The aluminium-body X150 shape Jaguar XKR is a massively popular car on the used market - and for good reason. Few other vehicles offer such a good all round GT car package for their prices. But with an array of different XK models to choose from, picking the right one for you can be tricky. 4.2? 5.0? RS? Base model?
Well, in this instalment of Best & Worst, I'm bringing my personal experience of Supercharged 2007 XKR 4.2 to the table, along with the most notable best and worst points about the car from my time spent with it...
★ My used buying review of the XKR: • Jaguar XKR 4.2 Review ...

I have a 2008 XKR (carbon/aluminium trim, not wood). It remains beautiful and is, somewhat surprisingly, one of the most reliable cars I've ever had. At 13 years old it is still my day-to-day drive.

@@p2p104 I sold the car about four months ago but only because we needed a second family-sized vehicle. (I replaced it with a Jaguar F-Pace, which is brilliant.) When I sold the XKR she was in fine condition -- everything worked well. The people I sold it to are friends of mine; they upgraded the entertainment system and continue to drive it everyday and they are happy. Although I am super happy with my F-Pace, every time I see an XKR on the road I get a little wistful. I can honestly say that I would probably have kept it if I had space to park three cars.

I own a 2008 XKR, it has been a great car, and fun to drive. It can be sedate, or incredibly fast and nimble when you need it. You are correct about the community and forums. People supportive and helpful. You are correct about the window trim lol. I had some electrical gremlins in the screen, and also cruise control. Someone in a forum told me that even though the battery seems fine, starts etc., it may need to be replaced. I looked and the battery was the original, many years of service but old, pretty impressive. Replaced it and cruise control works, and screen problem stopped. Turns out that this car is very sensitive to battery voltages and amperes. After a year of the new battery, no gremlins. What would have made this car perfect outside, a real stainless mesh grill!

As an XKR driver I confirm these obeservations as correct. I have to say though that I haven’t had any gremlins (yet). I have had so many compliments for the car. It is a real beauty, good looking car. And that is also a part of the fun of owning an XKR.

Ive been hunting a XKR for about 8 years. A huge part of that was watching your videos over and over lol. Now that I have a 2011 XKR I have to post my biggest issue has been electrical battery issues. I didnt do the "double lock" and parked the car in the garage for a week and when I went to start it, it was dead. 250 bucks for a new battery and I am very careful about plugging in the CTEK when its parked. The second issue with the car is even with fuse 19 pulled you just can't enjoy the car as much as folks around you. When I can get some spirited driving going and downshifting I get the pops, cracks, and growls and I LIVE FOR IT. But since I'm usually in stop and go traffic I cant really get the car to do what I want. She is so tame in traffic. I love this car so much. One of the best things I've ever done but I agree on the electrical and sound.

I fell in love with Jaguars at 5 years old when I got a lift home from school in my mates mum's MK2. It was an experience I've never forgotten. It took many many years before I owned a Jaguar however, I'd had BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, Ford's, Vauxhalls, Rovers, Triumphs etc and they were all alright in their way. I was turned off by the S type and X Type, as I still remembered the XJS, the MK2 and the E Type. I did like the XJ40 though, but all out of reach for me at the time. I dipped Mt toe into the world of Jaguar with 3.0ltr petrol V6 premium luxury XF. It had the walnut, cream leather etc and when I test drove it, I had the same feeling I did when I was 5. I was home. I've just sold that car to a very happy buyer and now have an X351 XJ 3.0ltr supercharged portfolio. I absolutely love that car. It's next level. The thing I've grown to love about Jags is, as you said, the community. It is this community that had fostered my love for Jags and been extremely supportive. I belong to the jaguarforum.com and the people on it are ace. We went for a weekend away as a club and the people were friendly, interesting and it was a great time. I can't imagine that happening with many other marks. I use Swallows Jaguar specialist who have been beyond reproach, they really understand not only the cars but the investment the owners have in them. It sounds strange but you're never alone when you own a Jag. And on top of that, when you walk out of your house you get that sense of pride, as you take in the sheer beauty and lines of the car, knowing it's yours.

10:30 fit/finish - I hear you. I have a 2002 XKR convertible, first time I flip down the drivers sunvisor I notice the fabric it is covered in doesn't quite extend far enough to be hidden under the vanity mirror housing, so there is this little gap I see each time showing the foam underneath. I suspect a german or japanese or south korean car company would have rejected that part.

I have come to the conclusion that a 400hp car is too powerful for British roads. Too much traffic, not enough room on the roads and the condition of the roads in general is very poor. The roads in Scotland are much better. In second gear you break the speed limit in a few seconds hitting 70mph no problem. Mine is only the X100 4.2 car so I can't think what the 5.0 would be like. It's nice to have but at the same time you can't really use the power without breaking the speed limit. It would be nice to have an open top old car like a Lotus 7 type vehicle to go with the Jaguar to refresh yourself every now and then. I pay less in tax because it's a later car. I think I pay £350 or so. I do love the car though, I plan on keeping it for a very long time. Would be nice if Jaguar had designed the body better because rust is a bit of a problem. The X150 is probably a lot better in this regard as it's made from aluminium so should rust slower or less. The Jaguar community is amazing, such helpfull people everywhere on the internet. Great forums and great KZbin community. I'm not in any clubs though.

I agree with your points and I bought my XKR as I was driving between UK and Switzerland on a regular basis , which is where this car and my previous XJ6 really come into their own. The road tax is very high and I think I may use my 1959 Tax exempt MG convertible during the summer with its insurance at only 100 pounds and rethink the Jaguar for next winter. There is too much salt on potholes on UK roads. Maybe it is time for me to reluctantly sell my 2005 4.2 XKR. I know I will regret it.

I find the same with the F Type in terms of sound; under normal driving, it's way too soft - sounds like my Lexus in city driving ! Even with the valves open, it must be revved +3500 rpm to really get that F1 roar. I have no problems with the interior fit and finish. Regarding the Vantage, I am most unimpressed with the current design (interior and exterior) Vantage and its trading on the name. Just getting in and out of traffic with ease with the F Type confirms that other drivers truly appreciate the elegance and beauty.

The XKR is solidly on my radar for the next purchase. My 2012 XFR was hands down the most brilliant car I’ve ever had the pleasure of owning. The smooth Jag engine while an absolute beast from a power perspective was smooth, balanced and refined...well behaved even. Super reliable throughout my ownership. Only issue was a parking sensor, which was easily repaired in the driveway. You can’t beat the Jag for looks, comfort and style and the XKR even more so. Not your grand-dad’s Jag by a long shot!

@@scottynield837 Not at all. I’ve owned a lot of cars over the years. I hesitated at pulling the trigger on the pre-Tata Jags because of the reputation. The research on Jags built by Tata Motors showed however that they are among the best vehicles on the road. Certainly at the top in the luxury brands and approaching the reliability of the Toyota and Honda. The 4.2 and 5.0 motors with proper care should last hundreds of thousands of miles. They are rock solid performers.

Enjoyed your vid, I have a IRR 14’ xkr dynamic, Owned it for 5years, I can’t tell you how many heads spin when I take it out, people think it’s an exotic🤷‍♂️, the only issue so fa was w the head unit not turning on at start up, so I had no Hvac, radio, or seat fuctions, I shut the car off , turn it back on and it works, annoying gremlin, but I get over that quick everytime I walk away from it and look back at it and smile. If you drive a car that you don’t look back at when walking away, then you’re not an enthusiast.

I agree that the road tax on the XKR is not logical and does not compare with some other cars. I don't understand how they came up with that tax bracket.

A mechanic in Texas is offering me a 2000 xk8 for 3,000 bucks. It needs a new engine, and only has 55,000 miles. Is this a good purchase for a 32 year old wanting a Jaguar? Any comments help
@HSGAutomotive
@HSGAutomotive 3 жыл бұрын
To be honest I'd say no, since you can pick up one of those XK8's for $6-8k in moderate to good condition anyway without needing a whole new engine. By the time you're done you'll end up paying a similar amount to fix it up properly with Jag parts + the time involved.

If you really want to know what expensive road tax is, just come to Ireland and get any car above 2L older than 2008. It is 950e a year for my E46 320ci which is just a 2.2L, I only tax it 6 months a year though. Don't want to imagine what the XKR's road tax would be here haha. You are probably looking at +1500e (+1300£).

Would be £600 now if I still had it, but even crazier is how the split tax between years works. This 2007 being £600, but a 2005 Flying Spur I had was £340, and a 2002 Evo 7 was £295. Tax here makes little sense

@@HSGAutomotive in the market for buying a 08 right now.. I've heard mixed things about the maintence cost, some say it's ridiculously high, others say the biggest thing is the tires and stuff of that nature. Is general maintenance cheap and you don't get into expensive territory unless it's something major? Or how does it work
@HSGAutomotive
@HSGAutomotive 3 жыл бұрын
@@elmerfapp7804 It varies to be fair. I had my S/C belt and pulley changed out due to some squeaking, and the parts (a new belt and pulley) only cost me £55. On the other hand, my rear brake line corroded over time, and a simple replacement one was £90 from Jaguar directly, not to mention that they 'forgot' to add it to their order sheet the first week, and then sent the wrong part the following week. So it depends mostly on A: where you source the parts from, and B: who works on it. I never use specialists, and if you know a trusted mechanic or even have some technical skills yourself you can keep the costs down.

@@HSGAutomotive so you recommend going to a 3rd party shop or directly to jaguar themselves? Also is it wise to buy an 08 as my new main car/daily driver? I don't drive a ton , so I won't be putting alot of miles but still a decent bit. If something did go wrong down the line would it come back to fuck me with thousands of dollars in repairs or is that unlikely from your experience? I really like the car and the 08 is in my price range, but i just wanna make sure it's not gonna be a money pit
