To understand the impact they had, you would have to study the history of the music scene before they arrived, as The Beatles were so different and seemed to get their image, sound and everything spot on to fire the imagination of youngsters in their era. I tried explaining all that to my children in order to try and help them realise the massive impact certain groups or artists had, as some of them exploded onto our screens and bewildered our parents back then. Maybe watch a couple of news reports of their arrival at airports in America to see the huge crowds waiting for them, and the screaming everywhere

they stopped Elvis and drafted him into the army, the payola scandals, Jerry Lee Lewis marrying his 14 year old cousin, arresting Chuck Berry on the Mann Act...we were left with the Twist and and tame boy teen idol singer like, yawn, Fabian...then the President was assassinated....the Beatles came along and rescued rock and roll and the quiet desperation of depression over the assassination. it was a moment like when Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz opened the door to her crashed house and the world was different and suddenly in color. [Even though this is black and white TV].

1964 we were visiting family friends, Ed Sullivan was on a tiny black & white TV & us kids were watching when the Beatles came on. All I heard was screaming. I didn't know who the Beatles were & I was confused why all the girls were screaming. I was only 7. I didn't know that night made history & changed pop/rock music forever. This had happened after months of grieving over the JFK assassination & gave some hope back to a young generation.

When I was 7 years old my Mum took me to the local cinema to see the Beatles movie A Hard Days Night. It's still worth a watch and the concert footage towards the end is brilliant, so much so that that the cinema audience was stamping and screaming just like the crowd in this video. I've been a Beatles fan ever since. Enjoyed your reaction!

This was a cover of a song made popular by the Isley Brothers... the 'twist' was a dance move popular in the early days of rock n' roll music. The Beatles made the decision in 1963 that they would not come to the USA without a #1 record... so it took about a year before their song "I want to hold your hand" hit #1 on the US charts in late '63... The Beatles then flew to America and experienced 'Beatlemania' there for the 1st time... their appearance on the 'Ed Sullivan' on national TV got the highest ratings ever for that show.

I've seen most of those performances of the Beatles in Feb of 1964. I was 8 Yrs old when my Grandfather called all of us into his room. He told all us..."Come quick here's some guys with long-hair that are singing, and they look like girls!!! We went in to watch and it seem as though we were on another planet. They were different and so was there music and things weren't the same after that. It was a good thing my Grandfather was watching the Ed Sullivan Show. This was 3 Mo after the assination of JFK.

I too, remember watching The Beatles on Sullivan at 7 about to be 8. This was their first trip to America. This is early Beatles, the Moptops. They grew so much musically in the next couple of years, beginning with Rubber Soul (my favorite). Experimenting in the studio, they were pioneers. At the time of this performance John and Ringo were 23, Paul was 21 and George was 20. George was about to turn 21 on 02/25/64. I share a birthday with George. 😀

I love the early Beatles. They had so many feel good songs. Songs that just made you want to dance and smile. "I Want to Hold Your Hand", She Loves You, All my Loving, Thank You Girl, Help. We Can Work it Out, A Hard Days Night, I Feel Fine, Eight Days a Week. The Rubber Soul Album. They were just fantastic. We never saw or heard anything like them. They were the forerunners for so much of what went on as rock and roll evolved. They wrote their own music, played their own instruments, their harmonies were fantastic, and they had the what was considered "long" hair back then. They were magical. The screaming was ridiculous. They couldn't hear themselves play. When playing live, Ringo would have to watch their mouths and body movement to know where they were in the song. It was nuts! Enjoy some of their early stuff!

The Isley Brothers sat at home watching this and realised changes were afoot. What did they have to compete against this new invasion? And with a song they themselves had popularized! The answer was sitting nearby, in the form of their young guitarist - Jimi Hendrix...

@@ashleyfletcher5044 It was kind of contagious! I went to see them in our little local cinema/theatre when I was just 12 years old and when all the girls started screaming my older sister tried (unsuccessfully) shushing me at first... 10 minutes in and she was screaming along with the best of them...! We were beside ourselves to see these gorgeous, strange, funny, creative, talented guys with their extraordinary, infectious music, irreverent attitude and working class accents, 'in the flesh'. The world had seen and heard nothing like them. Far from being a manufactured, marketing-hyped 'boy band' (as some people these days imagine) they paid their dues in years of continuous, once, twice and even three times-per-day gigs in a vast assortment of town halls, coffee bars and sleazy clubs, before they finally got their recording contract and went on to take over the world! [For all the details: see The Beatles Bible/ History] :-)

Hi Jayy! I love your enthusiasm for the Beatles. I am a big fan too. But mostly their later years, when they learned their potential as music makers (with the help of George Martin and the studio engineers). When this was shown on Ed Sullivan in 64, my Dad said, "They're just playing our (American) country music". My Dad referred to any modern American music, Country, Blues, Jazz, Rock and Roll, whatever, as "Country Music". Now, I think in many ways, he was right. In 1964, many American music artists were asked to come over to Europe and Great Britain to perform. There are some great KZbin videos of their performances. One that I think shows the contrast between the hysterical American teens on this video, and the British kids in Manchester England, is really interesting! Please watch Sister Rosetta Tharp sing "Didn't It Rain" live, the same year...1964. Here is an old lady, gospel singer, rocking out and amazing the young audience.

I attended one of the Beatles last concerts at Dodger Stadium. I was considered a "bubble gummer" in those days. It was a sea of hysteria and loads of fun. I could barely hear the Beatles singing but remember it to this day. They 'escaped' by dashing out in limousines hidden in a tent on the field. I still have the play list I kept to this day. Fabulous experience and era.

And their music from late 1965 till 1970 is the hard-core music, where they made things a little more complex, they lent a bit of sophistication to their songs and so forth. I would suggest some other fun early songs of theirs as well, like, "She Loves You," "Please Please Me," "I Want To Hold Your Hand" or even "A Hard Day's Night". Love you! Love your reactions! The Beatles' got their "woo" from Little Richard, although theirs is softer than his. He was a big influence on them. The song "Twist and Shout" is a cover of the 1962 Isley Brothers' hit. They always had to perform it last because it would trash John Lennon's voice.

Actually they opened a lot of their concerts with Twist & Shout. They didn't always end their shows with it. The thing is they saved Twist & Shout for their last song of their "Please Please Me" recording session because they were recording the whole album in one day wih three sessions. John was nursing a bad cold on that day, and that is the only reason why they saved Twist & Shout for the last track they would record because they jknew that they couldn't do more than one take or anything after that with his sore throat.

As someone who was sitting in front of our tv at the age of 15, the Beatles were a breath of fresh air on the music scene. President Kennedy had been assassinated a few months before they came to America and they helped to bring us out of a period of national mourning. They wrote most of their songs, played their own instruments, sang well together and were cute as hell with their moptop haircuts and matching suits. I still have all of their albums.

Some Little Richard influence going on there. Ed Sullivan hosted a Sunday night variety show and featured The Beatles 3 consecutive Sundays in 1964. I can't tell you how exciting it was. Even our parents liked them in those early days. This was just after the Nov 1963 assassination of President John F Kennedy when everybody needed something happy to think about and that something was The Beatles. As I'm thinking back on this though, I wonder if this wasn't also part of their cover up.

Those girls were going crazy with joy...lol. Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones said the only times when he was truly scared for his life was when they were mobbed by hysterical young girls...:o)

This is how good they were without monitors, LIVE and THEY created the long hair style you still see today. They had shock value back then and talent with it. Boy did they piss off our parents with the noisy music and long hair. and the girls went out of their minds, but make no mistake , the boys really dug the sound, the guitars and drums, and the look. today it may seem tame, but back then, outrageous.

The Beatles were actually filmed for this Ed Sullivan show in October of 1963. It aired in 9 February 1964. They appeared two more times after 73,000,000 people saw them in the first appearance.

That's not true. The Ed Sullivan Show appearances were February 9th, 16th, and 23rd 1964. This performance was from a video taped appearance of The Ed Sullivan Show done in the afternoon of February 9th in front of a live audience. It was saved for the 23rd after The Beatles left for England.
