Hey the the Ironclad is local only to the Central Texas area. I find about one or two a year working in construction here. And literally the only thing they know about its life cycle is that it lives on live oak trees. BTW it's just a theory what it eats, the other theory is it eats lichen off live oaks.

I've lived in north and south parts of East Texas, but I don't think I've ever seen this beetle. however the fact that it's called so hard and yet the Velvet ant doesn't even get used as a comparison just shows it must be in another league. I can confirm that they are definitely pin breakers . . . broke quite a few on a few other species of ironclad haha. Got one in with a hammer once though XD My friends and I have also noticed with our collections that things such as leaving them in the freezer for 2 weeks or completely submerged in ethanol for a week just results in them coming back to life, sometimes on the pin and they just try to walk around with a 2 inch pin stuck in them XD Even know someone who removed a leg and tried to inject one with formaldehyde and also kill it in the freezer and the dang thing wouldn't die . . . Also find them caught in spider webs all the time completely wrapped up and then eventually cut out of the net by the spider who couldn't eat it and I'll unwrap it to find it's still alive even though I saw it in that web a month ago. On the other side, I've had random ones just shatter just by being dropped (while alive) but those ones probably just had a lot of abuse beforehand haha. They're also weak on the membranes between body segments so not completely impervious but damn near close.
