Larian kept their approach to interactivity not even since original sin 1 but actually since the very first divinity (maybe even earlier, I didn't play any of their games before 2002) and it finally payed off in the biggest way possible, it's just the most unique and the most immersive that CRPG can be made in my opinion, bar none

If you've played through Disco and still don't care for it, I doubt anything will change your mind. I loved it for the voice acting, humor and writing. The premise of conflicting personality traits as the main characters of the game is just very novel and I wanted to hear everything they had to chime in with.

I honestly despised Disco Elysium, my whole experience (8 hours before I uninstalled) was abject tedium and frustration and I hated everything about it. Lord knows I tried to like it but it left me cold, the writing was nothing more than self indulgent verbal diarrhea.

You have to be a certain type of person, with certain emotions and life events, to resonate with Disco Elysium. It's an hymn to the inherent strenght of living and persevering, especially when you're more sensible than others to the blows life can throw at you or how trivial said life can get.

The lead writer, Jonas Kyratzes, also worked on the game Clash: Artifacts of Chaos which released early this year. It's not as philosophy-oriented as The Talos Principle and of different gameplay style-- and world style too, as it's set in a kind of bizarre, absurd prehistory where humans are rare and the main inhabitants are sapient monsters of all kinds. In any case, Clash: AoC's story is quite intimate, mainly about the personal journey of a martial arts hermit who temporarily takes a boy under his wing to protect him from persecution by mercenaries. There's good moments and writing, solid gameplay, *fantastic* art and music. Very much recommend looking into that one.

BG3 - I just completed a side quest by accident. I wont go into detail but I was playing with a controller on PC. When you press the left stick L3 in you can move your cursor around to look around the environment. I happened to notice what looked like a birds nest on the roof of a large building. I took two characters up there...one that had the "speak to animals"spell. And sure enough it completed a quest I had started but was not actively trying to complete. I found a torso of a clown..only to later find out I will need to find the REST of this clown for someone....things like this are what make BG3 so good.

Thank you for mentioning the over serialization of BG3. I saw an article which stated that the game's success showed that people wanted more of that, but even if you liked that stuff it was never a big part of the game or story and it was also not done to the same standard as the rest of the game. I was looking forward to rogue trader since it was announced. Unfortunately since I found out it wasn't voice acted I won't be getting it. I struggle to read for long periods of time, so if a game has too much reading I know I won't get far in it. While I don't want ai to replace voice actors it would be nice if text reading could also be treated as an accessibility setting and give the option in the menu to turn on text reading. Voice actors are going to be much better at performing the lines but to have even a standard voice reading the text would be nice.

This was an excellent video. Well thought out, well spoken, informative, actually thought provoking, and very enjoyable. Thank you. I only bought 1 game this year because I am a patient gamer, and it was Street Fighter 6. It was an excellent decision considering how Mortal Kombat 1 ended up being kind of meh, and Starfield which is what I originally wanted ended up being such hot garbage compared to its true potential, or what it seemed like it was going to be in the trailers. Street Fighter 6 is probably one of the best fighting games I ever played. It is just so accessible and polished that it's probably the first fighting game that anyone can jump into, even thouse who would not normally be intersexed in the genre. Quantum Break was probably the most enjoyable game I played this year that was on my wishlist for a while now. What was really interesting about it was how the studio incorporated a TV show directly into the game. I've never seen that before and that made it really refreshing, berceuse it was different and something that I didn't expect when the seamless transition happened. Plus seeing the late Lane Reddick (from Fringe and John Wick), and the actor who played Littlefinger in GOT was a welcome surprise. From everything I've seen and heard about Starfilend that would have probably been my biggest dissapointment if I did pick it up, and I am glad I didn't,. It's just a shame. I've been a fan of Bethesda games ever since the original; Daggerfall and original Elder Scrolls. I'm hoping to pick up Baldur's Gate 3, Allan Wake 2, and Remnant 2 sometime next year. This was overall a great year, imho only tarnished by Bethesda's and Arkane's missteps. Anyhow, thaws for the great video!

Cyberpunk was able to make a comeback, because even though it released as a buggy mess had a solid foundation and great writing. Unfortunately, Starfield’s writing is pretty bad and I’m sick of the excuse that Bethesda games are not supposed to have good writing I want my RPG to have good writing it’s just so disjointed definitely my biggest disappointment this year too.

Beth fail to show slight differences in each universe is even more of a joke considering Blade Runner game... I bet most Starfield player were not even born in 1997 so they got no idea what this game is, but in 1997 this game had slight randomizations, few dozen different little things I think, so when you played in second or third time not everything was the same, so slight changes to NPCs, your choices and in the end you had something like 10 or so endings... and it was 1997. Witcher 3 did it as well and did it pretty good, again slight differences, pseudo choices... like when you meet with Baron people in a tavern, you can be aggressive or not, doesnt change much but it creates a good illusion.

I also think the Starfield interiors look bland and unimaginitive. Mostly hardly any different to a modern office, airport, railway station etc. Not even 30 years in the future, let alone 300. Starfield has so much potential, but it all disappears as everything has been implemented so lazily. Apart from a couple of areas like Ship designer, that isn't even a necessary part of the game and hardly links to the main game at all.

Disco Elysium did not work for me twice when I was playing it on my PC. I had the same issue with it being too slow and a ton of reading. But then, I played it on the Steam deck on my bed. And it completely changed my experience of the game altogether. See the thing is, when I sit at my desk on my chair in front of a big screen with my keyboard and mouse, I am in for some serious gaming. And reading and slow pace was not something that I prefer when sitting at a desk. But, it works awesome lounging on a couch or on the bed - which is why I think this game is best enjoyed on a steam deck or a similar device. I absolutely enjoyed my playthrough on the steam deck and I will definitely start a new playthrough soon.

Im so glad watching this that someone else feels the same way about Disco Elysium. Its not a bad game but man its such an almost pretentious game to me. Like its really well written with a lot to say but all of that just lands flat when most of the dialog feels like you are in a room with a bunch of people saying a ton of really big words that dont always make sense.

for me, one of the scene that sold definitly disco elyseum as a masterpiece was the swing scene at the midle of the game. You seat with somoene who start to become a friend , I décided i kinda wanted to impress him by doing my best... You wait for a car to be accessible as the frost arround it is melting... A very quiet and melancolic atmosphere in instaled... you exchange few words... I was totaly absorbed in the now.... *big spoiler* then the frost recead enough to see the number plate. ... a numberplate you know as the player, as it's a very important sidequest for you're character. and Kim, your companion, know also verywell this numberplate... and i was starting to realise exactly as the same time as my character and kim what car it was. you're character is horrified. kim is as empathic as ever... and god i had one of the biggest laugh i ever had in my gaming experience, i couldn't stop before at least 2 minute of ininterupted laugh. but i'm pretty sure i also felt the distress of the hero discovering it was his car that he lost after being hammered. The game take itself seriously, a lot... but also know that he take itself seriously and use that to subvert your expectation, as would someone using dry humour very well. but i think it can be a dangerous bet, because if somoene start to be annoyed by the game... this kind of humour has far less chance to hit.

Cannot possibly disagree harder with the idea of starfield replacing faction quests and side quests with procedurally generated shit. While they may not be great, when I play RPGs, I sign up for fun side quests written by human beings. Procedurally generating stuff can be fun if used well, but only as a bonus. We really shouldn't be encouraging studios to start procedurally generating everything in their games, or at some point a robot might as well do it for them.
@FranklyGaming
@FranklyGaming 3 ай бұрын
I mean it more like hand written things, so basically putting faction quest level things in the procedural system, like land on planet and instead of another bandit outpost it is a massive casino with 10 hours of quests that otherwise would have been a big mission in a faction. Make everywhere you go feel amazing and a new style of game that seperates it. And makes it more focused too

If they gave us a spinoff with the same great story but just make it an action rpg instead? I think it’ll even appeal to EVEN more people.

while this is clearly a very insightful and well-put together video, it almost feels more like “here are my thoughts on the 10 biggest releases of 2023”… usually in this type of video i try to look for people talking about more niche titles i haven’t heard about but these were all immensely popular releases, even the indie one (lethal company) is insanely popular already. nothing wrong with that, but i have to imagine you played more games this year than just what’s in the top 10 sellers on steam?

@pmlite_ the likes of Clash: Artifacts of Chaos may be interesting for you to check out. Just look up some screenshots and you'll get an idea from visuals alone. Other fun releases would be (for me) Soulstice from last year and Cookie Cutter from last week. Former's a DMC-type game with a pretty good story and despite some divisive elements, it's a really good first *really big* game by its dev studio. And Cookie Cutter is a metroidvania with super strong visuals and solid gameplay, spare some annoyances (a few annoying enemy types and combat encounters, but nothing that can't be handled). Set in a sci-fi/cyberpunk planet that grew around a sapient energy source with robots fueled by human souls, and is actually super colorful. What makes it so niche is the tone. It's a kind of lawless land where, even though the story, while cheesy, is treated seriously, the devs mainly put in what they thought was cool. Stuff like frog people with sawblade polearms, a big Hindu demon with a belly mouth, a skeleton robot merchant with an afro speaking almost exclusively in dirty jokes and double entendres, and some dirty humor and jokes. That, and the main character's design. If any of these catch your interest and you choose to play them, i hope they'll be a good time to you. Or that you may simply spread the word on it.

Starfield has become one of my go to games to relax. The ‘exploration’ in Starfield is the quest and gorgeous vistas. Seriously landing on Titan at night and looking up at Jupiter in the sky… there’s nothing else like it. As a lover of Space and Sci-fi I’m very glad Starfield exists to provide such an optimistic vision of humanity’s future. CP2077 shows us a glimpse of what the future of what our society would look like with its decadence and cynicism whereas Starfield represents what I imagine people imagined the future to be prior to JFK’s assassination. Also I’m not a Bethesda fan so that works in my favour I guess since Starfield is in so many ways antithetical to what BGS has done in the past. Of course the game does have issues but I’m glad they attempted something of this scale

I think the mass effect music in the back ground kind of gives the game away. Starfield isn't Mass effect. It's Fallout. You are fighting the exact same raiders or mutants that make up 90% of the encounters, this this complaint rings very hollow. I have heard some people complain about repeated dungeons, but I've got 100 hours in the game and haven't seen a 1. Although that might be because I didn't bother with the pointless exploring and radiant quests, I played all the missions. And if you do that, you get a lot of game play, and a lot of story. It still wasn't the best game I played this year by far. TOTH, BG3, Rogue trader, phantom liberty. There were so many good RPG's this year. But just because something wasn't the best doesn't mean it wasn't good.

Whoa! Someone who has the odd opinion as I do with Mass Effect 1 being the best and Wasteland 3 being an amazing RPG. Have to sub to this man of culture before I finish ME3 on my channel, even if I disagree with your take on Alan Wake II, I thought it was lazy and derivitive. I will have to check out Lethal Company to play with friends. I also have Disco Elysium in my queue to play in 2024, so I put my hand over my ears and said lalalla during that part. I did hear from multiple people that Pizza Tower is probably the best game of the year, but I am not into speedrun platformers. Anyway, awesome presentation and pace on this review, cannot wait for your next one! Oh and my favorite game of the year is Age of Empires II Definitive edition.
