The Beatles performing “Hey Jude.”
Hey Jude topped the charts in Britain for two weeks and for 9 weeks in America, where it became The Beatles longest-running No.1 in the US singles chart as well as the single with the longest running time.
The Beatles did not record their promotional film until Hey Jude had been on sale in America for a week. They returned to Twickenham Film Studio, using director Michael Lindsay-Hogg who had worked with them on Paperback Writer and Rain. Earlier still, Lindsay-Hogg had directed episodes of Ready Steady Go! And a few months after the film for Hey Jude he made The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus TV special that featured John and Yoko but wouldn’t be shown until 1996
To help with the filming an audience of around 300 local people, as well as some of the fans that gathered regularly outside Abbey Road Studios were brought in for the song’s finale. Their presence had an unlikely upside for The Beatles in their long-running saga with the Musicians’ Union in that the MU were fooled into believing the band were playing live, when in fact they were miming for the vast majority of the song. Paul, however, sang live throughout the song.
The video was first broadcast on David Frost’s Frost On Sunday show, four days after it was filmed. At that point transmission was in black and white although the promo was originally shot in colour. It was first aired in America a month later on 6 October 1968, on The Smotheres Brothers Comedy Hour.

When I'm 64... Well, now I am. Been listening to The Beatles since I was a little kid, thanks to my older brother (RIP Joe). I remember crying as a 10 year old when I heard the band broke up, my mom consoling me, telling me that they would make music forever, and of course, their influence is still going strong. On occasion, I watch this video, and start tearing up about halfway through, and I'm balling when they get to the 'na, na, nas...' How did four guys have so much influence on me, the world, and how so many of us think and feel? Watching this is both incredibly wonderful and sad at the same time, reminding me of the beauty of their music, but also of the challenges we now face as a people. Ultimately, however, I'll keep smiling, as long as I have these songs to warm my heart :)

@@CrestedSaguaro520 Absolutely! I own most of the Beatles albums on CD (remember, I'm old, lol), and I purchased the blue hits collection that was re-released with extra songs, just so I could have 'Now & Then'. I think it's a fab song, and a fitting conclusion to the most important story rock & roll has ever told :)

Me! In Calgary, Canada. My son is going to England with his soccer team for training next week, and will visit Liverpool! I can’t stop talking about the Beatles. That brought me to this video. It's impossible to have the same fervor for life that they had back then because it doesn't exist anymore back then they had hope for the future and everyone had a god of some form inside themselves nowadays we've sold the collective soul of humanity for profit we don't have hope or God. The world is becoming a worse place by every passing day so the art that cones out today is going to be filled with resentment and hostility leading to an abuse cycle where we mirror the art and the world around us. You can break the cycle and focus on pure love but you wont be accepted by the people of the modern era you're out of time drifting find inner peace because this world isn't for you anymore.

Paul says it is. I suspect though it's more about McCartney himself. Its 1968, there's already rumblings and a divide in the Beatles. Could this be a song more about reassurance to himself? Don't make a bad situation worse. Take a sad situation (ie end of Beatles and make it better).

I was recently interviewing for a job in KC. I was a stranger in a strange land, a little nervous , a little out of place and alone. I stopped in a coffee shop to get some Jo and gather myself before I went before the man. There were a smattering of customers about mostly single, unremarkable folk. It was raining which happened to be the first good rain wed seen in the region in sometime. Honestly, I was a bit lost looking for the beginning of the next chapter of my life. Then this song came on and I began to softly sing it to myself as a self soothing attempt of which id become quite adept at over the last 5 years. Then a single older lady a few tables away joined in. Then a man sitting on a live seat then another and another. Nobody was trying to hard. It was sublime. I left after I was done and we all exchanged smiles, nods and waves. I nailed the interview and got the job. Sir Paul is an extraordinary talent. He is a gift to Humanity and his grace and compassion and talent set me at ease and gave me a boost that wasn't originally there. What a song. The Beatles.......wow. P.S. True Story

I remember sitting in the back seat of my girlfriends parents vehicle when this song was playing on the radio. It was the first night that I had met her parents and we hit it off immediately. They took me home after a high school football game. It was in September 1968 and I was lucky enough to stay friends with Di’s family the rest of my life. Sadly, Di passed away from cancer two years ago. After her funeral, the undertaker opened the back of the hearse so I could sit next to Di’s casket. I spent about 30 minutes with her and I felt lucky to have been able to tell her how much that she had meant to me. Rest In Peace Babe.

I think it's lovely how Paul wrote this song for John's son Julian. All these years later now that Julian is an adult he must feel proud to have had a song wrote for him the way that Paul wrote this.

Ringo singing along without a microphone to sing into always gets me at 5:38. He's the best. You can just see it in the Get Back sessions. He's the glue that held them together, and it's made even more apparent that this video was taken JUST as he returned to the band after Paul criticized his drumming. Such a good dude. He's the perfect band mate for a popular band when the highest of egos are involved. He just wants to jam out, he doesn't want to bicker. He genuinely enjoyed the music that the other 3 wrote. You can see it in this video.
