The general rule is that whoever wrote the song sang it. There are exceptions (particularly for Ringo's songs), but that's a good way to view it.

This version is one of three official versions sanctioned by the Beatles. It is a perfectly fine choice. The three official versions are as follows: 1) The version released in 1968 on the album entitled “The Beatles,” informally known as “The White Album.” It featured all four Beatles on it, with George singing and their friend Eric Clapton playing lead guitar. 2) The demo version, featuring just George’s vocal as he plays an acoustic guitar. This was recorded in 1968 and released officially in 1996 on “Beatles Anthology, Volume 3.” This was released during George’s lifetime. He officially gave it the okay for release. He died in 2001. 3) The version in your post was released about ten or fifteen years ago as an official Beatles release, on the Cirque d’Soleil soundtrack for their Beatles ballet “Love.” The orchestrations are by the man who produced every Beatles album made in the 1960s except “Let It Be,” George Martin. The voice is George’s, from his 1968 demo, and so is the guitar. Before he died, George contacted Cirque d’Soleil, because he wanted the “Love” project to happen. Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison were all at the “Love” premiere. You’ve posted a very well-loved version of the song. It is an official version, supervised and sanctioned by Paul, Ringo and the Beatles producer George Martin. Thank you for posting it.

It’s our George singing. George wrote some ripper songs on their later albums. “Something” is one of his very best. The loose rule within The Beatles was; who wrote, it sang it. Same with John/Paul. It was only in the really early days they wrote 50/50 together. Ringo wrote two Beatles songs “Octopuses Garden” & “Don't Pass Me By“ Have a great day Jay! ✌️🇦🇺😊

JayveeTV I hate to disagree but the version does matter. In this version an acoustic guitar or violin section plays the lead. In the originals, an electric guitar with slide is used an the guitar does “weep”. It adds so much. You have to hear Eric Clapton on the slide. It has always been said of Clapton that he makes the guitar cry.

ignore everyone saying that this isn't the "original" version, imo both versions are incredible you cant go wrong with either. This is a demo version with just George on guitar, they added the strings/orchestra in the 2000s, the album version is a lot heavier and more produced. Like I said both are incredible songs, worth checking them both out.

jay is giving an honest reaction to what he’s hearing. so pls have a little more respect for his opinion. There is no right or wrong version. To me a demo is very raw (ie original) and gets fleshed out and metamorphosis occurs the more it is played live or in studio. Chill pls. If you don’t like what he’s doing go and create your own videos or suggest a link to what you’re suggesting. There’s plenty of room for comparison and NO ROOM for swearing and put downs.

Gorgeous song. One of MANY best. As you say, there are not many "bad" Beatles songs. Or more exactly, they have so many really good songs that it's difficult to comprehend. I don't think there's any other group that had so many exceptional songs under one group. And I like the fact that they never stood still. They kept evolving, morphing, exploring. They were true to their musical feel (and beyond in their personal careers too). They drew from each one (more from John and Paul, but Ringo and George also wrote songs that were exceptional, like this one). Something to treasure.

George sang on This Song, Here Comes The Sun, and Something and Norwegian Wood. If you can check out those songs. They are so beautiful. George also bought spirituality to the Group when they went to India in a place called Bangalore where they learned about meditation, yoga, and it was good for John since he was purging himself of Drugs & Alcohol. He also learned how to play The Sitar (An Indian Guitar) under the tutelage of Ravi Shankar (Nora Jones Father).

Last one for me tonight....off to bed. Such a beautiful song. George was super talented. Check out his album All Things Must Pass. Very spiritual and lovely, deep songs.

Also done beautifully by the traveling Wilburys, which george was a band member, after george's death, George's son in the video was playing and Prince joined to pay tribute to the song written and sung by George 💔

This is George Harrison's original accoustic demo for the song. The strings were added many years later by George Martin for the Cirque de Soleil show LOVE. This is last music Martin ever arranged for a Beatles track. It is a lovely contrast to the famous White Album version featuring Eric Clapton. Both versions are great and so different.

From what i've read, George wrote this song based of a few random words that he found in a random book. Pretty good for only starting with the words "gently weeps. "

After you hear the real album version... IF you like Prince (I worship him); you HAVE TO SEE video of some greats in the music business (TWO of them are dead now - Tom Petty and of course, Prince) came together for a tribute concert to George Harrison and played some of his tunes. George's son is playing on stage too. BUT my point is Prince has this INCREDIBLE guitar solo in that performance and showman antics too. Please - IF you like the real version of this song, you will freaking love the tribute one found on here. Just search this: Prince, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne and others -- "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"

As already commented this is not the original released version by the Beatles. This is Georges's demo with orchestration added about 40 years later.

Two songs made me pick up a guitar and made me want to play it, this is one, the other song was Bell Bottem Blues by Eric Clapton. I suggest you check that out as well.

This version was remixed using the George demo which has the 2 extra 'verses' a string section. For a real loving interpretation of the song, try the ' Concert For George' footage with a mega allstar band & Eric Clapton closing his eyes & playing from his heart. If only for curiosity check it out !
