My uncle lived in Adams. I was born, raised, and still live in Nashville, about 40 miles away. I grew up reading every old book I could on the haunting in the 1970s, before the story was morphed beyond recognition by the town of Adams, who profit from tourism for the Witch, and by the internet. There was no bad blood at all between the Bell family and Kate Batts because she was a member of the family. Her father was Mrs. Bell's brother. And she herself was quite close to them, as well as a tremendously well-respected member of the community, trusted to teach Sunday school in the local Baptist church. She accompanied the Bells on their move from Carolina to Tennessee. In fact she might have been the reason for the move. Tennesse allowed a divorce based on desertion. Kate had made a bad marriage to Mr. Batts, an alcoholic who often abandoned her. Given that she moved onto the Bell property, and was gifted a small corner of his farm as her own, this may be a likely story. Now, this would create bad blood between John and Mr. Batts. And there is some indication of a lawsuit between them. But Kate remained a vocal supporter of the Bell's during most of the haunting - especially of her aunt and cousin- so she did not share his views. No one at the time really suspected Kate. And the actual Bell descendants have gone out of their way to clear her. For example, in the 1930s, Dr. Bell, John's great-grandson, wrote a book emphasizing they did not suspect her at all, and never knew what caused "the Spirit" as they called it, to haunt them. As for Andrew Jackson and otherr so-called Bells this is mistaken identity. There were multiple "John Bell"s in Middle Tennessee in the early 19th Century. Jackson, for example, was actually friends with a John Bell of Davidson county, not the one in Robertson county. But you can see where the confusion set in. Most of the "descendants" who talk about the haunting are similarly related to different John Bells when investigated. The real descendants rarely, if ever, talk to the media to this day. And the haunting never stopped. When Betsy finally married, she settled in Mississippi. There the haunting continued. No one connected the 2 cases until an American TV show called "Sighting" stumbled across it in the early 1990s. Adams Tennessee still doesn't acknowledge this, as it might challenge their money making. That cabin isn't a replica. At best, it us an old slave cabin that probably never belonged to the Bells at all slapped up to milk tourists. Contemporary descriptions if the Bell cabin are a large, two-story house with an attached kitchen in the back and large porch. The cabin at the museum is a single room cabin clearly not home to any well-to-do family at all. In case you can't tell, don't waste time in Adams now. The "Bell Cave" can't be linked to the family by property records. The cabin is clearly a fake. And neither the state, the Federal government nor any historical oversight board anywhere will certify the Museum, calling it a tourist trap. Sadly the original and haunting story is all but lost now to greed. There aren't enough folks like you, oh Scholar, trying to tell the truth anymore. Thank you for doing such a fine job.

Pat Fitzhuh wrote a well researched book originally published in the nineties that covered the problematic Kate Batts theory. It also covered several generations of experiences within the family. Many were in the cave.

As an occultist and magician, it is obvious to me, that this phantom is a demon. There are many clues to this, but the most forthright and obvious one appears to be, when it claims to be of all the elements, and claims to have been made over millions of years, as well as being of both heaven and hell. Yet, for me the most telling is when it says it is of the air, and travels in the air. For demonologist, this is well known knowledge regarding most low-level demons. That they are of the element air, and use the air to travel. So, for me it is obvious it is a demon. Particular, and air demon. There are particular ways to deal with particular demon's. The element of the demon is the most common marker, telling one how to deal with the demon. Then, there are many other things. Such as its name, which will usually reveal its rank or hierarchy. Which then reveals which day, month, and time of day in which to deal with said demon. All these things now tell you which weapons you should use and dealing with said demon. Such as which magical tool, being dagger, cup, pentacle, or wand. With all this you should know which incense to burn, what color to use, and color of candles to use. As well as which numbers to use, and how many candles to use. And of course which direction of the magical circle to work in. Of course though, not being magicians, they would know none of this. And were therefore totally helpless, for as long as the demon wanted to hang around.

Seeing you on screen, retelling the story of the Bell Witch, and all while being interspersed with the regular images and artistic renderings you provide was a very interesting change of pace. It's really cool to see you still branching out and trying new things for the benefit of the channel. Even cooler is how well it's being executed too. You did an excellent job accompanying your narration with facial expressions and body gestures. Wasn't forced or overly hammy, and instead, you looked very natural and comfortable in front of the camera. Like a long time friend who's sharing a ghost story they heard once. I knew a first cousin in the bell family back in the 80's. He told me about a wolf and other strange things that still make it dangerous for anyone related to be on parts of the old property. He had some strange scars to prove some of it. He told me that the haunting was still going on and was glad he was only a cousin because the direct blood line was getting hit worse and was about to die out from it. His story was rather different in details from most common retellings, and far scarier.

I was first exposed to the bell witch by family who told me story as a kid. It was well known in Kentucky which is just a state over. Wasn't till I got older that I realized it wasn't just a ghost story and that it was real events happening to real people. The authenticity makes it all the more creepier. Great video Laura.

Same here. This story seems to me like another case of “the witch” actually being a woman that was disliked by the teller of the story. Other stories of this nature tend to be against people of color. If it’s one thing that these stories all seem to share is white guilt and fear of uprise for what they’ve done.

I've been to Bell Wich property and her grave. The entire wood is off it feels EXTREMELY bizarre... My boyfriend took me on day trip and didn't tell me where we we're going. I thought we we're just going on a hike. The moment I stepped into the forest I said something isn't right about this place my throat got tight my hands sweating but pressed on ultimately we got outta there because of how quite it was then he told me the location. I got food a small toy alcohol and tobacco and apologize to the wood for bothering it leaving my offering behind

I cant help but notice a similarity between these events and the events at "skinwalker ranch". how it began in both cases with a strange doglike creature on their property that was shot at. and just like skinwalker ranch other weird creatures were seen such as strange birds.

I used to live in Clarksville which is right next to Adams. We went out to the Bell Witch Cave one time in the early 80's. It was on the back side of this farmer's property. There were no official "tours" then. You just had to ask the farmer and it was up to him if he wanted to take you back there and show it to you.

Love the paranormal scholar. I have lived in Tennessee all my life. As far as the mountains I wouldn't want to be in them overnight especially, the ones around here. The most scary part of the Bell Witch story was that it was reported to go to church with the family and sing hymns in what they said was the most beautiful high soprano woman's voice.
