I got a chinchilla in my 20's. It's an awesome pet...but NOT for children. Oh, and Zephyr the Chinchilla is still alive, as they can live as much as 20 years.
@klyffjohnson
@klyffjohnson 5 жыл бұрын
@@drana150 I'm happy to hear that, and I was speaking more generally. The main reasons I say they aren't for kids are the fact that chinchillas are so nocturnal they are often most active when children are going to bed and that they don't really like being handled because of the temperature difference. Most of the other special care things can be taught pretty easily, and when you get a routine down they're pretty straightforward.

Mine passed away after 20 years and 8 months. When I got him, their lifespan was only about 6 years. I looked at him for years after that thinking, "Damn, you're still here, eh?" @@RPG_Angie There is a lot of common knowledge now that wasn't at all common back then. We didn't realize the great importance of a low fat diet - nuts were a commonly recommended treat back then. There were even discussions about bathing chinchillas (in water). People literally had no idea... and it wasn't just ignorant pet owners, even the experts had a lot to learn about nutrition and care. It just took us all awhile to figure it out.

Every urge I have to get a pet comes with a burning desire to create some over the top habitat for them, so that they can have fun even when my attention is inconsistent... Basically, I know my own limits so I want to make sure that whatever pets I have, have a home that fulfills their needs and desires without too much direct input from myself... Since I enjoy seeing others be happy. After all...it's easier to be a chronic bachelor when you can still find something to enjoy in seeing other be happy in a relationship that you don't have any ability to obtain because you don't live in the right place for it.

Even simple goldfish usually need more care than most people know. A single goldfish requires a ten gallon tank to have proper care. With good care a goldfish should live 5-10 years. Fun story though, they used to live in our spare bedroom, we had guests in the house once and the chinchillas waited until the guests were asleep, and then played "throw the poo at the snoring idiot". Guests woke up and found the bed covered in pellets, and we had to throw away the bedding. Guests saw the funny side, stopped the freeloaders using us as a free B&B too :D

My family had a chinchilla as a pet when I was young, and it was super hard to take care of, we did everything that was on the care sheets for it and it just seemed miserable all the time in its cage (it was a huge cage we got for it from someone that had owned chinchillas for years) so we ended up giving it to the person that raised them and knew how to keep them happy and healthy. So thank you Karl for trying to educate people against them as pets as, whilst adorable, they are not something to own if you don't have the time and money to invest in them to ensure their health and happiness. (And for anyone wondering, Nibbles was his name and he lived happily for years after we had him)

There is a sience experiment going that has been going for fifty years and the goal is to make foxo in to a doggo. Its rather interesting tbh. Its not the same foxo that is fifty. They have been breeding foxoets that were friendly to humans.

No, they are domesticating foxes. A fox is never going to act like a dog. When they are fully domestic, they will act like a domestic fox. They will not act like a dog once domesticated.

These channels about someone getting a crazy pet and being like "this is how it is to live with a lemur (or whatever) in a shitty New York apartment; I don't suggest it, leave it to us professionals" and basically making that their brand are weird. I feel like it's a lot of unqualified people pretending that they are special animal empaths or something... Like, they try so hard to be like Steve Irwin or one of those zookeeper/animal sanctuary shows in their "10 reasons to never get a wombat" videos. Some channels are legit, but some people get way in over their head... Like, that's not a sanctuary for rescued birds, that's a spare bedroom!

Totally agree with you on exotic pets. I have a parrot that my parents had then she bonded to me, so now if I ever need to go on a trip I have to carefully take into account how long I'll be away. Also she's very loud and expensive. But she's also my best friend and I wouldn't trade her for the world. My friend's dad told me that his retirement dream was to own a parrot. I told him that he certainly has the room and money to properly care for one, retirement would give plenty of time to form a bond, and there are plenty of rescues that could use good homes. But also to get to know the parrot's personality before taking it home and be prepared to be bitten on occasion, especially towards the beggining of the relationship. He said he wouldn't put up with any biting, so I advised him to maybe not get a parrot.

Though if someone absolutely wanted an exotic pet... African pygmy hedgehogs are pretty cool and relatively easy to care for, you just need to make sure they remain used to being handled and make sure they stay warm enough in winter so they don’t go into hibernation. I’d totally love to have another hedgehog, Spike was cool. 🦔❤️

Back when I breed rabbits, I refused to sell them a month or less before Easter because parents would buy them for their kids Easter gifts, but had no idea how to take care of them, and they wound up dirty and sick. Then they wanted me to refund them their money and nurse a sick animal back to health. Rabbits aren't even that hard to care for, but you have to KNOW HOW, and it's not something a six year old can do by themselves. Ugh.
