I’m recovering from leukemia. Was told early in the process that I could never fish again due to the bacteria in the water and on the fish. Considering all that I’ve been through, that was one of the most difficult things to hear. I’m in remission and (thank God) doing well. My oncologist recently gave me the go ahead to start fly fishing again. It was such wonderful news! I’ll be back in a stream the first week of May…will be thanking God for another chance at life and doing one of the things I love most in this world.

As a disabled veteran and member of the JBLM Washington State Project Healing Water's chapter, this video made me very happy to watch. It was my traumatic experiences in the military that drove me to get my degree in mental health and into my current field today. Project Healing Waters has been absolutely fanatic to me and I would recommend it to anyone; vets and volunteers alike.

This episode hit home for me, I'm a 22 year vet of the Canadian Armed Forces and a vet of the Afghanistan conflict. And I know the how fly fishing has helped me over the years. I am currently a volunteer with Hero’s Mending on the Fly. It has truly help many other vets to over their personal demons including myself. Well done on this episode!!!

Even though I never served in the forces my family has a history of serving. I have always had a great respect for the military veterans both Canadian and American service members. GODS Blessings on all who served and fought for our countries freedom. My brother and nephew live in Edmonton Alberta as they always tell me it’s GODS country and I feel blessed to have them as family!

I have a guide friend in NorCal, Jason Thatcher. He does this kind of work by himself for vets and law enforcement who have gone through trauma. Tomorrow he will guiding six officers on the Trinity River. The recently had to recover the bodies of two children. Fly fishing is an amazing form of therapy. This film was truly inspiring.

This is my hub in Idaho Falls. These fine men and women take incredible care of us. I have met many awesome people since starting in this program between 4-5 years ago. They have helped me more than I can say here. Project Healing Waters truly walks the walk. They do everything they say... and more. I highly recommend any and all Veterans to look up one of these hubs in your local area. You won't be disappointed. And always know, YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

I worked as a first mate on a charter fishing boat in the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. I started in 1995 and became a licensed captain in 2000. In 2018 I quit the charter fishing industry. Let me just tell you in my personal experience this became a job and definitely took the passion and fun out of it. I recently started going back to the type of fishing I enjoyed before I did it for a living. I also have gotten back into trout fishing, however I haven't started to fly fish just yet. Trout fishing is very therapeutic. They say if you make a career out of something you enjoy doing you never will work a day in your life. I thought that would be the case when I took up charter fishing. There's certainly more to it than just fishing. Any how you live and you learn in life.

Healing Waters......so much truth to the name chosen. I think we can all agree what the treatment of a trip to your favourite water does. The worries of the day, and the sometimes larger than us problems that we face seem to melt away, even but for a moment the water is worth visiting. What a great organization doing so much for men and women that need this kind therapy.

I didn't have the privilege to serve my country but being born and raised in Belfast in the 1970s I seen my fair share of War and its affects both physical and more long reaching mentally on service personnel and civilians , I enjoy the serenity of being on a lake or river to quietly contemplate and decompress the stresses of life daily and overcoming 2 heart attacks i enjoy every second im still around and thank the Lord for his Grace......

Thanks for this video with Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing. I've volunteered with PHWFF Augusta GA program for over 5 years. Although I'm not a vet, I can still help out teaching fly tying, casting, etc. If all service could be so much fun. So find a chapter near you.

Fly fishing was my first step in getting my life back on track from combat PTSD. You still need to put in the work through therapy and other things to heal outside of fly fishing. I love fly fishing but it’s also been my coping mechanism which doesn’t help me heal the nervous system and trauma to the brain’s fight or flight system. Check out Bessel Vander Kolk’s book the body keeps the score and see the science of what trauma does to the brain. Yoga and therapy helps!

You know what needs healing more then those vets? That poor RIVER!!!! The Snake River when I fished it in the 1970s was clear as gin! Now with all the unregulated agriculture and industry it is dying. I would not now stick my hands in that river since it is so polluted with chemicals. I noticed that there is no closeups on the fish. Do you think we are all stupid. We can see the cancer legions and poor skin growth on those fish even from twenty feet away!!!! Please be honest with your viewers and tell us what is going on with the river and what is being done to clean it up. Never have seen the Snake so green in my life. I will never fish Idaho again. The state government is now a poor steward to wildlife, rivers, and land in that state. So sad. Hemingway is rolling in his grave! Take those poor vets to a clean and healthy river to fish!

The best way to healing is to realize that they used us for wars that were started to enrich weapons manufacturing, if you can't realize this there is little hope
