In the first half of the twentieth century, the paranormal investigator Harry Price was widely regarded as the "enemy of Spiritualism" being a sceptic who debunked many mediums, ghosts and hauntings. There was, however, one case - involving a family séance held at a home in London - which he described as "remarkable". The materialisations of the spirit child Rosalie haunted him his whole life, with him never being able to conclude it was a hoax. What happened that night?

I found a 1st edition book with origional dust jacket, signed by Harry Price with the most odd photographs within, all in absolutely pristine condition. It was in my great aunts library & i asked her if i could borrow it She told me to keep it, it had belonged to a cousin of hers who was mad keen on spiritualism but my g aunt said it was hogwash! Its a great book to read & the people in the photos are very odd, there are white trumpets floating in the air, long jointed leg type things with horrible pincer things on the end which are very creepy. Its an amazing book in that the great man signed in in proper ink I doubt its been read much hence its excellent condition I was very lucky to have been given it, but its now wrapped up to preserve it from deterioration Which is a shame as it deserves to be read but ive read it & no one knows much about Harry Price these days.

@@bobbysalkeld2634 Oooh its great going spoaching In the drawers, forgotten rooms dust covered library stacks, attics of relatives. Not that id have gone around doing this without permission as i wouldnt like some cheeky young whippersnapper doing that to me By Jove, no ! My grandparents lived in an enormous house when i was young, i doubt they saw each other for days on end haha My Grandmother was a painter & lived in one part of the house & my grandfather was always out with gardener or ensconced in his study, they got on well probably because of that but my Gran encouraged me to "spoach" because id always come up with stuff shed forgotten about or never seen for years. I was a veritable mole & had the time of my life burrowing though tons of things stored or left eons ago. Alot of my furniture was from my grandparents & probably worth a bomb but i love it all & have no interest in its value. My grandads study had lots of framed maps on the walls which i now have, books up on books, in fact my great aunt was my grandfather's sister who had been an avid reader & loved books on expeditions & travelling adventures so i also got those too as i did much travelling in my life & although abit outdated in customs & politics they were jolly useful. My best find was in my grandparents attic where i found a wardrobe full of victorian & Edwardian clothes. Alot were moth eaten but alot were in garment bags & there were fur stoles & tippets, dresses of lavish satins & laces, velvets, mens evening suits, evening bags & walking canes, brilliant hats I still wear the dark grey Homberg i found all those yrs ago After wearing a few of them i gave up most to museums who restored them & loaned them out to other places & festivals, museums all over the country & it was good they were being seen by all. To this day i wish i could have just a few hours back in my grandads study, his walls, floor to ceiling were book shelves interspersed with his framed maps, so many fabulous books! I even found some victorian naughty books! Perhaps from his youth, hidden behind other tomes. But ive got 1st edition books on astronomy ( seriously outdated haha) some great esoteric books from the last century by Helena Blavatsky, Members of the Golden Dawn & G Fraser, the Theosophists, Books by Shelly, Keats, Byron all the classics & beautifully bound. Even a huge leather bound collection of a sort of forerunner to weekly comics but for the discerning young victorian person The whole book is the literary magazine called Young England, costing One Old British Penny for every week of a year, back to back from 1st jan to 31st Dec & think its from 1898 ( im not at home at min so cant go check) Each magazine is substantial hence the weight of it. Some of the topics & articles are so racist by todays values its embarassing to read some of them as they can be so awful treating little black children like subhumans & calling them Picaninnies!!! But there are so many good things in them like advice on driving a team of horses, how to turn the worn collar of a shirt, diningtable etiquette, how to make mock turtle soup, make a health tonic & even adverts for cocaine pain tablets!!!!!! Ah well, there i go again, rabbiting on & on, so apologies you have had to wade through all my guff. Thanks for replying, lovely to know people still read 📚😁

@Belo 225 Oh i shall, i do have some books that require special handling because of their age or are 1st editions & it does feel so wonderful to hold them in your hands esp old ones, their contents etc. I just LOVE books Not for value, ive never gone out looking to buy books for that reason, the thought of parting with a special book would feel like selling my relative or loved one. I do indeed have some rare books some inherited fr my grandparents who had a proper library room, others ive picked up from carboots, charity shops, jumble sales & not realising until ive got them home & looked through them have i realised they are rare or valuable. I must say ive done the "right thing" when ive found some rare books or 1st editions or signed by authors, when i know why they have value & im not so much interested with their content ive returned the books to the charity shop or vicar from the church jumble sale & told them to sell them to raise funds & given them names to sell to or auction off so they wont get ripped off by conmen. Its a nice, lovely feeling to love a book & also know its a rare or valuable book which makes it such a privilege to own it for your lifetime then wonder who it will pass to after you have departed.

Ive never thought of writing before, never thought i was good enough as there are some damn fine authors around. Most of the things ive commented on are usually things that have happened personally & believe me, i have a knack of being in the wrong place at the wrong time & you wouldnt believe the situations ive become involved in while just minding my own business! Plus i seem to have become a kind of witness to things, ive seen incredible things, but ive just recorded them in notebooks & feel its something im meant to do, sort of giving validity to happenings that no one else has seen but me so they have to exist because, simply, i saw them happen. I dont tell anyone just record them, im not a sensationalist or drama queen, not my personality at all. Im a great believer in fate, so many times i shouldnt have survived certain things but somehow seem to slip between the cracks & slide through completely unharmed which just proves to me that if its not your time to go then you dont! You should live your life to the full & yes, sometimes take risks or take up a once in a lifetime chance to do something. Forget about dangers or imagined senarios of deadly outcomes, just DO it, later in life you will have no regrets & so many wonderful & exciting stories to tell Its good to be free, hold back the " What Ifs" & do it, thinking through the pro's & con's mean you probably wont do it. Jump on to that 1st feeling of utter excitement & go with it. You will be fine, if its not your time then nothing you do will bring it forward or put you in harms way, you have a great action packed, adventurous, fulfilled life & probably touched many other people's lives too, those whos lives would have been unhappy or sad but because you touched their lives with sunlight & joy makes such an incredible difference to you & them. How the heck did i get on to all that? It must have had to come out, maybe it was meant for you. Anyway im so happy you sent me such wonderful words, im privileged, i mean that genuinely Drop a comment or txt any time i save all my comments from really nice people ive picked up on their vibes so to speak & know i can send them a few words or see if they are doing ok Oki Doki Pig in a Poki ( Shudder ..how moronic.. i must be in a nauseously perky mood today! I would've been more worried about the "luminous paint" on those mirrors! This paint couldn't have been anything but the _radioluminescent_ paint available at the time, which used radium-226 as its energy source. Even ghostly manifestations are likely to have an aversion to gamma rays.

On one hand I agree with other commenters in regards to his description of the child having had a heartbeat & being warm to the touch indicating it having been a real child. On the other hand due to a few personal experiences with the paranormal & feeling just how “alive” something had to be & yet couldn’t possibly be, it’s hard to dismiss his claims out of hand. The truth is, we as a species are very judgmental & that is without knowledge, just based purely on our own beliefs. Who is to say what is real & what isn’t if you didn’t experience it yourself first hand? Very interesting video & story. Love your channel & could listen to you talk about anything.

While I have never touched a ghost,I have had several experiences with spirits. I've witnessed a shadow "peeker" in a room full of people,we all saw it. I've also seen a full bodied apparition walking along a cemetery fence, in fact, that is what tipped me to the fact that it was a ghost as he was walking a path no person would walk due to bushes, rocks and distance from any destination. There have been other experiences that have convinced me that some sort of existence continues. I have a scientific outlook and so appreciate this story as an attempt to gather empirical evidence but it is just damned difficult! Thanks,I love your channel.

Some spirit mediums claimed to be able to create lifelike forms from ether (not sure if this is the proper spelling) on a regular basis. Ether in it's archaic meaning of an extremely rarefied and very elastic substance that was once thought to permeate all space and matter.

@@ryusantos6145 I would think if such a thing were true/possible that it would take a LOT of energy, psychic or otherwise, to manifest that. I wonder if anyone else has read Hans Holzers books? I was fascinated by them in high school in the 70s! He was the only one doing really organized ghost investigations. There is a tv show now where his daughter is reintroducing some of his most famous cases....he was the big kahuna of psychic research back then and traveled with a medium who always spoke, when in a trance, in a very weird, deep voice, which I always thought was kind of strange and unnecessary....
3 жыл бұрын
I had one of his books year ago, when I was a boy. Some of the photos in it were obviously fake, but a few of them were more intriguing. I remember seeing Holzer interviewed on an old episode of In Search Of with Leonard Nimoy.

@ I LOVED "In Search Of"!!! Leonard Nimoy is a favorite of mine as well, the more I learn about him, the more I like him. He did an episode about the artist Van Gogh, that inspired me into art! Hans Holzer always seemed over the top and often fake, as you said, but he was the only guy, practically, at the time, putting out easy to digest books on ghosts. I always felt his medium was completely showing off, and the tv show where they now show clips from a lot of his old investigations, kind of irritates me, but I believe in spirits, etc. I just could never understand why a medium had to suddenly start talking like someone with a deep scratchy voice when they were connecting to the spirit world!

Eric Dingwall was a rival of Harry Price, which means his investigation was not reliable at all (and must be taken with more than a grain of salt) - he was prejudiced even before starting to look into the case, and it’s safe to say that his investigation most likely focused on “destroying” Price’s report rather than the actual case itself. I’m not saying Rosalie’s case was real (and in fact it wasn’t), but just that Dingwall’s investigation is even less real because of how prejudiced its premise was.

The Funny thing is that Price's account actually supports the letter of the mysterious person that wrote him years later to tell him how it was done. Price himself mentions that the 6 year old on his close inspection looked older than her years should. This should have been a tip off to him. But he was so caught up in the moment. the differentness to what he normally dealt with and quite possibly his own confidence that he looked over details in his own accounts of the events.

Here's what I find most curious: Price was able to detect "breathing", respiratory movement of the chest of a manifestation of a spirit and even palpate a pulse. Having worked in as nurse in an ICU after serving previously in the military, I find it difficult to accept Price's documentation as factual. This is also taking into account I am very certain of the presence of spiritual entities, including those who are of deceased humans unable to let go and move on. A corpse is cold to the touch because there is no circulation occurring to maintain body temperature. That is well known. A spirit however is not a corpse. It is also not physical and has no properties of a physical body, alive or dead. Price could feel respiratory movement, a pulse and reported the flesh he touched to be warm yet not as warm as a living person. In 1937, even homes with good heating were not warm in the same manner they are now. That is to say, they are warmer than the weather outside on a December evening in 1937 yet not terribly warm by our standards today. Price would have been aware of this and, in considering the size of the parlour in which they held the séance, it's acceptable that a hand not intentionally being kept warm would feel warm but not comfortably so. The arguments and evidence against Price at the time seemed to have only hinted at this but as I haven't read any of them yet, I can't state that with any degree of certainty. What I can say is that, given what I know and have experienced, a physical manifestation such as Price describes seems incredible and fantastic. I know that I have never encountered anything even remotely similar in my encounters with spiritual entities. Most of my experiences have been with spirits going on about business as usual as if nothing has changed or have been nearly palpable in the negativity they have radiated, likely over the fact of being dead. I can't say for certain with respect to the latter however, I consider that probable as those experiences were in hospital where I worked and usually within a few minutes to an hour or so following the death of someone who had been a patient. I and other nurses have felt touched, sometimes struck, poked or pinched, coupled with other occurrences such as having an odd sensation somewhere between nausea and euphoria for no reason, along with fear (we tend to get hypervigilant as soon as something affects us we know shouldn't and has no known origin at the time) or dread. Occasionally, there has been a sense of peace as opposed to anything negative. Anyway, we are very aware of our surroundings and how things ought to be and they aren't. Sometimes things move without any human assistance, other times it's almost as if the corpse who was our patient has a mirror image superimposed over it for a moment. Sometimes, very rarely in my experience, shadow figures exit the vicinity and move through the unit. In all of that, I've never once seen or felt a spirit physically manifest itself and be present for examination. Certainly, people in 1937 would know the difference between living and dead human flesh. City dwellers may not have been as close to the presence of death as more rural folk however, at the time, customs even in England were much closer to the deceased than they are in most western countries and cultures now. We don't touch our dearly departed much after they've departed and I find that a little sad. I'm sure that Price's report raised more than a few eyebrows and the response from his rival was not out of character. What seems to be out of character is Price, himself. He was a skeptic and worked to reveal the falsehoods in spiritualism and then came Rosalie. I can't speak to the veracity of his claims entirely, I can only be curious at his report when considering my experiences and understanding of death, corpses and the effect that has on the living, as well as my experiences with spiritual entities. Honestly, I think it will always be a matter of belief in cases like this one and, perhaps, all instances of experience with the spirits of the dead. We have no way to verify and validate anything Price wrote about. We weren't there. Even if we were, should the conditions of that séance been accurate, we would have had to have a secret device recording everything. If we did and if spiritual entities can have as direct a response to our presence as Rosalie seems to have had, they may also be capable of disrupting the devices we put out. This was, as always, a brilliant video with excellent research, exceptional production and masterful narration. I thoroughly enjoyed this, Laura and Erik, and I look forward to the next! Be well, stay healthy and remember: The more you know...

@@jackdurden466 I just cant imagine he'd miss anything, in his account he appears very thorough. I too am not necessarily convinced it was a hoax, as very strange paranormal things happen all the time and the vast mass of normies have no idea, trying to reduce everything and rationalize this or that as a "hoax" or misunderstanding. There are many accounts of the materializations of spirits by magicians and witches. Who's to say that this was not a curious and extremely rare manifestation of natural psychic ability fuelled by the raw emotion of a mother who has lost her child, and aided by her living in an Era which the fad of psychicism and mediumship was more accessible? There are many more variables that would all serve to make such an "ultra-phenomenon" more of a rarity which were present by the time period, persons and location, but it's late. There are many questions about the very strange things revealed at that era which are quietly swept away from the minds populating our "rational" society which I would personally like to see addressed in one way or another.

Another phenomenal video, narration and research done by you all at Paranormal Scholar. This is what I can’t wrap my mind around is how none of the powder was disturbed, and Price did check “Mrs. X,” and the other participants to make sure that none of them were hiding anything. I’m sorry but IF “Joan” was actually in her early 30s, that’s a very big difference from an 17 and 11 year old girl. They’re more developed (breast size, pubic hair, hip width, etc), but Price didn’t describe Rosalie in that way. Maybe there was a child hiding somewhere, but there would’ve been some sort of noise. Most homes, during that period, had hardwood or wooden floors which creaked, but Price didn’t describe hearing anyone walking. I just don’t know how it could’ve been faked without Price hearing someone walking, or the “traps” weren’t disturbed.

As was stated, Price was not a real expert. He seems to have been a popular dilatant. And as far as 'experts' go, many have a predisposition to want to believe in what they're researching. Like the end of the X Files opening montage states: I WANT TO BELIEVE. This happens a lot in investigations as well as in life. A lot of sad marriages begin this way. However, admittedly, this was not necessarily the case with Price. This predisposition occurs in Spiritualistic studies and even in science, the Piltdown man is an example. The answer is obvious and simple: a real child was in the room, probably concealed somewhere despite the search. That's why all those conditions restraining Price's activity during the session were in place. As far as the search is concerned, magician's ofter have the setting for the trick examined. It's nothing new. The 'Rosalie Letter' explanation makes very good sense. P.S. Jesus said, 'A spirit hath not flesh and bone.' I believe Jesus over Price.

Price's own close examination in the dim light and saying that she appeared older than her age (likely meaning 6) lends credence to the admission letter later written to him. And is one of the things that he over looked. I really think he got caught up in the moment and in his own confidence regarding the whole thing because the Seance was not what he was used to debunking and he was so sure of his methods for detecting the obvious usual fakery that he would deal with that he was not looking for other potential sources right in front of him.

I imagine this could simply have been part of a concocted story, but I agree, that jumped out at me immediately when it was mentioned. From what limited understanding I have of "professional seances" at the time, it always seems like the distressed approaches the medium to help them contact their deceased loved ones. This is the first case I have heard of in which it is claimed the deceased daughter approached her Mom on her own. To me anyway at least, it is a clear, unique, and distinct part of the case that really separates it from the typical medium led seance of the time period. This is a real tough one to judge based on all the information, on both sides, that is known about it. Even the information presented by both sides can often be used to support either side when you take a step back at really look at it. The "Rosalie" letter, for instance, could be a "confession" letter relaying the truth about tge case, but there are the obvious questions you need to consider when examining it - these are very well presented in this video. With these discrepancies, there is also the possibility that the older daughter wrote that letter when their names were begining to be brought into the public light. She could easily gave done it to protect her now aging Mother from having "old and very sensitive wounds" torn open again in the loss of her younger daughter, the "real" Rosalie. Heck maybe Rosalie was still hanging around, waiting for her Mom to join her before proceeding on to what comes next and the letter was written to protect both of them. Like many of these cases, outsiders reading these reports rarely have the ability to get a full understanding of what occured - some things simply cannot be adequately conveyed through words alone. In the end, I have to the words of the apparently shocked, bewildered, and amazed, hardened "professional" skeptic and debunker. He was there. He was a well known debunker and built a solid reputation on that. He still said he could not debunk it and it might be real. He was their and has credibility. I have to go with him and his statements on it, rather than the "professional" skeptics you use anything, reasonable or not, to attempt to disprove EVERYTHING (looking at you, Joe Nickel). Perhaps it was done for money - but perhaps it also was a real, truthful case that was used to financially help those who needed it badly at the time. Both may be true, in the end.

Could it be the grieving mother unknowingly materialised the child through her consciousness? I mean in Tibetan tantric practice known as Tulpa, it's said one can materialise anyone, in flesh, just by concentrating on their mind. Any case, this is fascinating account of life after death.

an interesting case - hard to piece it all together. I think if there was a hidden panel that eluded Price then that is really as far as we can take it - even if in fact the manifestation was real, the presence of there being a hidden panel means the case is sullied - just like say ufo photos that are blurry or lacking a point of reference - could be real but the evidence is not clear enough. that the widow wouldnt be able to recognise her own child though, and would mistake another pretending - this part i dont have a satisfactory answer for
