The Bee Gee's were always polite gentlemen. Even from a young age, they knew how to carry themselves. They worked tirelessly and earned every single accolade they received. I love their music and am deeply saddened by the loss of Maurice and Robin. Barry is in his late 70s now and he is still such a wonderful man. xoxo

He was just an irritating host. You could tell that Barry was trying to keep calm, but Clive Anderson was just asking really dumb questions. Clive Anderson was a comedian who had a talk show in the UK and I guess he was just interested in getting laughs and not on really listening to their answers. By this time the brothers were just very tired of being made fun of. They were constantly made fun of by comedians for the disco years. How they dressed, their hair, their voices and their music. Barry did very well trying to keep calm and just walked out. They had a reputation for being really nice guys. It makes me angry with all the things they went through. I don’t think any artists have been made fun of like them.

Barry and Robin saw the interview as a 'set-up' where Clive was aiming to cause a rift between them. Clive seemed to be buttering up Robin a bit, when he mentioned Robin's success when he went solo with 'Saved by Bell'. When Barry said they ( he and Maurice) also had a song that did well on the charts 'Dont forget to Remember me'. Clive responded by saying that he already forgot that song. Remember that they had suffered through the disco backlash and here Clive is constantly making fun of their music during that period even comparing them to Mickey mouse and saying he at first thought they were sisters, but they laughed it off. I support them walking off as I don't see the humour in most of Clive 's comments and I think he was being deliberate in showing preference for Robin's songs over Barry's songs that he did in falsetto.

I agree. When I first watched this years ago, I thought Barry overreacted. Then I watched it again. There's like 10 insults in there! The *hit writers was the worst because their songs are like their babies. At that point of their career they were finally being treated with respect so I'm sure they weren't expecting to be insulted again. The saddest part is all the years of insults took all the joy out of Robin.

@@MM-rd4wm what I couldn't believe was that he meant 's...hit' writers as someone pointed out in the comments. You know I thought he meant that they made a hit and not hits. They should have walked off when he said that. That was not funny but disrespectful

Well I don't blame Barry for walking off Clive was rude and he was making me mad with his insults...yes I could tell Barry didn't want to do the interview from the start because they were familiar with Clive...however it was when Clive called them a tosser that really struck a nerve with Barry...tosser in British is slang for stupid or unpleasant person... in the UK,Australia, and others it's slang for a male who masturbates...so totally understandable why Barry walked off...Robin new right away why Barry was leaving however Mo didn't have a clue which was funny...as Barry got up to leave he said, to Clive,"you sir are a f***ing tosser"! Good for you Barry...I love the Bee Gees and I'm offended by any one making fun of them,it's so disrespectful...it's 2023 and people are still listening to the brothers Gibb...

I've watched a gazzillion Bee Gee interviews and they are always light hearted and pleasant. There are some interviews where they get a little defensive about the disco era, but even then they lighten it up with humor. Clive just kept up with the insults and it must have been a bad day for Barry - you could see it from the start. I think in particular insulting the falsetto was probably too much for him that day. Whatever was going on Robin seemed to be in sync with Barry. Clive looked stunned when they walked off - I think he thought it was a joke at first - idk. This is a classic one though - thanks for reacting to it.

Robin went thru a bitter divorce in1980 and was separated from his 2 oldest kids for a few years. He said it "nearly drove him mad" and he was never as happy go lucky as he was before that. But he always had his razor sharp sense of humour, which you'll see when you do MTV Wheel of Death, Gotcha and the Funny Moments 1,2 and 3.

Just seconds into the interview, the presenter compared the group's high falsetto to Mickey Mouse and also said the Bee Gees were "hit writers" with "one letter shy".The big turning point came, however, when he said the band will "always be Les Tossers to me” and Barry Gibb's face began to "We're getting on like a storm, aren't we Clive", Barry says sarcastically, adding: "In fact I might just leave."The interview has become infamous as one of the most awkward encounters in UK TV history. Barry Gibb spoke of the aftermath of the interview in 2016, saying he was pained by criticism of the Bee Gees. “Yes, I found the jokes hurtful,” he told The Sun. “Interviews were often based on the negative, never based on the positive. And that’s one of the reasons we walked off Clive Anderson."“It was just a barrage of inferred insults,” says Barry. “And we were fans of Clive Anderson so that made me sad. I just snapped.” Clive Anderson has had time to reflect on the interview and has since admitted he was wrong in his remarks. "I think I got the pitch of that wrong," he told the Express earlier this year, "[it] went from the best to the worst in a few minutes." I LOVE their reaction! Other stars like Barbra Streisand would have slapped him in the face!

Clive used just one too many mean barbs. Barry seemed guarded from the start maybe due to Clive's reputation for being a bit of a jerk with his humor. It seems he was trying to pit one brother against the other. He made fun of the falsetto era and they were fed up with being mocked for that..."Hard to follow that high pitch. My dog loves it". He was trying to use them as his straight man. The "tosser" remark didn't go over well. Mo as always tried to reduce the tension with humor "Well I'd love to stay but I don't do impressions" (of his brothers). As Robin left he said "It was a set up". Robin did change. Barry said he was a dichotomy. He could be the funniest man you could ever know or the saddest man you could ever know. He was a very intelligent, deep thinker and admitted he was overly sensitive and moody. He got a lot of cruel press when young both for his looks, because he wasn't the typical rock star matinee idol, and also because he temporarily quit the group although Barry threatened to quit the group at the same time. His train wreck in 1968 also left him with terrible PTSD that was never treated and Barry said it changed him. His divorce (which he didn't want) and separation from his young children Spencer and Melissa (who doted on her dad) as Janet mentioned hit him hard. I think he was also frustrated to usually be designated as second fiddle. After he died Barry said "I should have let Robin sing more. Nobody could sing like him". I don't know if you saw the link I sent of Robin explaining the history of Bristol to Leo Sayer. He would have been a great history teacher. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKnQpqt4h5ajmMU

There was another interview a few years earlier I think where the interview ticked off Robin and he got up and started pulling the microphone off because the interviewer said something about the Bee Gee being slagged off. He said if this is the type of interview its going to be then I don't want to do it. He ended up staying but he was not happy with that guy.

There is some British humor going on that is insulting...I know he called them "tossers" which means stupid and unpleasant, and Barry didn't like that. And the guy wouldn't stop talking over them, and making fun of their responses. Then the dog comment...and Barry starts fidgeting...and one more snide comment and Barry is out of there. I think he was feeling some kinda way about something Robin said or was said to Robin. Notice Robin was totally tuned into Barry, and sweet Maurice is left behind to have the last laugh when he said, "I'd love to, but I don't do impressions." I thought Robin and Barry were having some issue between them...Robin sat in that first chair where Barry usually sits.

The horrible host first called their hits " short a letter" in other words $hits. Then they were sisters not brothers ( Robin did not like that comment.)Then dog liked it not him. Then tossers. Just too many insults disguised as jokes. Sir Barry rightly decided to end it.

This is always fascinating to see the body language of Barry. (Note how Maurice is still chilled at the end.) I don't think a few jokes here and there is a bad thing, and Barry seems to take them okay, but as soon as Clive does a gag (which he later admitted was crass) about them being "shit writers", look at how quickly Barry's foot starts jerking around, and he says to the audience "I'm glad you find this funny." Clive doesn't pick up on it, and Barry actually seems to get over it and get back on track... but as soon as he does that "tossers" routine, it's all over. Straight away it's "that's why you've had us on your show", and he mentions tossers again moments later... when he walks off, it's "tossers" he references again. Clearly he couldn't get over that one.

@@Eddycheeee - All three took amphetamines (which were readily prescribed back then for alertness) to maintain their crazy schedule (3 LP's the first year alone in the UK) and they are very addictive to some people. I was prescribed them myself in the early 70's as a critical care nurse for 12 hour night shifts. After 2 weeks I threw them out. 😲Barry said Robin was "off the pills" in the early to mid 70's and was "normal" again. His natural personality though was always volatile. By the time of this interview he was a teetotaler and vegan.

Because I don't know British slang, I didn't know what a tosser was. I just looked it up. That, plus saying his dog liked the Bee Gees music was totally uncalled for. Look at Barry's leg as the interview progresses. So so glad they walked out. It's a fact that the careers of the Bee Gees were so much more successful than Clive's ass. Love Barry forever!!! This interview seemed to happen around the time they released their album 'This is where I came In', IDK.. The brothers do have a great sense of humour, they said they don't take themselves too seriously. However Clive's jabs were way too insulting and he kept putting 'salt on old wounds'. I think that he would have loved to stir up the rivalry between the brothers. There are quite a number of comedians/ comedic acts making fun of them. SNL has created a comedy sketch, 'The Barry Gibb talk show' and Barry did not take offence to how he was portrayed in those skits.

Ordinary and chubby Clive Anderson was stunned with embarrassment as Barry, Robin and Maurice got up and left. He made a fool of himself. Once they walked out of him, he had to terminate his program right after with the deflection. He didn't know what to do. But the audience should have left also in support. Rather, they stayed and cheered.

The common theory is that Clive favouring Robin over Barry was the breaking point - because the 1968/69-era tension between the two dominant brothers had never truly dissipated. But Barry didn't seem to have grasped that when you're being "interviewed" by a comedian, you're always going to be the stooge.
