My mom's commentary, in order: "I remember Tokyo Mew Mew! A couple of my clients (my mom is a therapist) liked it back in the day. I hope they let the ballerina and wolf girl kiss." And then she laughed as I paused, looked up what she was talking about, and found out that there is in fact a Mew Mew who does ballet poses and she is in fact in love with a wolf-eared teammate. "I don't like that everyone who mentions One Piece says it requires binge-reading or binge-watching. How long IS this thing?!" "Trust me, you don't want to know." "I'm watching this anime. It reminds me of art school." "I'm adopting this boy. He needs support and affection." "I'm adopting this girl." "Mom, she has a dad and a nanny." "So she needs a mom, is what you're saying." "I would've preferred a battle to my graduation. Ever worn a graduation robe when it's 105F out? I hated it. Fire might've been cooler." "They both remind me of your Aunt Judy." "Why?!" "I don't know. Something about anime girls with guns just makes me want to call her and see how she's doing." "I'm not adopting these two, but I'm making them a lasagna. They look overworked. Poor kids." "We're not going to think about what it says about the animators that they made a hot mom the main character can legally have sex with. They're not my patients, I'm not obligated to help them." "He's kind of hot." "MOM!" "He wants to help people and he worked himself to death! I'm allowed to admire that." "You are literally MARRIED." "Your dad has Seven of Nine, I can have - what's the anime nerd term for this? Boywife?" "NO. No, it's - it's husbando." And then I silently took 10000 psychic damage from this conversation. "Oh, anime has soaps? I loved soap operas in the 80's! This is neat, you and your friends can watch your soap together like my friends and I did." "This is my new soap."

Uncle from Another World would probably be best described as Post-Isekai. Since it’s about a man who awakens from a coma brought to him by Japan’s Most Wanted Isuzu transport truck with magic powers and a sincere sense of early 90s nostalgia, I’d definitely put it there.

I'm genuinely impressed by Lycoris. The main character is an optimist and pacifist yes, but even 3 episodes in it's clear that those ideologies do not come at the cost of realistic expectations for the world around her. She's skilled in both battle and strategy and demonstrates clear understanding of the field she's in. And she uses those skills to thrive despite refusing to kill. Much more well adjusted and wise than I was expecting. Her deuteragonist could also easily fit into a tired anime trope -- that of the emotionless, violent lancer -- but instead shows us her hand early on and wears her heart on her sleeve when the situation calls for it. Yes she's adjusted to the life of an assassin, but that doesn't make her cold or heartless like others in the world think of her. Together these two make a well-balanced, fun to watch duo. Their personalities and ideologies bounce off each other beautifully and I can't wait to watch more.

It's interesting to see an isekai protagonist who was actually good at something before getting isekai'd, and brings it over into his new life. Kinda like 'world's best assassin' from a couple seasons ago. Also, comparing it to 'drug store in another world' is the perfect showcase of why you should consider intended demographics in your reviews. Yes, they are both isekai about a guy running a pharmacy, but 'drug store' was clearly aimed at children, so bashing it for simple writing and humour aimed at 6-year-olds kind of defeats the point of a recommendations video.

Uncle from another world really does have an interesting approach to the genre. Lots of good jokes with a fun, generation gap theme in how the uncle and nephew try to connect and look out for each other. The flashback approach to the fantasy story lets the nephew act as a representation for the audience, as he loses his mind at all the events that the uncle is blatantly missing. It has a real melancholic feel to it sometimes as well, since you know there isn't likely to be a proper happy ending to the uncle's story; he already left that world behind when we first meet him. Not to mention you often get the feeling that he's genuinely traumatized by the things he's been through. There's potential for a lot of heart in this comedy. Also raptors. Mustn't forget the raptors.
@Captain1nsaneo2 жыл бұрын

@PlaySA2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's the hit show of the season for me with no contest. The thing I like about Ojisan is that you know he will never change. He spent what, 17 years in that other world and none of his experiences there were enough to fundamentally change his outlook on life. And even if those beautiful other land girls might've thought they loved him, maybe what he gave them was what they really needed? Would they actually want to continue to be with Ojisan, I doubt it. So it does have some character depth for sure, although the art and comedy proves the biggest selling point.
@vigilantScrivener2 жыл бұрын
A month out it feels like not many people are talking about it. I may just be in the wrong circles, but for me even though it is a comedy, under the surface I sense a poignant message about how we can help others process their struggles that we are so often oblivious to in ourselves. Uncle missed all the good things in the other world because he was surrounded by many terrible events (some of his own creation, many I imagine are not) and it’s hinted that the nephew’s family fell apart because of uncle’s coma and he struggled to find his footing in high school so both struggle to reciprocate the care they receive from others. In a lot of ways, though not as obvious as Violet Evergarden, it feels like a show about processing traumatic events and readjusting to life after through the lens of comedy.

@@nicefifteen8431 ahhh... it's mostly just a fish out of water comedy; the uncle is a fish out of water in modern japan, and his isekai adventures were a giant fish out of water horror fest; basically while the uncle got a terrible lot in the other world, he also was completely genre unsavvy, so a lot of the good fortune he got, which would typically be part of some sort of wish fulfillment isekai fantasy he simply passed by, ignored or ran away from not recognizing the "standard" isekai tropes of tsundere and yandere harem girls hunting him down. His treatment of the sweet but tragically tsundere elf girl is comedy gold, as he often takes her 100% literally, and misses every single effort she makes to help, love or even associate with him (to say nothing for the comedy gold with the yandere ice sword/girl)

I’ve been reading Made in Abyss for the last 4 years or so and I FINALLY got around to watching the anime this week. Binged all of Season 1 over the course of two nights and I’m waiting for my blu rays of the movies to come in before I start Season 2. I’m SO excited, because that Narehate Village arc is… seriously something else. Thank you for this video, perfect timing. Some of these will surely keep me occupied in the meantime. That vampire night one in particular sounds right up my alley. Update: Just watched the first episode of Call of the Night, and yeah. This show gets it. I've been the nocturnal type my whole life; when I was Ko's age and younger, I'd stay up all night reading or playing video games. As an adult, I used to work in a 24-hour office where I worked from 6pm to 6am, and I loved the hours. These days, I sleep during the day, and I take evening classes at school. I stay up all night every night, and now and then I'll go to IHOP or some other 24-hour place at 2am just to chill and read comics. There's this beautiful, intangible freedom the night brings. Everyone else is asleep and it's like you have the whole world to yourself. The moon, the lights, the colors, it's perfect, and this show represents all of that so well. As a bonus, Call of the Night has a sexy vampire manic pixie dream girl with tummy who looks like Himiko Toga from HeroAca? Nazuma new best girl. I hope the rest of the season can keep it up, because Episode 1 delivers so hard.

Also helps that it is an original story, and it is so tightly written and storyboarded. The conspiracy, worldbuilding, and character development are all interlaced across the episodes seamlessly. The world feels alive and lived-in before the audience starts observing it, and it is frequently making callbacks to things we saw episodes ago. My favorite example of this is seeing Chisato shoot with her pistol held very close to herself in across all the episodes including the 1st, and by the 3rd, she's scolding a fellow Lycoris in a training exercise by grappling her and taking her weapon from her for extending her arms out too far. The John Wick comparison is a fair one to make because there's a lot of realistic technique backing the handwave stuff. All beautifully animated.

Okay, so I’ve not heard of Lycoris Recoil, but the bullets aren’t as dumb as they seem on the surface. In theory, frangible rounds could both penetrate armor and be less lethal. A little bit of unobtanium handwaving with the binding, and you could sinter some UHMW polyethylene or something similar into a projectile that will pierce soft body armor or thin metal but explode harmlessly on contact with flesh. There are already lethal variants that do something similar, though they penetrate into the target before the binding releases. The real trouble would be holding a polymer together long enough to punch through armor; it’s not nearly as dense as metal and won’t sinter in the same ways. Still, it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility.
@molluscumlore2 жыл бұрын
What I noticed too is that it isn't armor, it's the car door of a generic white van. Still a little odd that something that pierces a car door is non-lethal and non-piercing, but given how thin a lot of car panels seem to be currently (I imagine lightweight is better gas mileage) and I think many are plastic or fiberglass now too, it really doesn't seem too farfetched. Especially considering they seem to be designed to knock you off your feet despite dissipating against actual armor or skin, so they have to have some good bit of force behind them. I'm no physics expert to be sure, but I also think piercing hard/tensioned material like a car door could with some material tweaking be easier for a fast bullet than a soft, malleable material like flesh or cloth. Like the difference between trying to cut loose plastic vs. tensioned cloth. Still a weird decision on the animators part, but I guess either a line got crossed with the writer's or there was supposed to be some kinda reloading scene for us to notice a purposeful switch that jut didn't happen or get emphasized enough.
@Kalatash2 жыл бұрын
I vaguely recall seeing something in the early 00s about a bullet technology that was able to pierce through personal metal armor plates but couldn't penetrate drywall because it reduced itself to sand when it tried to. Of course, this wasn't meant to be a "less lethal" type of round as it worked like hollow point rounds on drugs when travelling through flesh, but the concept of some sort of pullet that is able to punch through a car door but not penetrate skin isn't completely unheard of.
@gatling2162 жыл бұрын
@@Kalatash Frangible rounds. Basically, powdered metal gets mixed with a binder and formed into a projectile under heat and pressure. Think of them like hollowpoints on steroids. They dump all of their energy into the target rather than passing through. Different combinations of materials and binders yield different results, and I have heard of less lethal versions. Still feels like getting hit by a fastball from a Major League Baseball pitcher, and can absolutely kill if they hit the wrong place from too close a distance, but in general they behave like they do in the show, minus penetrating cover. That’s the part that’s hard to swallow.
@gatling2162 жыл бұрын
@@molluscumlore The average 9mm projectile carries something like 400-500 ft-lbs of energy, depending on a few different factors. While that’s not spectacular in absolute terms, it’s more than enough to get the job done in most situations. After watching the show, I’m fairly certain my frangible round hypothesis is what the writers had in mind, that is to say, powderized high density polymer compressed into a projectile with a binder that releases on impact with soft tissue. There’s more than enough energy there to go through sheet metal and clothing. The trick is to find a binder that can hold the projectile together while it punches through said sheet metal and clothing, while also allowing the projectile break up when it hits soft tissue. It would have to be a near instant release, or the bullet would penetrate into the target and cause significant damage.

This and the replies genuinely make wonder if you work in a plastic factory. I once worked somewhere that rented office space inside a plastic business and I'd read the plastic business magazines when I wasn't on the clock and boy, howdy, I didn't understand everything. Like, at all. But I wanted to. Like, what does all this plastic terminology mean? Why do you need a color sorter and remover? Where do the colors go when they're removed? That is just the tip of the iceberg.

I can't believe we've never had a post-isekai like Uncle From Another World yet, it seems like such a simple concept and yet a genuinely interesting premise to watch
@spiritnova422 жыл бұрын
While it's a completely different tone, you might want to look up Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero. The basic premise is that getting isekaied has become so common that the ones who make it back are sent to a school to basically end up as special forces. The main character is interesting in that he's confident and takes no bullshit. He's also a womanizer who has the unexplained ability to remove a lady's undergarments while she's still dressed. Whether you're into that last part or not, he's an oddly refreshing MC considering how isekai MCs tend to be the socially awkward guy who somehow manages to attract a bunch of women regardless. Admittedly, despite taking place in Japan, it does end up feeling similar to other "magic school" anime, but it does technically count as post-isekai. Of course, if you meant your comment in the sense of "isekaied person comes back to normal, modern day Japan with powers intact", then this wouldn't really count, and I agree it's odd we haven't really seen it before now. Uncle From Another World might very well start a trend if it does well.

Looks like Yazi had fun. I recently found/became aware of some series I'm hoping get the anime treatment soon. At the top of that list is Soara and the Monster's House, currently only a Manga/Webcomic; the series is a bit of a subversion of the typical Fantasy setting you get with Japanese media. T start things off, the primary protagonist, the aforementioned Soara, is an orphan trained in the art of combat since she was a young child for the express purpose of slaying the Demon King/Ruler of Monsters but literally loses out on that job/duty in the first chapter because of a treaty signed by said Demon King and the ruler of humanity a few months before this start of the series, she then meets a trio of dwarf architects (they are literally called dwarves in series but I suspect only one of them is an actual dwarf, another one is a gnome, and the last of the trio is probably a Halfling but I appreciate them all just being called "dwarf" and that way it also serves as a call back to an arc in Aaron Williams's Nodwick, go read it online, where Dwarves, Gnomes and Halflings are actually the same race the the distinction between the races is fabricated as part of massive scam to a researcher of racial histories that was paying exorbinant sums for the comprehensive histories of each individual race he collected histories of) that are very talented at building structures to the needs and wants of basically every monster they take on a client but they also lack anything resembling combat ability, Soara follows them at a distance for a few chapters, which they are well aware of because her stealth skills seem to be very lacking but pretend to not notice since she's not actually causing problems, before officially joining the crew as their bodyguard and combat expert, which is good because sometimes you need someone like that when you are literally wandering around the territories of who knows how many monsters on quests for new homes from different monsters. As you might have guessed from that summary, the series focuses less on combat and more on exploration and worldbuilding, there are those combat moments but they are few and far between.

Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer is one of, if not my favorite manga of all time, and its writing alone should carry it assuming they don't screw anything up with the adaptation on that side of things, BUT the animation quality/budget is soooo bad it hurts.

Geoff talked about it on twitter. It's not on the list most likely because the animation quality is a disaster. I fucking love this manga, I just can't watch the 2nd episode, it's unbearably low quality.

Dang that Yofukashi no Uta and FLCL comparison is super spot on. It definitely gives that exact vibe with even the themes too. Just much more tame.

Woah, I totally missed the launch of Call of the Night. I heard that it got an anime adaptation but got blindsided by it coming out this summer. Same with Devil is a Part Timer´s new season.
