The Best Apple Pie With Claire Saffitz | Dessert Person
I love an elaborate dessert on occasion, but after lots of trial and error, I’ve learned over time that when it comes to apple pie, simplest is always preferable. For Thanksgiving, what I want underneath a scoop of vanilla ice cream is a slice of buttery, cinnamony pie that tastes of apples and features a variety of textures. This pie, with an oat crumble topping rather than a top crust of lattice, checks all of those boxes.

Claire, the flavor of this apple pie was incredible! It will be my new go-to. It set just right, no soggy bottoms, and the sweet/tart/spice was well balanced and allowed the taste of apple to shine! Crumble is always delightful on an apple pie. It is just the BEST way to make apple pie. I will never double crust again. This is so delicious. I ramp up my apple pie by adding cranberries - I like the tart contrast-, and a bit more spice (she is a bit low on the spice, in my opinion) I add cardamom, more cinnamon, allspice, ginger and then cover it with the crumble. I will try her pie crust. I don't think you can ever over spice the apples. That's me, though. Apples can take a lot as can cranberries. It just makes it more amazing. Seriously. I live on an orchard, with some of the original pippin tart apples from Johnny Appleseed (or John Chapman if you follow history), and you must use TART apples, like Granny Smith or pippins or other green apples. Don't go to sweet apples like Macintosh... (I would like her to comment about that). They aren't baking apples. Apples, like all fruits, caramelize in the oven, so you need to take that into account that they do that while baking, so they get sweeter in the oven.

I really love Claire and this team more with each video. Claire with the chickens! And the face when Vinny told her people reported using apple cider vinegar instead of apple cider in her apple tart, lol.

This is the best apple pie I've ever made or tasted! I recommend a larger pebble size crumb, mine was a fine crumb and I wish I'd had more to sink my teeth into. Thanks, Claire!

These videos are great to watch multiple times. Not only because you will learn more / absorb more of what Claire is teaching, but because you might have missed one of the visual easter egs from our dear editor(s) :)

Vanilla is key. I started adding that to fruit pies a couple year ago and it makes a huge difference in flavor.

@@TheBereangirl I don't live in the US, but in Europe so we have different varieties. We grow Renet Burhardta. They're pretty tasty on their own.

@@arnoldspirags9995 Sounds lovely. We have two Dorset trees, which I believe hail from England; even an EIN Shemer from Israel! We have also managed to squeeze in some of the standard apple varieties that are available in our box stores in our small yard thanks to espalier and semi dwarf varieties. Enjoy your harvest!☺️

Hi! May I know the size of pie pan did you use? Thank you
@hellomarinasunshine
@hellomarinasunshine 6 ай бұрын
@@giridharwyne I used a 9-inch. Originally, I used less of the apples, because my pan seemed like it was more on the shallow end. But they cook down so do use what you can, and don't expect to use all the crumble either.
