatlemania exploded across the world and they became the musical legends they will always be. There truly has been nothing since to match that incredible power and success that they had in those first few months of '64. Whilst on the subject of the legend of The Beatles, can you believe that on Saturday 2nd Nov it will be a year since we got "Now and Then", the very last Beatles song? That was such an emotional time for me, hearing that for the first time. Y'see even six decades on these guys are still touching hearts and inspiring people. Now that's what legends are made of Matt...

I've seen that concert so many times. In recent years I've really focused on George. Check it out. That cat was professional. I love the way he sings, "Roll over Beethoven" and gives up singing at the quiet microphone and moves to the other microphone. Then, I noticed George looks over at John, as if to say: "Did you notice what happened, Lennon?" If that wasn't cool enough... after George's guitar solo, he goes back to the first microphone to see if the idiots are paying attention at the soundboard. 😅 No go.... Once again George heads over to the louder microphone, however.... before he heads over the second time, I noticed fans in the front row desperately yelling, "We can't hear you!" I don't think that microphone ever did get turned up much. Definitely an epic performance. Thanks for the video Matt.

The Washington D.C. concert was indeed special. I remember seeing it in a movie theater when it was released in 1964. I was 12 years old! It may have been their greatest live performance. You are right that it was a moment in time in that subsequent performances started to go South. I also remember feeling sorry for them having to stop and move their equipment with no assistance! I'll have to watch it again (been a while since I've seen it). And I'll be sure to focus more on the fans! Fun video, Matt. Your enthusiasm is contagious.

Matt, thanks for another great Beatles video,On youtube you can watch The Beatles play to silent audiences who only applauded and cheered at the end for their great live performances, even with the primitive limited sound systems they had at the time, feedback monitors hadn't even been invented yet, When they played in Sweden in 1963,Paris in 1964,Italy in 1965 and in Japan in 1966. And audiences both female and male of ages also were silent during their performances and only applauded at the end, of their 1964,1965 and 1966 New Music Express Poll Winners concerts.a And at their last concert on August 29th at Candlestick park recorded on just a little early mid 1960's tape cassette recorder ludicrously at Paul's suggestion which is on several youtube channels, they played great and rocking too which is on KZbin.

Thank you Matthew for recognizing the undeniable importance of this performance. It has only been fairly recently that I have come to realize that it is their greatest SHOW because of its energy and importance, though I would offer that they played and sounded better on several other live performances, such as Royal Variety and those incredible Australia shows. Alas, here are some stream-of-conscious thoughts about this show I jotted down a few months ago. Apologies if it’s a bit rambling, but here you go: Washington Coliseum concert What were the Beatles emotional reactions when they realized stage right microphone volume was unacceptably low? Were they angry, were they disappointed, or were they indifferent because they were so excited? Random, I know. On the line “from me to you”, Paul does that whimsical singing thing and then he says “yeah” in the last verse. “from me to you” is perhaps the low light of the concert. 🤷🏼‍♂️ The Beatles were great singers, great songwriters, great arrangers, but lousy song introducers, especially Paul McCartney. Wow, could he be any lamer? Imagine a world where Paul was slick and thoughtful and better at introducing songs. There’s something incredibly difficult about singing the harmony to a “I Saw Her Standing There”. Specifically the word “her”. I’ll bet you if you take 50 live performances by The Beatles john is flat on 48 of those. #Reality The Washington Coliseum concert is the only show the Beatles are more excited to be playing in the audience is to be watching! Three highlights in the show: roll over Beethoven, long tall Sally, and this boy! The DC Colosseum show where is the closest The Beatles would ever get. Still on their way up, so excited to be in the US, and playing the show of their lives. It seems Ringo got the loudest cheer for “I want to be your man”. He sings wildly sharp especially when he sings, “tell me that you love me baby”, and it’s just fantastic. It’s clear that the Beatles did not need to perform well at the show; they just needed to perform with energy. It is the most energetic show of their careers. As is natural in live performances, the Beatles play everything way too fast, especially Please Please Me. Meanwhile, most people won’t realize or noticed that their guitars are tune down a half step, just as they are for the Ed Sullivan performance. Surprisingly, Paul does not mention Sophie tucker when introducing “till there was you”. Perhaps he was worried Americans would be confused or they would be offended by the reference. Honestly, I’m surprised he didn’t do it. Why does Paul wait so long on the bed to sing, “of dawn, “of dawn and dew”? The second time through the bridge??? What was he thinking??? He is SO behind the beat, it’s weird. Musically, one wonders what singing a half step lower on all of the songs did to their pitch. Is it intuitive to maintain your a good pitch or perfect pitch when you’re off a half step, or are you more inclined to sing it correctly when it’s the key that you’re used to hearing? On “she loves you”, as they did whenever they perform live, they seeing “oo” a bit LATER (half beat?) than on the record. I wonder how that evolved. Did they record the song and then begin playing it live and then decided to change it, or did they who knows? Why doesn’t anyone ever ask the Beatles, or rather Paul and Ringo, did you ever stop to think how much joy you were bringing to the world??? Your songs made 1 billion people happy just through listening. And they still do. You understand that? Do you appreciate it? Do you think about it? Does it humble you? Watching Brian Wilson’s father‘s song being performed on Lawrence Welk made a lasting impression on him as he realized millions of people were made happy by listening to that. He realize the impact of music to make people happy and even though he was constantly tortured and depressed, he use this as motivation for his creations. On twist and shout, John correctly sings, “well work it on out…” In the second verse, while George and Paul mysteriously come in on, “twist ya little girl”. And from there it’s a cluster f*ck for a few bars. Paul is spectacular on Long tall Sally. His pitch is perfect and his attitude is screaming. On roll over Beethoven, watch out John and Paul stand back with Ringo and take it all in as George takes the lead for their opening song in their first United States concert, where everyone’s going crazy. And then George’ gets to do the same thing with “from me to you”, actually talking to Ringo back there. Not only do we get to hear George saying the lead part louder than Paul’s harmony in the last verse, I just realize is the only song where a verse is sung with the harmony after it wasn’t at first! We also hear John jumping to the high harmony in the chorus of “I want to hold your hand” on the word “hand”. You would’ve thought that it was Paul taking a high part They started the set with a cover and ended with two more! #Interesting And Paul mentions that they already ran out of time but still do long tall Sally which wasn’t even on the record. That was their indulgence. That song is their happiest moment on stage of their careers, I would argue. On “This Boy”, John hits the note during the bridge with the word “my”, while he was not able to do it on the Ed Sullivan show two nights before, and often had problems cracking on this note. “Til there was you” Paul is sweating like a banshee. Ok, that’s enough. Oh, one more thing: I noted when they flip the drum kit, and if I’m not mistaken it goes like this: N - 3 songs, flip 180 degrees S - 3 songs, flip back to original N - 3 songs, turn 90 degrees E - 2 songs, turn 180 degrees W “Long Tall Sally” Though the distribution of songs to each side of the audience is uneven (North 6, South 3, East 2, West 1), each side had very special moments. South got to see “This Boy”, maybe the highlight moment of their career. East got to see “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, which is the song they all especially came to hear. And West got to experience the FINALE, which is maybe the most energy the Beatles ever offered. This after probably thinking they were left out of being faced by the Beatles. If I had my choice, I might say South for “This Boy” and “I Want to Be Your Man”. Only Beatles fans think of such wacky things as these. Oh, and by the way, I was still in my mother’s belly less than 2 miles from the show near Catholic University. I was born the day Ringo reunited with the band in Australia. 🤓

I also met two people and know a third one who saw The Beatles in concert, one woman and one man who were my high school teachers one who saw them in 1966,and one who saw them in 1965 and the other is my second cousin who saw them at the Baltimore Coliseum when she was 16 in 1964, a year before I was even born and she became a psychologist. They all told me that they were close enough to them to see and hear the The Beatles and that they were great. I'm sure that when teenage girls listened to The Beatles records and songs on the radio most of them weren't screaming, they knew what their music sounded like and they loved it.

This video gets me even MORE excited for “Beatles ‘64”. Can’t wait to see/hear what they did with Washington Coliseum restoration. Meanwhile, it’s funny the different things we notice from the concert. Until you mentioned it, I had NEVER noticed the different attendees, nor the junk on stage, nor Ringo getting pelted. Most of the things I noticed were musical things, like vocal mixes, song tempos, performance nuances different from the record, Paul’s silly/annoying “From me, to you-oo” line. Whatever. It’s all good stuff. It’s so cool to be talking about this stuff 60 years later. Thanks for bringing it more of the attention it deserves. One last thing: When the three lads join on a single mic for “This Boy”, don’t you think that THAT was the exact moment they had finally reached the SUMMIT of their success. Sort of like, “We made it, boys. We conquered America. And isn’t it marvelous?!” Nothing they ever did after that night would be quite as EXCITING.

This is a great description, I'm gonna have to watch this again soon! I think we all have moments when for us The Beatles became legends, and for many of us in the UK it was the Royal Variety Performance in November '63. As an 8 year old boy it didn't matter whether they became big in any other country, with this show The Beatles were never the same again, they were constantly front page news, Beatlemania had arrived!

Funny I only concentrate on the Beatles but next time I will check out the crowd. I did notice in the front row a group of them had on thier laps the Beatles tour guide the very one I own and 65 and a 66 one is also in my collection. I think they became legends on the Sullivan show but yes, as the first real concert they became the talk of the town. I also liked how George would try to clear of part of the stage with his shoe at times. Great show of course and fun to watch. Love your videos and your editing ! Because they were toned down on The Ed Sullivan Show. They couldn't go wild there like they did at the Coliseum. Perhaps you haven't seen the Coliseum concert. If you had you would notice a BIG difference between their Sullivan performance and the Coliseum concert. Remember how when Elvis was first on Ed Sullivan, they shot him from the waist up? They didn't want to show Elvis' hips gyrating on National TV which was a show that the WHOLE FAMILY watched. LOL TRUE. So rock groups that were on Ed Sullivan were told to control their movements.
