The Beauty of the Law - Bishop Barron’s Sunday Sermon

Friends, the more we revere something, the more we surround it with laws. The most important thing in our lives is to be in harmony with God, and so we follow his divine law. We must, with prudence and wisdom, distinguish between the commandments of God that structure us, and fussy human traditions that distract from our relationship with him.

PRAYER TO THE SACRED HEAD of Our Blessed Lord, as the Seat of Divine Wisdom O Wisdom of the Sacred Head guide me in all my ways. O Love of The Sacred Heart, consume me with Thy fire. O Seat of Divine Wisdom, and guiding Power, which governs all the motions and love of the Sacred Heart, may all minds know Thee all hearts love Thee and all tongues praise Thee, now and for evermore. O WILL, which was always in meek subjection to Thy Heavenly Father’s, control me in all things, as Thou didst govern all the affections and motions of the Sacred Heart of the God made Man. Glory Be… O UNDERSTANDING, which knows all things, ever guide me with Thy Light. Glory Be… O MEMORY, in which past, present and future are at once reflected, which is ever mindful of me and always seems studying some new means of giving fresh favours, force me to love Thee more and more. Thank you Bishop Barron! Please pray for our country, South Africa. Our law system is more or less in chaos, as it reflects our society, rife with corruption and a lack of ethics. The law and the society it governs are constantly playing in on each other. Here, our law is constantly under threat, fortunately, the Constitutional Court is still standing, but is being subjected to erosion by governing agencies. Please pray for us in South Africa. For all the poor, and the unemployed youth.

@@smoker420la The bible clearly states that death is the penalty for sin. This is only logical given the Ontology Of The JudeoChristian God, Whom is identified as life itself, ergo what explicit resultant occurs through deviation from life- decay and eventual death. Now the genesis narrative, whether taken literally or figuratively, irrespectively accomplishes the conveyance Of this facticity- humanity, represented by the progenitor figures of Adam and Eve, sinned, and consequently degeneration and death entered into them, and indeed all of creation, for how could imperfect beings, still then reside in a perfect world. A common misconception, perhaps in the contemporary sense, derived most clearly from graeco-philosophical thought, particularly platonic- is to conceptualise the physical and spiritual realities as two staunchly independent, and functionally isolated realms of matter, when in fact the original Hebrew understanding was always that of deep, and inextricable interwoven nature. Consequently, these two spheres of reality are able to interact (as with the human soul-neurobiological matter interface), and to confer effects upon one another. This is true for both the positive, and negative qualities of each. For instance mental faculties such as knowledge, wisdom, creativity, piety etc, and the contingent sinful context also. Think of it as a spiritual genetic analogue; in like manner to inheritance of select physical traits from one’s biological parents, humans- being such spiritual-physical integrated hybrids, also ‘inherit’ certain spiritual properties, one of which is the fallen state, or the ‘original sin’ - whether committed by a literal Adam and Eve, or simply the first humans sufficiently advanced in psychology, to be morally culpable, who then reproduced to pass on such a fallen disposition, and hence the chain reaction of human progenitive transmission, conferred the death penalty to all humans, regardless of age or spatiotemporal localisation, through precisely this mechanic of shared inheritance, of the sinful-spiritual property or character. For this reason, a God whom is Uncreated, and thus Immutable and Limitless Justice (due to preceding both spatial and temporal reality confines, and so any attributional parameterisation), would logically be wholly justified in instantaneously eradicating any, even infinitesimal Created Substrate, that harboured such Reality-Ontological Violation, which is to say- sin. It is truly therefore, only a testament to this same God’s simultaneous Characterisation as Omnibenevolent, that both creation remains, and He additionally persisted,- in spite of our repeated wickedness, and unrelenting arrogance, in providing a totally free and so Ineffably gratuitous- redemptive path, to restore the fallen state of creation, that naught other than we caused, and fervently maintain. That in short, is why this Unchangingly consistent God can ‘kill babies’ ~ they are not immortal, as nothing in this reality is, and so pass the definitive ontological litmus test for sinful corruption, thus warranting Just death. It is only true Divine Omni-Levelled Beneficence, as to why anything subsequently still remains, and why in the therefore Necessary Deific-Messiah, there is any hope, for any construct of creation. Unformable-Triune YHWH bless you sincerely, and always friend. 😊

As a cradle Catholic (I'm 69 yrs old) some have said to me that they don't want to go back to the days (pre-Vatican II) when the Church was a bunch of rules and regulations (fasting, abstinence, confession, devotion, prayer, etc.). I suppose some think that it's too difficult to evangelize people if they are faced with such rules (laws) adopted by the Church. Past laws were never meant to be prohibitive but rather, to lead people spirituality to a reverent relationship with Jesus Christ. Only today, people are more concerned with their comfort zone than they are with true devotion.

“The more we reverence something, the more we surround it with laws.” It’s an indictment on us regarding the dignity of human life. Our laws allow for the legal, intentional killing of innocent human beings by dismemberment. Therefore, we don’t reverence human life.

The law had a purpose, to separate God’s people from their pagan neighbors. It protected them from foreign influence and kept them holly. And their many descent into another gods adoration shows us just how much appropriate were these laws. But the world changed, the Word became flash and changed history and the law became obsolete, it had already fulfilled in Jesus it’s purpose and with us the Lam left the laws that were important to us, to guide and protect us in OUR days. As we can see, reform is something good, something that God taught us.

Beautifully said Bishop Barron. When you speak of what we reverence, I thought of marriage. I tend to be one of those "don't tread on me" types. I do believe it goes against God's moral law to coerce someone to live the way you think is best. Respecting our natural rights is so crucial, and a principle most people do not understand. I came from a religious background that sought to micromanage me- no coffee or alcohol, don't shop or have recreation on Sunday, fulfill every petty requirement given by church leaders without complaint. My spirit definitely rebelled against such strictures. But I see how in general society, we have lost the respect for the true law and that leads to division and chaos. Finding the proper balance between adherence to God's true law and respecting people's agency is no easy task, but one that we should seek to accomplish. Thank you.

What pleases God is a contrite heart . I am always reminded of the passage on " Religious hypocrisy" in the Book of Isaiah ( I think chapter 2) . God says to take away from Him all the solemnities and festivals. He can't stand no more the smoke of their sacrifices . "Instead" He says " present yourself to me. Come let's talk this over " . Jesus was never against liturgical reverence or tradition ( He was Jew and fully observant of Mosaic law) , what He had an issue with, was the inconsistency of showing a , way too otward reverence , while neglecting what should be at the core of that devotion : justice, love, honesty, mercy, integrity .... You can see how nowadays people shout about " returning to tradition" , while trampling upon love, charity and mutual respect . What we do outside ought to be an expression of something which has its origin within ourselves . Lex orandi , Lex credendi right? But of what avail is to us to be the most reverent Mass goer , If that attitude is tainted with pride and self righteousness ? Better is a peasant who humbly worship and serve God in obedience .

This was very insightful as a warning to the dangers of becoming too dependent on a legal code to ensure reverence and adherence to the spirit of God's will and intentions for our lives and God's liturgies. On the other hand, I feel too little time is spent by those in high positions talking about the dangers of the antithesis to it and the fruit that antithesis has produced. Clown masses, irreverent liturgies, and unbelieving clergy have helped induce a crisis in the Church that a stricter adherence would, arguably, have not produced.

Thank You Bishop Barron. The Father gave us laws out of love; do we really love for one another enough to share his purpose here on earth or are we attempting to control one another , gain compliance and conformity? and I think you are correct about ' Too Many Lawyers' ... Have a Great Week!

It is amazing to me how your sermons educate and inform. I have struggled with the belief vs the ceremony of the laws of the church. With "control" vs "teaching/informing" . Your metaphors have helped to understand and to distinguish the true vs the oppressive control. I wish more people could hear you. Grateful

The Catechism cuts to the heart of this matter. It brought me to a better understanding after seeing the legalism in the Church that was pronounced in the '60s. For all of those who have fallen away, I beg you to read it with an open mind. God Bless, Your Excellency.

Hi Bishop Barron I loved this homily. Can you preach more often about the beauty of God's law and about Divine Mercy? I think that those are two areas where you are more gifted than even other areas where you are gifted. I like your analogies and your golf story and not just because I am a golfer too it really captured the essence of why doing morally wrong actions is inherently wrong not just breaking an arbitrary rule. I thought it was very memorable and relatable. This homily was a home run.

Good stuff, thanks. The mention of lawyers brought to my mind the movie "Ghandi" which I just watched with a friend this week. It was great to learn that Ghandi was a lawyer because I feel it is where lawyers need to strive rather than wealth and other fruitless attainments.

Amén Bishop Barron. May God Bless You for delivering such a beautiful Homily. I agree. It is unfortunate that some church traditions have changed overtime; yet more so when the pandemic started. But I feel blessed for All the Pope Francis is doing during these challenging times. Blessings to Our Pope, Bishops, and all Clergy doing their best to keep church traditions and doctrine genuine. My heart and prayers go out to even the smallest parishes throughout the world experience dire need for vocations. Amén 🙏🏻

The example of law surrounding a museum is interesting. Because in some of these famous museums lie items which have been stolen, took with contempt from others to whom they haven't shown any respect (moral laws). God's laws are beautiful and God creates us by inserting in our intelligible nature some laws.

I stumbled across this today, Bishop Barron, and this is a very important sermon from your side. You are touching a very big subject very eloquently. The idea of human tradition and how it interferes with the law of the Almighty. Some words like "sola scriptura" inevitably jump to mind when we touch this subject. Against this background, I am pleasantly surprised to hear this insight and wisdom from you. May the dear Lord bless you as you ponder this topic, as I have no doubt that you will. In finishing off, two more item to bring to the attention here, and given that you are a well educated person, I have no doubt that you will see what I mean: (2). Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. (4). 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
