Dani, thank you for reacting to "I Started a Joke". Robin did many of the leads or shared leads with Barry from the late 60's to the early 70's before the disco era of the mid '70's.This actually became Robin's signature song and he received standing ovations every time he performed it at their live concerts. Robin actually requested that it be played at his funeral in 2012. I could go on and on about his beautiful voice but the only way you'll appreciate it is by reacting to more of his wonderful leads. I could lists dozens of his early leads (many of them major hits) but I'll suggest just one right now. Please react to "I Can't See Nobody" using their 1974 Melbourne concert. I promise you that you won't be disappointed! A truly remarkable performance by a truly remarkable man!

Robin essentially wrote all of the songs that they performed and worked the arrangements to the bone. He was such a perfectionist that it caused strife between him and Barry over the years. Barry was the most talented and beautiful of the brothers outwardly, while Robin was their soul and Maurice was their glue held all of their empathy. As a little boy I live next door to them on the beach in Miami and at 6 years old after a piano lesson, I wandered into Barry's living room and started playing his baby grand piano. Instead of throwing me out the door or calling the police, they entertained me and asked me to play until my mother arrived. Very sweet guys and they told that story for many years at parties my mother and father partook in at their house, when I was a boy. Sadly, I lost touch with them in the very early 1980s when I was 10 or 11 years old. I'll always love and remember that time. I was absolutely blessed. I recommend To Love Somebody. Early Bee-Gee's era, beautiful stuff.

His voice is described as an ethereal Vibrato. Robin did go through some traumatic events in his young life. Barry & Robin described their nasal sound as coming from their British background with the same sound coming from the Liverpool & Manchester area where they were raised very early on. I think the thing that makes this song is how vulnerable Robin's voice makes it, which seems to shine through in a lot of Bee Gees songs (all of the brothers have great voices).

Dani Atkinson - This was Robin's song and primarily written by him. He was an introvert, a deep thinker and his brothers said he was a "genius" with amazing self taught knowledge. My interpretation is that when he was young he was very shy, small, artistic and was likely teased a lot (not to mention his buck teeth). As a result Barry said he was a joker and prankster but had a dark side. He would make people laugh to hide his hurt. Be funny so they think you're not hurting. He said himself he felt he was "the black sheep" of the family. He had a very sharp wit that sometimes got him into trouble and people often misunderstood him because he was so eccentric. Just from his personality and his brother's comments, that is what I got out of the song, his favorite.

The Bee Gees wrote all of their songs, plus some that were song by other artists. Most people don't realize that they wrote the song that was voted one of the greatest country male/female duets: "Islands in the Stream" by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. So they were not only a great singing trio, but also great song writers. I'm glad you did Robin's "I Started a Joke". It is my all time favorite Bee Gee song. There's a lot of symbolism in the song, left open to interpretation. What does "I finally died" mean? I see it as more figurative than literal. But aside from the depth of meaning in the lyrics, I just love the music itself. And Robin's voice is mesmerizing. Thanks Dani. 😊💕

This is from 1968. This is is my favorite era of their music. Their 70s disco songs are fantastic, but their earlier recordings are fantastic. My favorite Bee Gees song is To Love Somebody. Robin and Maurice passed away, and their younger brother Andy who became popular in the mid to late 70s also passed away. Andy was considerably younger than the other brothers. Barry is the oldest and is the only remaining brother. What a very talented family.

I was watching an old interview with Barry Gibb and he talked about how circa 1975, for the better of the group from a marketing point of view, Robin realized that Barry's high-pitched falsetto was really making them stand out and selling their music Robin selflessly gave up singing any leads and gave them all to Barry. He knew they'd discovered a winning formula with Barry's trademark high voice and didn't want to mess with that. That's why you have to go back to the late 60's/early 70's to find songs that Robin sings lead on. Here's the interview for anyone interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/naHTZIyHaKdjpJI

Dani, I'm glad you got to react to an early Bee Gees song. While they had a different music style and sound compared to their latter disco years, they wrote and sang many excellent songs during that time period. While Barry exclusively sang lead on their disco era songs, Robin sang lead on many of their songs from the early BeeGees years. "I Started A Joke" was one of them. This song really showcases Robin's excellent singing. My favorite early BeeGees songs that I would like to see you do reaction videos for are "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" and "I've Got To Get A Message To You".

Robin wasn't afraid of emotion and also he liked sad songs because it matched his high voice with the vibrato, this is the first Bee Gee song I remember being played on the radio as a kid, I think it stuck in my head because of his voice, you should play Gotta Get a Message to You, where Robin and Barry switch leads, it's also not a really happy song starts out The preacher talked with me and he smiled, said come and walk with me come and walk one more mile, which tells you immediately that he's going to the electric chair

This song sounded fine on an AM radio with a little speaker amid daily life and not nearly as dark as you perceived it hearing it in a vacuum with headphones. Honestly I never felt it was depressing but more reflective and a bit sardonic with a glorious melody and arrangement. Whatever the public LOVED it. Robin wrote that song. The Bee Gees wrote almost all of their own songs. They were very creative songwriters.

They wrote nearly all their songs themselves. There might be around 40 cover songs that they did. The 3 best in my opinion is Turn Around Look At me from 1966, Oh Darling (Beatles song, Robin Lead) from 1978 Sgt pepper movie, bad movie great song and Will You still Love Me Tomorrow from the 1995 Carol King tribute album. If you want to listen to Robin on lead there is many songs but you could try Love Me from 1976, Country Lanes from 1975 or Ellan Vannin which comes both in a Bee Gees Version (Robin Lead) and Robin solo with a Choir.

I listened to this song when I was young because I was the outcast in my family of 4. I didn't understand them anymore than they understood me. That line, "I finally died which started the whole world living" gets me because I moved myself away from my family of origin and it was like they didn't even miss me...they just went on living. My idea of what family is was totally different from what they thought so the joke was indeed on me. Thanks for your reaction, Dani. Even though this song is distressing, I find for myself that it gives me strength....just because Robin sang it and he knew about my life. Take care and be well. Peace.

I've watched about six different people listening to this song for the first time & they spend all their time trying to figure out what it means. I've watched about ten videos of Too Much Heaven & thankfully the people all talk about how amazing they harmonized so well & how Barry's Falsetto was perfect. Why, in the six videos of this song, does nobody mention what a tremendous Vibrato Robin's voice had? This girl says it has a nasal tone - no, it's called Vibrato. Other than Judy Garland, I don't think I've heard another Vibrato voice that comes close to Robin's. He was gifted. Just as nobody could touch Barry's Falsetto back in the day, & I love how Maurice tied it altogether to a beautiful harmony. There are many bands that harmonize well, but I think the Bee Gees & Queen were two of the greatest.

Dani, you dissect songs and voices soooo well. I started a joke and all Bee Gees songs are indeed written by them. When you have a chance in your busy schedule please listen to Nights on Broadway as it’s the first song which has them exploring getting into their falsettos. Also Wish you were here is a beautiful tear jerker written and sung to their younger brother Andy. It’s so emotional and their 3 piece harmony so gorgeous.
