The BeeGees have been around for so long everyone always knew they were brothers. It never occurred to me to tell anybody. The funny part is that Barry, the oldest, and their youngest brother Andy looked the most alike but it was Maurice and Robin who were twins. It's so sad that Barry is the only one left. 😔

This was pre-disco Bee Gees. Other songs of this era: Holiday, New York Mining Disaster 1941, Massachusetts, To Love Somebody, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, I've Gotta Get a Message To You, Lonely Days, Run To Me, Words. Impossible to pick a favorite, but in my mind, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart sticks out. I love them all.

yes the Bee Gee stands for Brothers Gibb
@atticussampson776
@atticussampson776 4 жыл бұрын
It evolved to that, but did not originate as such. Though it is widely believed that the Bee Gees first got their name from being the Brothers Gibb, this meaning did not come until a few years after their founding. When the brothers moved to Australia in 1958, they began playing on the radio with friends Bill Goode and Bill Gates. The groups name was originally The BG’s - contrived from the common initials between Barry Gibb, Bill Goode, and Bill Gates. The name then evolved from The BG’s to the Bee Gees which eventually came to mean the Brothers Gibb!

@@atticussampson776 Bill Goode was a speedway promoter who gave them their first break singing during intervals at a local speedway track in Redcliffe near Brisbane Australia in 1960 and Bill Gates was a radio DJ who gave them their first airplay on radio. It was Bill Gates who came up with the name BGs as you say Atticus from their common initials later changing to Bee Gees. The twins were 10 years old and Barry 13 or 14.

Andy was never a part of the Bee Gees. Yes, he was their brother, but Andy was just a baby when the 3 older brothers formed the act, The Bee Gees. Andy, did however get help from his older siblings when he got into the music industry as a solo artist. They helped him out with back up vocals, and song writing.

India this song was to be interpreted by whoever listened to it. Basically however you want it to mean then that is what it means to you. It idnt have an actual meaning. If it i then Robin Gibb didnt tell anyone But heres what his son said about it. Robin Gibb's son played this song just after his father died from kidney failure on May 20, 2012. Robin-John Gibb told The Sun: "When he passed away we went out, they took the equipment away and we came back in. I picked up my phone and found 'I Started A Joke' on KZbin and played it. I put the phone on his chest and that was the first time I broke down. I knew that song and its lyrics were perfect for that moment. That song will always have new meaning to me now.

The Bee Gees are probably my favorite singers of all time. They were not only incredible singers, but they wrote some of the most profound and beautiful music of the 20th Century. MEGA talented. (By the way...it doesn't make you illiterate because you didn't know how to pronounce their name. The only reason WE did is because we heard it constantly on the radio and TV. Don't be so hard on yourself, child.) They also had a younger brother, Andy (who was practically a carbon copy of Barry, and sounded like him, too), who died young, due to drugs. Now, all of them are gone, except for Barry. He still does some touring, I think, and produces music. I'm including a link, here, that you might enjoy seeing. You don't have to react to it; it's just a REALLY old video of them in 1960. Barry looks to be about 13 or 14, and the twins about 9-10. Just children. The one you reacted to, here, would be done 8 years later. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3-qpH2QoduZqNE

They wrote all thier own songs but none of them could read music! lol! Barry has written and performed for other artists like Barbara Streisand, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Samantha Sang, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, Frankie Vallee, Celine Dion to name a few. In this video Barry is 22, and the twins are 19.

I always took the song to be, that he fell in love with a woman who was playing around behind his back...and everyone but him knew about it. Then when he did find out...he realized people had been laughing at him all along... no one was a true friend and it killed him inside to realize that. His whole world fell in. @@StormyPeak I very much doubt that the song involves a woman at all. The song is not about something that was done to him, it is about something he caused. In the first stanza, he says: "I started a joke, which started the whole world crying." He is taking responsibility for something he said or did, which had negative consequences for others. Do you agree so far? "But I didn't see that the joke was on me." It is still his joke, he didn't foresee the consequences, that his joke would hurt so many people. "I started to cry, which started the whole world laughing." He is confused and hurt that his joke was not received the way he thought it would be. The joke is now on him. "I looked at the sky, rubbing my hands over my eyes. And I fell out of bed, hurting my head, from things that I said." He struggled to understand the hurt that he had caused, that it was his fault. "I finally died, which started the whole world living." He reaches understanding that what he said or did was wrong. He has accepted that he must change. And life starts again.

Something most people don't know is that, being from England, their first recording was played on radios over there, but not often enough for people to hear it. So they borrowed money from family and friends and bought as many of their own records so it would get higher on the charts. It worked. The radio stations played their song and it jumped up the charts. I am sorry I don't know the song. I got this from an old radio show host Kasey Kasim, many years ago.

Lyrically, the song is about a man who says something very unkind and offensive even though it was intended to be a joke, making the world cry. Upset, the man begins to cry too, but he is laughed at, causing him to feel deep guilt and shame for his actions. The man’s remorse is remembered after his death, inspiring the world to learn from his mistake and achieve love and unity instead of seeking to hurt others.

Technically they weren't born in England, they were born on the Isle of Man, which is not part of England or the UK for that matter. It's a bit complicated I know but the IoM is a British Crown Dependency and has its own parliament and government. They were born to an English couple from Manchester and spent time in that city before their family emigrated to Australia. Andy, their brother, was English born. I guess you can call them British.

Robin Gibb was a survivor of a very horrific train crash, which traumatized him so much that he got a very distinct sob and quiver in his voice, which is VERY evident in this song and others he sang lead on. As for him and Maurice being twins. Look at this picture, which shows the both of them throughout the years. i.pinimg.com/originals/55/4b/0c/554b0c920e2667019520ffe8e707f229.png Yes, their hairstyles differ but they DO have the same facial features.

Yes, Hither Green accident 1967. Robin and his girlfriend were only slightly injured, but they were told that if they'd be just a few seats further forward, they'd have been decapitated. 49 people died in that accident, mainly due to a broken rail.

Have you heard Dione Warwick - All The Love In The World? Written by 2 of the Bee Gees and one of them is signing in the background too. Beautiful song. Heartbreaker, another Dione Warwick great.

Yes they're brothers. The Gibbs and they had a younger brother who had a solo career, but sadly took his own life before 30, I think. Andy Gibb. This is the best song to showcase Robin's voice! I always thought of a man who was bullied and never understood the world around him. Used to make me cry. They all had amazing voices and it's sad to think only Barry is left. Enjoy your channel. Peace from Alberta Canada!

I had to laugh out loud when you said you never told me they were brothers. Too funny. Bee Gees - Brothers Gibb. This song is particularly personal to Robin as you can imagine. Robin and Maurice were fraternal twins who sadly died too young. They had another younger brother, Andy Gibb, who died in the early 1980's at just 30 years old :( Some favorites of mine: Lonely Days, Tragedy, You Should be Dancing, and one of their last collaborations - This is just where I came in. All the best.

I remember reading somewhere when I was young at 13 when the song came out that it was about somebody who said or did something wrong towards a lot of people. Resulting in them hating him or being mad at him. Bee Gees songs are just as good today as they were yesterday

Actually I have always felt it was about the alienation that so many of us feel when we are cast out of the group.
