Hi there Lars .. This is a somewhat late submission. This post popped up on my feed and I don't recall having watched it previously (the operative words being 'don't recall' .. after 71 Summers .. the Memory ..). Correct. The Särma Windproof Jacket is Awesome. I've had mine in Black some years now and it is still my favourite Outdoor Cold Weather Jacket. Together with the Särma Fleece Top .. our Northern Swiss Winters don't stand a chance. Varusteleka .. a good bunch of guys to do business with. Quick, efficient Service .. reasonable pricing with a great if perhaps somewhat unorthodox Sense of Humour. I sure, as with many others, a firm 👍👍👍 from me. Take care ..

Great video as always ! I have the Varusteleka Särma windproof smock, the one you indicate. Two, actually, the kaki green one and the ocre yellow one. Some comments on them: they are great jackets, very little to fault them, windproof, will resist light rain, fantastic pockets and all that. And no mesh. The minor criticisms that I have are: - no real collar (like the Bririth CS95 old-style smock the rolled-up hood forms the collar, but if the hood is unrolled you really have no collar, so in cold weather better ensure you wear a warm layer that itself does have a collar, or a good scarf. - the fabric is a bit light, good for warm weather but it seems slightly fragile - I once put a metal file in one of the hem pockets and it cut through the fabric after a short while. OK, not smart to put a metal object with sharp corners in a pocket, but still. I repaired the hole (it was in the green jacket that I use for rough things anyway). And I then took an afternoon to wax the jacket using a block of paraffin/beeswax, a hair dryer and an iron. That not only improves the water resistance enormously, but it also renders the fabric a lot more resistant to wear and tear. The fabric, by the way, is light enough to roll up the sleeves, while still being windproof. - the big velcro tabs on the sleeves: superfluous unless you want to deck yourself out in garish morale tabs. I took them off (it leaves no trace if you do that carefully). Those large pads also render the upper sleeves less flexible - it's more comfortable without them. - The 'canadian' buttons and the tape that holds them are always black, no matter the colour of the jacket. For some people, that makes them stand out like a sore thumb on particularly the yellow version. Like I said, these are very minor criticisms. I love those jackets. If you want all the good stuff of the CS95 DPM windproof smock in civilian colours, that is the one to get. There is now an oxblood red version as well, though not in stock at the moment - I'll probably get that one too as it is the perfect compromise between the woodland green rough/dirty use version and the very high visibility yellow one. The dark red is still clearly civilian but stands out less. The first thing I will do if I get that one is wax it. Good points: too many almost to mention. Mostly: pockets, pockets and pockets. Huge zippered chest pockets behind the outer ones, and not being mesh, truly useable. The hand warmer pockets that have a thin fleece lining on the back of the hem pocket and solid fabric on the other, so no thick fleece that can soak up too much water inside the jacket. The little drain holes in the hem pockets that lead inside the jacket so you can lead the shock cord of the hem through them so the end won't hang around freely and thus won't catch on stuff. The practical sleeve pockets with a vertical zipper for easy access (no velcro guys !). The big main buttons that you can use for casual closing of the jacket without needing the zipper. Et cetera. They are also super comfortable to wear. Finally, the price that is close to that of a surplus jacket and about a third to a quarter of any polycotton unlined Big Brand Scandinavian jacket... ;-)

Well, being ex-British Army from many many years ago, what can I say - I have a number of British DPM Smocks, one was actually being worn in Afghanistan and I actually managed to identify it's former owner, BUT, the jacket you showed Lars appeared to have underarm zips (correct me if I am wrong,) and none of my British Army DPM Smocks have any underarm zips for aeration however, my German Smock does!! The main thing that I look for when buying a Smock is the material which must be Ripstop and WINDPROOF as if not that minimum standard then, it might as well be toilet paper as far as I am concerned. Next, you hate MESH and I HATE VELCRO - we never had it when I served and I will tell a story on my own channel in the future how VELCRO can cost a soldier's life, but I am not a Survival Channel, I am a Smallholding and Self Sufficiency Channel albeit, I wear and use Military Surplus clothing everyday. WTF does anyone need those huge Velcro patches on the upper sleeves for when it is meant to be a 'savvy' street jacket. In my environment, VELCRO is a hindrance and everything catches and sticks to it so bad, that I have had to 'hack' them by sticking material over them or unstitching them completely. I have NO IDEA who designs these Jackets, but I doubt that there is much input from soldiers on the ground who field test them and know what is good and bad in any civilian designed jacket. I don't understand the SBS comment made by another subscriber - why would the Navy request or need mesh pockets even if you spend half of your service time up to your neck in water as ordinary brass/aluminium drainage holes would surely do the job better and leave you with a more solid pocket? The shallow pocket at the back bottom of the smock is known to us as a Poacher's Pocket and the same as you get in a Barbour waxed outdoor jacket albeit, I have never inserted a dead Rabbit or similar into it, but you can put some useful stuff in it which again, perhaps in the future, I will demonstrate. In my experience, this Poachers pocket had at least one central button if not more to stop your game/stuff falling out. You can start the out with Mesh campaign and I'll join you with the OUT WITH VELCRO campaign. wink

SBS don't spend most of their time in water, unless you are talking about diving where smocks become irrelevant. They do spend time in and out of water so fast drying and not holding on to too much water is an advantage. What's best is not drain holes (which is to do with the initial shedding of water), but the overall advantage of having mesh instead of a solid piece of fabric. Mesh has high surface area so it dries fairly fast, and doesn't become hot spot as easily as a solid piece of fabric because air pass through much easier. Surface area is everything in insulation and cooling/ventilation. I do agree with your comment regarding velcro though - I think it should be use sparingly and in areas where you don't often access.

Same here, have one since last year, also with the fleece hoodie, my go-about jacket combo this winter. Love the Canadian buttons, I often do not bother to close the zipper, just three buttons if it is not windy. A Mora HD fits in a zippered chest pocket and a Silky Gomboy 210 in one of the lower pockets, so this is typically a Survival Russia jacket I guess. Bummer for Lars that they do not deliver to Russia at present.

The mesh pockets are for ventilation (don't cause heat spots), and they fast drying. I don't like mesh, but considering the fact that you'd be putting stuff like maps inside and not your jingly keys, it's fine. I have a Level Peaks smock (which has mesh for the inside chest pockets), and they work fine.

Hey Lars--the Canadian Forces winter infrantry coat is this exact model, but much more robust. I bought mine from a surplus store for 40.00 CAD or some thing. It is awwwesome and pretty DARN warm! Though, as I live in the city, and work in an academic environment (archaeology), its hard for me to make good use of it outside of hiking or "bushcraft".

Hi Lars cool jacket but that Jacket is totally different to the ones i was issued when i served (CS95 green dpm and desert pattern). In common - was mesh on the inside pockets but after wearing these for years on exercise etc it never became a problem and the bottoms of pockets didn't have the mesh. The hood was also integrated but prior to that design they had a hoodless jacket issued around 2001-2005 which didn't have the inside mesh on pockets - sounds like your dream jacket. I have a lot of these in my loft in a box, thanks for the video cause i now might start wearing them again 😉

Yeah, i have to fulfill the duties of a "building superintendant" sometimes in my day job and i carry tools in my pockets almost always (screw drivers, wrenches, allen keys, duck tape, zip ties, bits and bobs, nothing fancy) and one jacket i have has mesh in the upper two front pockets. The mesh has snagged on my items so many times that it´s now rather "hairy" and out of control. The snagging has actually gotten worse with time. I don´t really wear it much any longer. I wear an old Bundeswehr Parka mostly these days, but i´m thinking about buying the varusteleka jacket. Maybe even in yellow. Why don´t you have an affiliate link for it, Lars? You would make a few bucks on my new yellow Smock....

The one thing that puts me right off the CS95 jacket it's that it's way too short, or what is known here in England as a 'Bum Freezer' and this is a very big issue with me, Lars. Great video and I do like your explanation of the pocket net lining in the jacket that you no longer like. If I had such a thing that I do not wear any longer, I'd take it to one of my local charity shops as a donation. Take care...

Awesome video as always Lars! Maybe they thought the mesh would help with ventilation? But seeing the mesh on the bottoms of all those pockets hurts my heart. I don't want my stuff to fall out or get tangled in the pocket! I've been eyeing the ones on Varusteleka for a while now. They look great! And the yellow one looks pretty nice, too. I knew it must've been varusteleka the moment you mentioned there being a yellow one, haha! Anywho, it'll be nice seeing you back out in the woods soon. Hopefully varusteleka ships to Russia someday. The mesh inner liner on the issue MTP windproof smock plays absolute havoc with the velcro on the storm flap - there is no dignified way to put the smock on as it _always_ gets snagged up. I share your loathing of mesh Lars, with velcro a very close second place lol!

I have to agree with your opinion on Helikon and their pockets (as well as materials). Bought a pair of UTPs in 2014 (my first pair of "tactical pants") and the pockets were so thin that they had holes in them within months from my flashlight and knife. In comparison, the Tru-Spec pants I got 6 months later are only now starting to have some wear in the pockets. Additionally, their rip stop material was about 60%cotton and 40%polyester which wasn't really ideal at all.

It makes sense if the "Boat Service" wanted the bottom of the pockets made from mesh(If that's the case), but for "land-crabs" it does not make sense at all :)

If the bottom of the pockets were made of mesh, that's not going to do anything that a single drain hole won't do, which is the initial shedding of water. Mesh dries faster than a solid piece of fabric due to its high surface area, and has the additional effect of not being a heat spot on the jacket.

For all who want the "real stuff" but in other colour (and less pattern) - my (old) DDPM-field jacket is 100% cotten and there you go with some dye it should be no problem to change the colour to your custo ;) BTW Lars, I have the old DPM and the "new" Smock in MTP and it is basically the same good stuff, just in british Multicam.

I love it. "Better is the enemy of good." "If it's not broken don't fix it.." Exactly. It's good leave it alone. I have this same Helikon in Polish camo. I too like it except for the mesh. Unless it's gloves, a cap, etc. it pokes through the bottom. Additionally the large back mesh does not close as you stated so you can't trust leaving anything in it. Roomy, yes. Good for layering, yes. Can you move in it performing tasks, yes. Just too much with the mesh.

Jacket is based on original DPM windproof issue jacket to SF from around 12 years ago (not standard CS95)...and you're right, your hands froze in the 'handwarmer' pockets. They are now standard issue (PCS uniform) to all Brit squaddies in various, improved, versions...there is a plain blue one for RAF, but very rare. The latest Helikon, which I've got in front of me in a nice shadow grey colour, is based on the newer Brit PCS version and has full fleece lining in handwarmer pockets and no mesh at bottom of bulgy pockets, though chest 'map' pockets are still mesh but not problem as used for notebooks/gloves/hat/map. Mesh designed to let out water. Best outdoor jacket in world....the benchmark as you say....as are the PCS trousers for hill walking and working outside... unfortunately in MTP cam unless you can find them in RAF blue...again rare.

Hi Lars, I've spent some time wearing the new British issue PCS (MTP) kit. Mate, they've even put mesh pockets in that too! Trouser pockets are mesh lined, and so are the smock internal pockets. They're useless! Especially when the velcro tabs on the front of the smock stick really well to mesh on the inside. They're on to a MK 2 version now, and will hopefully address it in the future. Have you ever seen the 90 pattern British jacket? Really well made, and worth looking out for.

I have the Varusteleka version, been using it for 2-3 years now so it's the first edition. Not a bad jacket. Been with me in the forest, Urban exploring, cave exploring etc and only a couple of small holes that are easy to patch up. However... I think many will agree with me, overall quality, it is not milspec. At least the first version that i got, they later added good improvements and windproof layer that mine lacks. Just too bad that they are made in China, should be made in EU at least. Problem with my jacket is that the textile is rather "delicate" but the stitches are like milspec bombproof lol... So it tears around the stitches instead of the stitches being ripped.

So, you are talking about the Särmä Windproof Smock .... It is a little bit cheaper [without post] than the Black SAS / Army Smock ... they sell them on eBay [2019] New [unissued] for about £70 [freepost to the UK] ... but like varusteleka those companies / sellers don't ship to Russia either ... hehe. I bought a Black Parka [100% Cotton] with huge lined pockets [civilian] for £1 new with tags several years ago and I've still got no issues with it ... of course there was a reason it only cost £1 ... the zip had separated from the material down 1/2 of one side in manufacture and I had to sew it up ... but that's no big deal ... It looks awesome on and looks even more awesome with a down jacket underneath [the down jacket cost me £10 BNWT inc post]. Oh, and by the way ... I just [5 minutes ago] bought a pair of Leeda Volare Breathable Stocking Foot Thigh Waders BNWT for £3.20 ... [274.20 Rubles / 3.66 euro] ... whilst watching the above video.

The mesh pockets are not pockets. They are vents. If you get overheat you open the vent so you don't have to take off the jacket.

Nobody needs fleece lined vents at the lower pockets and for the chest "vents" goes, just open the front zipper and/or the armpit vents ;) Had they just made the front storm flap close with buttons instead of Velcro, those chest pocket "vents" would not be needed at all. During the warm season I often close my jackets with the buttons instead of the zipper. Ventilates better.

Mesh fabric is very frustrating especially as pocket material. Putting key rings(or anything with sharp corners or edges) in a mesh pocket is a pretty big no-no as well, they just rip it up, like you said. Just recently cut the mesh lining out of a pair of shorts I have. That jacket looks good but the mesh pockets eliminate so much usability, it's a shame. Those are snappy looking glasses, what brand are they? If I knew how I'd make a GIF out of 9:25, hahahah. Great reaction. Soon you'll get a cure for your cabin fever, have a great weekend!

LMAO I would've loved that jacket without the mesh. I too HATE mesh!! It's VERY light duty and at least one of the cords breaks, which leaves a quarter-size hole. 😡 I never feel comfortable putting things in mesh pockets and, for the warmth issue you mentioned, it makes no sense at all. With your simple suggestions, that could easily be my favorite jacket. I'd be tempted to make those upgrades myself with solid pocket liners and add a long zipper to the top of that one long inside pocket (with solid liner installed of course). Lastly, I still use the word "retard" and "tard", despite it being a no no to most Americans, even though I'm not describing someone with disabilities. I laughed hearing you say "they went full retard" because that's what I would've said and you're usually less animated. Loved it! Haha

Hi Lars, nice jacket. It would work well here in Oregon where it doesn't go much below -7 or -8 C. Agree about the mesh though. I was wondering if you've had any experience with silk as an undergarment. I use it here with a wind proof, water repellant suit. It keeps me dry (sweat). If you haven't I could send you a set so you can try it. God Bless PS. Shooting usually helps me with cabin fever.

The only possible thing a mesh pocket could exist for is to reduce dirt buildup in in the pocket. Otherwise, I cannot think of a single use for them. A major drawback is that mesh will allow more dirt to come IN, in a dusty, windy environment. To eliminate dirt in a pocket, I simply turn the pocket inside-out to clean it. Problem solved, with no need for mesh.

Lars, the first thing that popped into my melon was with mesh pockets I'd put body warmers in a couple of them during those bone cold windy wet days we have here in Western Washington. I don't mind rain and don't mind cold but it takes an act of God and Congress to get me out in cold and wet!
