Description continued from above! Lennon’s rhythm guitar for “Nowhere Man” is tightly played and fairly straightforward. All chords here are referenced with respect to the capo. He comes in at 0:00 with a long upstroked Em7 chord before strumming straight 8th notes on the Gm. He consistently strums the Gm in this way with notaccents. During transitions between song segments, he typically strums a single D chord quarter note on beat one, while intra verse he strums two 8th notes on beat one. He likewise accents the offbeats of the D chord going into the bridge, such as at 0:22. For bridge one, it sounds like he is playing the G chord as a barre chord. This is due to the slight sliding up and down you can hear on the original between the alternating F#m and G chords. I believe he played the barre G on bridges 1 and 3, with an open G voicing during bridge 2. In the second verse, he pulls off from the G chord to the D chord at 1:01. There is a muted Em7 strum on beat one at 1:03. During verse 3 beat 1 of the first A chord it sounds like John accidentally goes to the G chord for a split second before hammering on to the correct A chord. Notice the powerful accented strumming on beat one and the following offbeats during bridge 3 at 1:53. At 2:15 he lets the Em7 chord hang for 2 beats. John then ends the song (2:26) on the D chord with a powerful strum pattern of one-two-three-and-and-one.

I've been waiting for this cover since I first followed you, and I'm so happy to watch it finally! I'm impressed about John's part of the solo, I never paid attention to it before and now makes sense. John's strumming is what gives body to George's lead notes, I always thought they were playing the exactly same at unison. Also I'm amazed you nailed the tone using the ~always forgotten~ middle pickup by its own, I always thought they used the bridge-middle posicion on the reccording. Great to see you back, man! Keep the great stuff!
@mattiboo2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It is my belief that John and George intended to play the same thing during the solo, George just being a bit more precise about it! It's true, the middle pickup is the hidden gem of the Strat - it seems more people are becoming hip to it though!
@CarlosVargas-cn7rx2 жыл бұрын
@@mattiboo It shows so well the style of them both, is just a little proof more on how even in the smaller thing they were genious! I'm happy on people knowing how well they can sound using the middle pickup on its own, the clean tones you can get using it are just outstanding, and with overdrive you get good leads, just ask Jimi or Roger Hodgson!

I'm convinced that the Strats are also capoed at the second fret, except for the solo of course. That first chord is the first dead giveaway of many dead giveaways: X X 0 2 1 O (capo second fret.)
@mattiboo2 жыл бұрын
I considered this as well, but ultimately made the decision to play the lead guitar without the capo. The same notes can be played for the lead guitar part with or without the capo, however, I hear doubled B notes during the first few tag segments, such as at 0:20. This would have to be played without the capo. Likewise, when you consider that the lead guitar (including the solo) was likely played by John and George together in one take, switching between the capo seems unlikely.

@RingoStarr392 жыл бұрын
This song certainly didn't get any internal bouncing. The lead guitars were the last thing to be overdubbed after the vocals. Also, that technique wasn't used anywhere during the RS sessions that I'm aware of.
@mattiboo2 жыл бұрын
The authors of "Recording The Beatles" document at least one example of internal bouncing during 1965. On pages 390 and 394, the book claims that George Martin's handwritten notes from the Help! sessions indicate that internal bouncing was done on "That Means A Lot". His notes include the phrase "Track 1 + 2 mixed to Track 3". As for the recording of "Nowhere Man", "Recording The Beatles" claims that vocal double tracking was performed after the overdub of electric guitars (page 400) and that internal bouncing of the lead guitar parts was not out of the question. Now as to whether the parts were double tracked by George and bounced or recorded simultaneously is a matter of debate, and I cannot say with certainty which actually occurred. I will also include a passage from the book on the documentation of internal bouncing: "Interestingly, Mark Lewisohn's indispensable Recording Sessions fails to note even one occurrence of internal bouncing. The process was certainly used, but Mark confirms that during the course of his research, he didn't find any occurrences to it in the countless studio documents he sifted through while writing the book. This suggests that the practice was not documented clearly, if at all."
@RingoStarr392 жыл бұрын
@@mattiboo I have the RTB book too. Be careful always using it as gospel since it has its fair share of errors too. The lead guitar track has headphone leakage from the vocals on it, indicating it was overdubbed after the vocals. It's definitely George and John the whole way through.
@mattiboo2 жыл бұрын
I agree that no Beatles book should be taken as gospel! I believe the only claims they are making with regards to internal bouncing is that there is at least one primary source document claiming it was done in 1965 and that the process was not documented officially at all. With regards to vocal leakage, RTB claims that the vocals were only double tracked after the lead guitar, meaning that vocal leakage could be present due to the original vocal track. Also, I am curious, how are you accessing the isolated Track 2 lead guitar to verify that?
@RingoStarr392 жыл бұрын
@@mattiboo I have the lead guitar track extracted from the Rock Band stems to verify that. Although, you can hear the vocal leakage even in the original stereo mix. Listen to the left channel, which is where the lead guitar track is panned for most of the song, and you'll hear vocal leakage. Also, neither of the isolated vocal tracks has any leakage from the lead guitars at all, which would be the case if they were overdubbed before the vocals.
@mattiboo2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure the Rock Band stems of the guitar track can be a credible source on anything that subtle - they were remixed heavily from the original master tracks to suit the format of the game. However, I am inclined to take the lack of lead guitar leakage on the vocal track as ground truth as to the ordering of overdubs, I see no way in which some weird Rock Band mixing could have caused that. Following what I believe to be your logic, if the base track was recorded on track one, vocal overdub 1 on track three, and vocal overdub 2 on track four, there would only be one remaining track for the lead guitar, meaning it must have been recorded simultaneously. This argument relies on the assumption that RTB is accurate in reporting the track layout, which I have no reason to doubt. Based on this, I accept your argument that the lead guitar was recorded by both John and George and will update the description. Thanks for your addition to the channel!
