I feel like Miniac used to very deliberately ape Alton Brown's style. Pulling out illustrative charts and giving a basic overview of the physical processes in things like airbrushing. I kind of miss that, but I guess there's only so much you can go over in that style.

Paints are one of those things that you know you don't need but when you see a brand you haven't tried or a color you like but from a diffent brand you just want to try them and getting one or two isn't satisfying enough Makes me feel better about my paint racks though This was a fun video :)

I'm like the anti of this. Been painting since early 1990s. Always got rid of old ranges, when I moved on. The last time was from Vallejo (minus the metallics) to Kimera. I donated all of my working Vallejos to a friend. I now have just a few focused specials from Golden and other manufacturers. The only thing I haven't gotten rid of is original Citadel washes from the late 1990s (if memory serves), but I rarely use them now, as Kimera and Golden do it for me. It's exactly as you said, an artsy way of painting, but it works for me (I have about 35 years of painting with water colours now, so).

Two Thin Coats are my current go to for almost anything I'm painting unless I have a pro acryl equivalent. Great colors similar to citadel but in a much better dropper bottle and a better price for what you get. I have wanted to try AK paints but they are not easy to track down here in Maine.

I have the full range but have barely touched them yet. The first try was a bust so went back to ProAcryl for now. I need to sit down and work with them and learn to use them. My main goal with them was to actually use them thicker and go for more of a sketch/"painterly" style, but also need more practice for that. Also they have some amazing colours!

I cannot second this enough. Scalecolor's Artist Smooth range are the only paints I own (including Warcolours, Citadel, Golden, AK, Vallejo, and Daler Rowney) that transfer/blend so smoothly right out of the tube that it's almost like I can feel it *through* the brush (in a good way!) They're like painting with butter (again, in a good way!) Their only downside is that you can't-or at least shouldn't attempt to-airbrush them.

@@derekgarcia3069give them a try. I find the best way to use them is to 'massage' your thinner or water into the paint on wet palette. They have a lot of fine pigment and this needs to get flowing.

I have spent a lot of time and money collecting various acrylics, oils, acrylic and alcohol inks, powder pigments, pastels and acrylic paint pens whilst preparing to setup my own hobby channel. But the thing I have invested the most in is creating my own line of paints, contrast paints, washes (oil and acrylic) and effects paints. My channel will be focused on budget DIY solutions for the hobby sphere. Creating my own paints allows me to perfect and tailor my paints to my liking.

I absolutely love the AK 3rd gen, Ive been transitioning to them from Vallejo Model Color, only downside is that the dropper part of the bottles almost always cracks and makes a mess. Some vibrant colors for the new Vallejo Game Color are pretty cool, and the Xpress line although small in range, is great and dries very mat. Vallejo also has a less known range, Mecha Colors, intended for airbrush, but the steel metallics work wonder by brush, their primmers are nice too, a bit satin. You have some hidden gems too in the Vallejo Airbrush paints, such as a Black Metallic.
@nameisbad

AK 3rd gem, Kimera and scale 75 are all people need. I legit vouch by that. AK 3rd gen is like other stuff but ten times better. kimera is just very solid for what it does and scale 75 is different yet excellent when mastered, beyond anything imo. (scalecolor i'm talking about mainly).

Scalecolor heavy body paints are actually my favourite mini paints. I do a lot of colour mixing and they have the best magenta I've found. I'm honestly at the point where Id rather thicker paints. It just works better for how I paint. and for airbrushing I still go back to army painter paints.

I feel like I would get decision fatigue when trying to paint with this many paints. Which is why I've given away 90% of my paints. I kept my inks and artist paints for airbrushing, and a set of craft paints for dry brushing or terrain making. All of my other paints are artist oil paints. Oil paints have made me enjoy painting because acrylic paints were not super fun (if you aren't having fun painting, try oils. they are so much fun to paint with).

I think I still have a kidney left...

Fellow paint hoarder here. I find myself migrating towards the Scale 75 Artist colours more and more. Yes, they have to be thinned down, but BUT!. If you are like me and only have about 30min per day for painting, they hold up SUPER well on the wet palette. I load my palette for the week on Monday, and by Sunday, they are just the right consistency for those final glazes. No other brand comes close in this regard. It also helps that they mix well due to the limited pigments.

I love using ScaleColor Artist paints. They have amazing matte finish, lovely colours, and they mix nicely. And the biggest advantage for me is that I don't have to shake them. I injured my hand a few years ago and if I overwork it, it hurts and I can't paint. Not having to shake bottles (and things like vibrating shakers are not any better for me) extends the time I can paint by a lot. So I almost exclusively paint with the ScaleColor Artist paints and don't mind having to thin them down. It helped me learn what consistencies I like for painting.

The biggest upside to tube paints is that you don't get air into your paint when used. Bottle paint will dry in the pot faster and faster the less paint remains. If i had the option all my paints would come in tubes since most paints needs to be thinned anyways.

Though I do love the Vallejo Express colours: Cardinal Purpple, Gloomy Violet, Plasma Red and Mystic Blue and my Citadel Garaghak's Sewer and Black Legion are always at hand. I'm also a big fan of Reaper's Polished Bone, Aged Bone, Blonde Traid set and Fair Flesh traid, the last of which works great with GW's Seraphim Sepia. I am sure you have enough suggestions about cool projects, but I think it would be awesome if you made a series of videos on a duel of some sort (inquisitor vs demon or some other rival) where you spend a video make the two fighting and then a video describing the painting process (especially OSL for the two different models with their different base tones and textures reflected from the same light source). Just a thought.

Question about the so-flat, I think some of their colors, like yellow from the box set, use toxic pigments. Have you ever seen this as being a problem for anyone beyond maybe avid-brush-lickers? Like for playing and etc.

I was a pure citadel guy for years. it's what I learned on and knew colors for. but my flgs has ak and man it's become my go to. so smooth, so matte, but coverage is great.

This was a great video. I also have a bit of a problem being mostly allin on ProAcryl and the Scalecolor Artist Range (plus Metal and Alchemy now, lol). Ive actually been planning tobgrab the AK Pastel and Fluo boxes to use primarily for highlights and such...also maybe theur metals and you and Scott soeak so highly of them. Hmm...guess i have a problem too!

You have Citadel hexpads, the new version, with the fancy latcht on top. That still is the new version of Citadel paints for me. I have the full collection of hexpads with screw tops.

I enjoy collecting paint as well. Probably what kicked off my desire for more paints was finding a great deal of the entire Reaper Core Colors range about four years ago. Since then added the following ranges: Reaper Bones, AK Gen 3, Scale Artists and Instant Colors and new Vallejo Game Color and Express paints. Have many from other ranges like Citadel, ProAcryl and SoFlat and about 100 oils.

Really great stuff as always. Between this and your latest "cleaning house" vid, it's great to learn from someone who has tried soooo many paints out there. I've started looking at AK and Pro Acryl only, and it's overwhelming! You mentioned in this vid that you could probably get away with 25-30 paints from AK and be set...care to make a vid about those 25-30 paints? Amazing stuff sir!

You know damn well we're all buying paints we don't need to fill the void when we don't have the time or energy to paint with what we already have. That ending question is just a trick to drive more engagement.

My LGS thankfully stocks p3 paints and the local hobby store just started taking in AK, so perhaps I shall increase my range there with this recommendation :) I also love the Pro Acryl Transparents.

I agree with your stand on AK interactive. Most consistent major paint line in the market. I adore their intense colours. I'll try the pastel tubes then. Cheers

When I received my Wave 1 TTC paints, I gave my corresponding Citadel colours to a friend of mine. Waiting on Wave 2 to arrive now.

I only have one paint set and honestly it gets tiring mixing colors sometimes, but I really like not having to go through a million different bottles to find what I want. It's also nice to know exactly how a paint is going to behave when I use it

Nice, I use a mix of Vallejo model color, Pro-Acryl, Citadel contrast, Valleoj metal color, Daller-Rowley inks, and a little Citadel.

I think the only thing to note with more professional acrylics is they need to be watered down more or maybe use a medium.

Great vid! Any way you could detail your thinning process for the 3rd gen ak colors? I love brush painting them but ive had issues i dont run into with other brands when i try to airbrush them.
