My dad kept saying what are you going to do with your life and I kept saying, but dad I'm going to be a rock star and make lots of money! Well all went well for awhile, then life got in the way. I got drafted into the army and got married and had kids and a job and life goes on. I always listen to music from the 60's and dream on, I think that the 60's music makes old people still feel young when it is played today. My mom passed earlier this year (May '24) and she told me many times of how she and her sisters had to practically beg on their knees to their father so they all could watch Ed. She was a high school senior, JFK was still fresh on everyone's minds, and this brought happiness back into their lives. When he finally caved in, the girls ran out into the neighborhood to bring a friend over to watch the Beatles on their TV. Everyone was in the living room watching and having the best night of their young woman lives. It makes me so happy to think of her getting elated seeing The Beatles for the first time. She even said her parents, who didn't know English that well, enjoyed them too!

A friend of mine who is older told me a story about when this performance aired on television, he was a boy about the age of 9 or 10, his father being a much more older and stern man, never gave a wack about the rock stars like little richard and elvis Presley, he was more of a jazz orientated music lover. But as soon as he saw this live on TV, he was glued to the screen, and he could not stop admiring them. As soon as the performance was over, he said, "they're some pretty fine musicians aren't they? They have a future going for them."

Mike Scott Singh John said the Beatles were more popular than Jesus, and he was right at the time. It was only the outraged American conservative bible belt Christians who started burning albums and effigies of the band, also conveniently using the outrage (that they had created) to demonise the Beatles championing of black music and black musicians (because Jesus was a racist, right?). John was simply expressing his opinion, but apparently his right to freedom of speech is only relevant if it agrees with the same people who believe that the earth is 10,000 years old and evolution is a myth. Robert Pitman hit the nail on the head when he wrote about Americans inability for introspection and the hypocrisy at the fact that a country that claims to be so staunchly Christian is the most Godless county on the planet. Bible Belt bible bashers can't actually see (either by wilful ignorance or sheer literal stupidity) that the type of hate and violence they promote is in direct contradiction to everything Jesus taught. Real Jesus, not 'Conservative' Jesus. Oh, can you explain how deciding not to tour anymore 'broke their spirit'? Firstly, that decision was judged solely on the fact that they could hear their own playing over the screaming... over the next 4 years they produced more albums than they had in the previous 9, including some of the most iconic records ever made. Sgt Peppers, The White Album, Abbey Road.. how could they write and record some of the best music ever produced before or since with a 'broken spirit'?

@@robertbykowski1398 only if you’re tool, but let’s break it down. The Beatles wrote the most simplistic pop songs, each 2 minutes long with no challenge. Easy and quick to record. Tool has some of the most complex metal there is, several 15 minute songs carefully crafted with lots of detail (and I’m sure these songs involved lots of failed takes and overdubs given how hard they are to play). Figures why Tool takes so long to record an album while the Beatles made multiple albums in one year…DURR🤪

My mom was 5 years old and has always told me the story of watching them on Ed Sullivan for the first time. All of 5 her siblings along with her parents and my great grandfather, who rarely watched Ed Sullivan but he made sure to watch that night because he had heard so much hype. They all crowded around the television and she said by the end of the first song the whole family was hooked. My great grandfather kept saying “son muy buenos, son muy buenos.” Which translates to “they’re really good, they’re really good” . He barely even spoke English but he understood good music when he heard it! So much so that the following day he took my mom to the record store and bought her the first Beatles album which was a huge deal because my mom grew up very very low income so to spend the $1.25 on a record and not on food was like WOAH. And she was so grateful, and she gifted that exact record to me when i started getting into the Beatles as a teenager and i have it hanging on my wall to this day. I like to say I’m fourth generation Beatle fan☺️

I was 6 and their performance of "All My Loving" that night persuaded my folks to admit they had some real talent (we all watched it together, just like your Mom and her parents). Beatles music became an acceptable sound around my home after that. Can I just say that early Beatles are just as good as late Beatles? A lot of music fans seem to be focused only on their late period (Revolver through Abbey Road) but they were great since the start, this song being the best example. Even Bob Dylan pointed out them being special saying: "their chords are just outrageous, man" and that was his reaction when he listened to them for the first time, in the early 60's

It’s so sad that John always seemed in a position of not enjoying his success. True that JOHN felt awkward & odd performing for a bunch of lunatic young girls. The others chose to enjoy it. Hell he wrote HELP! Because he was terribly unhappy. Here he is inside the eye of a hurricane and for comparatively silly reasons he kept focusing on the negatives. He preached Peace & Love. Peace can also be Peace of mind. John never really found that. Perhaps he wasn’t supposed to. However his drive to find what he was looking for pushed him to accomplish great things- although he would downplay things at the time. I do believe watching the other Beatles and how they reacted both annoyed him AND pulled him in. He almost found pleasure vicariously. Sad

655 Sigua At age 5 he stood between his parents and was told to choose. Then chose and watched his mother hurtfully walk away.... ran after her. Apparently Dad just left knowing Julia was already with another man and child. He was a Merchant Marine so he was off for too long of a period for his young bride to wait. That is when his Aunt Mimi intervened and took him with her. How tough was that on everyone? Mimi being very PROPER was like a school principal. No warmth. I am sure she loved him- in her own way but JOHN grew up without obvious love and affection. Nobody was particularly proud of John. He was also very bright and witty. Quick with a joke. I doubt that endeared him to anybody except eventually the media and fans. Once again he was branded the tough cheeky guy. I believe inside JOHN wanted to be all the things HE NEVER HAD. Here he is a very young husband and father while the BEATLES are international heartthrobs. He busted his ass to get there but it had to be difficult. The “ Sorry girls he is married.” Beatle. Additionally, they were constantly on the move. He might have been home with his wife and child but instead every man’s dream is unfolding before him. He is rich and famous and women want him and it had to seem like wtf? Paul is zipping around socially... having his “ rabbit died you are going to be a father/husband( Demanded by his Father James) moment of horror extinguished by a miscarriage. Paul- and I am a huge fan- dodged a bullet.... and wouldn’t have even considered getting hitched had his father- which John had no clue as to feel that bond and support no matter what- not stepped in. Cynthia always pointed out how calm, supportive and loving John was when she became pregnant. One of if not the most desired man on earth and yet he was married with a child. Having not “planned it “ is one thing but to suddenly be a BEATLE-- JOHN LENNON! Wow let’s be honest. You know it took a toll on his marriage bc of the insane young women throwing themselves at all four. If he partook. He is an adulterer if he abstains he is going to feel resentful bc although he married the Mother of his son that’s the only reason they were married. He may of cared for her but I seriously doubt he was close to being in love. I think Mimi’s deceased husband was GEORGE. Another LOSS in John’s realm of people. I am certain it was the then typical dry,Formal,Decorum. JOHN had a mountain of unresolved issues that caused him to be a “ tough guy” around Liverpool... which was a rough town. He had no siblings. Because his world was different then the others he was inclined, if not ENCOURAGED to ramble on about social and political issues. John could not stop from being himself. As a result we had the bigger than Christ or whatever he was being asked about bc he was the INTELLECTUAL BEATLE. His answer made perfect sense in UK. In the Deep South and bible belted America they burned records, pictures, memorabilia. They also threatened their lives. In Memphis after JOHN apologized they found bullet holes in their planes fuselage. A cherry bomb went off and everybody looked at John. How can anybody deal with THAT. That’s why they stopped touring and they all knew it. There was some friction. The other 3 toured in their own band but JOHN never got to that point. In fact according to MDC he shot John in part for the religious comment. So for a man blessed with so many gifts to endure a fun comfortable life- did he get more than a few years? No. Too short I m o

What can you say but pure genius. Their voices are incredible and their music was revolutionary. Good Lord it was all just a friggin miracle these 4 guys got together. All these years later and it’s still good. Amazing.

George is my favourite Beatle but he was not a good guy by any stretch of the imagination. He cheated constantly on his partners and slept with Ringo's wife.

They were actually playing those instruments live. No lip sync, recording backups or trickery going on. I was 7 and remember that night vividly. The world changed after that show. I cant really describe it, but trust me it did.

Saw it live. My dad was making fun of them, laughing and saying “They’ll never last”. I still remind him of that- he’s 93 now. I was 9 then and said “ No no, you’ll see they’ll be around.” It seemed as big as watching a moon landing. It kinda was that big, come to think of it.

@Babaloo Bimbo Both my mom who was the 33 and myself.(12 then) both loved Elvis and The Beatles. Most of the groups then were heavily influenced by Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Buddy Holly when they first started playing.
