Taking a look at what I believe is the greatest Batman and Robin movie ever made--- maybe more so Robin than Batman.
Batman : Under The Red Hood.
The evolution of the character going from heroic sidekick to vengeful anti-hero.
This whole movie is just a character study of the second Robin , Jason Todd.
We watch the character go from boy to man--- as he looks to take on his old friend / new foe.
Can The Dark Knight defeat The Former Boy Wonder --- or will he come to regret those trainings ?
This is the life, death, and resurrection of both Jason Todd and Red Hood.

I always assumed in the comics that people knew Dick became Nightwing because of the Teen Titans. You see Robin running around with the Titans one day and then next you have Nightwing take his place as the leader of the Titans. Meanwhile Batman has a new Robin a few months later. Plus their style of combat. Dick is more acrobatic and incorporates more gymnastics whereas Jason is more street due to not having a acrobatic background. He got the basics from Batman but it's not something he was taught and practiced since he was a child.

Nah there were rumors of an auto-dialer being used to add fake votes in favor of his death. Dennis O'Niel (editor of batman when death in the family happened) said this. @Frogman1212

@@dustincongello5802 The vote being that close proves they didn't hate him though. Besides, Dennis O'Niel has publicly stated that he doesn't like Robin, and he and Jim Starlin (writer of death in the family) both wanted batman to be a solo act. Dennis O'Niel was even the guy who in 1970 had Dick turn 18 and leave Bruce. There's really no evidence of fans hating Jason, especially if you read the letter's page in the back of those old comics, where they'd say positive things about him. If anything, it was probably an inside job by Denny and Jim Starlin, Denny probably using an autodialer to rig the vote in his favor, after all, he has said with no source that the autodialer was a floating rumor. Dennis O'Niel is a hippy so this kind of action wouldn't be beyond him. Salazar Knight has some great videos about him and Starlin, where he points out how out of character jason acts in Death in the family's first 3 issues, which would have made readers dislike him in the first place. Comic books from Marvel and DC are generally written 6 months in advance so this easily could have been planned by Starlin and O'Niel to keep sails from dropping while also killing a beloved character they didn't like.

The Nightwing Problem isn't just an issue here, it's been a continuous problem in most of his DC animated movie appearances. In son of Batman, despite subduing Damian he still clearly took more visible damage then is jobbed out by Damian later. In Batman vs Robin he's sidelined again like here. In Bad Blood he's the only one of the heroes who doesn't win his one-on-one fight in the climax (cause heaven forbid you let Dick go over Bruce, even when the latter is brainwashed and presumably fighting against it as he fight Nightwing, no keep that Batman Hogan booking going), In Batman and Haley Quinn he barely does anything, loses to Harley in a one-on-one fight and then nearly gets sexually assaulted, In JL vs TT he literally phones in his role, In Hush he gets infected by Scarecrow's fear gas and loses to Catwoman then is out of the movie (I think they gave him huntress's role in this scene in the comic, instead of given it to Batgirl who they gave Huntress's earlier scene to, so she shows up to do nothing too), and in Apokalips War he's killed like 80% of the cast but as a final indignity gets to be the one they throw int he Lazarus Pit to revive and he goes Crazy. I think Judas Contract is the only time he gets to looks good by being the only member of the team who was able to escape Deathstroke. But outside of that, real stellar run for the original Boy Wonder.

The criminals know that batman has had four robins because: 1. They are all similar ages when they acted as robin. You mention this as a point against this but surely most people would be smart enough to figure out you cant be a teenager for 20 years. 2. They look similar BUT NOT THE SAME. Damien has darker skin. Tim has a red and black costume. 3. Criminals they've met on the street recognising them. Riddler, for example would fairly easily figure out that Batman has swaped robins a few times. It's not to hard to assume he would tell others, who would then tell others, until it's common news.

Then to add that Nightwing fights and acts the same way Robin did. Moreover, after those couple of years Robin suddenly shows up again. However, Robin is now acting different and fighting different. Plus, it’s been years since he disappeared and now that he’s back, he’s younger and not older. How is that possible? Vee is giving himself too much credit. Criminals ain’t that dumb. [+]

RE: Everyone knowing Nightwing was Robin. I bet Deathstroke told everyone. There’s been a few “villains hang out together at seedy bars” conceits, like in Identity Crisis. Likely someone found out like that, especially if they paid him enough. Plus, Joker killed Robin, then Robin was still around, so I wouldn’t think it would be too hard to extrapolate that their ages stay somewhat the same, and perhaps Nightwing was the first Robin, and from there, rumors spread.

That was also what went through my head when Vee raised that point. I mean, in the film it was obviously done for exposition purposes, but as we've seen countless times, Batrogues henchmen talk with each others; just listen to their gossip in the Arkhamverse games ^^ Or the currently still going on *Batman:Reptilian* by Garth Ennis; (he's in my top 5 favorite comic book authors, so even if he isn't the best at writing Batman I'm still buying this title ^^ we're currently 4 issues in) *Point is* , no spoilers don't worry guyz but we do learn lots of stuff about the Gotham based supervillains' mooks and their habits. They're all pretty much acquainted, as many have worked for several crime bosses over the years, so when the big guys meet to discuss how to get rid of the Bats, they And then there have been quite a few villains who have learned stuff about Nightwing, from crooked cops to wannabe vigilantes, or former crooks like Harley Quinn who could have babbled about Jason Todd getting kille before reforming. (as Batman once said, it isn't hard to *guess* that he is Bruce Wayne; but he made it impossible to _prove_ it. From there, it might not have to be that hard to guess that his wards could be the successive Robins

That last bit of dialogue Batman has with Jason is haunting in so many ways. He finally just gets it out as to why he doesn't kill people, why not even Joker. Despite him being the dark night, the symbol of fear for all criminals. He's afraid, not because it's hard. If anything, he wishes that was the case opposed to reality. Bruce Green is my second favorite batman voice. Though yeah, I would kill to hear Konroy say those lines too lol. Sidenote: I think the idea is at least for now, Bruce really doesn't want a partner or sidekick. Dick is sidelined because of Bruce's own guilt and really doesn't want him around. Yes he's competent, but Bruce doesn't let show and that's his flaw. Only by the end of Dicks time does Bruce tell him thank you.

I understand your disdain for how Nightwing is treated in this movie. You aren't wrong but I think you misunderstood why it is this way. They wanted Nightwing to thematically show how a good Robin can elevate himself into something greater while a bad Robin turns himself into Red Hood. But then they ran into the problem of Nightwing naturally helping Batman in the Red Hood fight so they broke his leg to get him out of the story. He would only take away from the fight at the end or just he home for no reason. It does suck how he's treated but it was necessary for them to make their point. Great video though. Please do talk more ab Jason Todd.

One of my favorite Batman movies out there. This movie definitely made me become a Jason Todd fan. I never knew much about Jason, wasn’t much into reading comics at the time and only knew Dick and Tim through cartoons. I learn of Jason here and there when I got access to explore the internet but more as cliffnotes. This movie made me care for the character, got me interested in reading comics with him, especially with Redhood and The Outlaws and having moments with Jason interacting with Dick, Damian, and Barbara (minus being love interests, don’t know where I am on that).; this made me love Jason Todd as my favorite former sidekick and beating Dick’s place in my Bat Family. Also I wanna touch on Joker in this movie. He’s definitely one of my favorite incarnations, definitely behind the Animated Series Joker of my top favorite Jokers. Everyone else was above good. Not as good as some other animated versions, but surpassing a couple. Especially Batman, I liked more when his emotions slips up, interactions with Jason from being proud with him to clashing on their views on taking down criminals and Batman explaining why he didn’t kill The Joker onscreen. Nightwing was okay, wish we got more out of him, at least a fun fight scene of the two punching each other.

I gotta disagree with you on the faithfulness argument. It’s entirely different from the comics. In A Death in the Family comic, instead of Ras al Ghul using Joker to destabilize the European economy, Joker’s selling a missle launcher to get money. And Jason is trying to find his mother. Of course, Ra’s is used in this movie to show us the Lazarus Pit that revives Jason, so it’s fine.

I believe there was a point in introducing and using Nightwing as little as they do. Simply, they probably just wanted to highlight the depth and legacy behind the Robin title, and overall the Batfamily. Just like Ra’s was mainly used to introduce a simplified reasoning for how Jason returned (because a universe shattering punch by Superboy Prime is a bit much), Dick’s presence was used to enhance and steer the narrative in a way as well

I think the fact that Dick Grayson as Nightwing, is no longer a kid and looks similar enough with the mask on, possible similar fighting styles etc, some of Batman’s more frequent foes, such as The Joker, could figure out the new guy fighting with Batman is the former Robin all growed up. And word gets out from there that the once Robin is now Nightwing.

Great video. Imo this is a masterclass on adapting source material into another media. Judd Winick wrote both comic and animation and it shows. He understands what matters in the story and used the possibility of world building in a self contained story to create a continuity that is faithful and different in all the right places. Under The Red Hood is not even mentioned as top 5 Batman story (I believe it isnt, I think it could be top 10 at least), but the fact that it was so well made that people talk about more than Year One and The Dark Knight Returns (also faithful adaptations of top 1 and 2 comic arcs for 90% of Batman's fanbase) shows just how much care was put into it. Now I would like to add to the Dick Grayson discussion if I may: I understand the complaint about Nightwing but the thing is, he was actually a cameo for the early half of the arc. If I recall correctly the only extra scene Dick was in envolved the Mister Freeze and the Kryptonite crest heist. This is has more to do with the way stories are told in comics (decompressed storytelling) and how you adapt it into animation (you have to tie everything together in a more condensed fashion) than a creatively bad decision imo. Plus, Bruce sidelining Dick imo is less about him being irresponsible and more about him shielding Dick. Bruce is patronizing as hell even with his grown up partners. Always has been. So I wasnt particularly bothered by the points you brought up, but I understand them.

One thing about this film i love is how amazing the fights scenes are. IMO, these are the best fight scenes in any Batman film. Simply because of how skilled Bruce and Jason are. But also What I’ve noticed about the fights as that as well as both of them being skilled, Bruce and Jason’s characters completely match their fighting styles. Jason fights like someone who is aggressive, unpredictable, cocky, dangerous and a lust for vengeance. Bruce is more refined, patient, experienced and mature. Though Bruce has is aggressive moments (when he needs to be). In a way Jason is what Bruce could’ve become had he fallen into the abyss and only followed his anger. What separates them is Batmans moral code, and that’s why he is completely ahead of his opponents and Jason. And especially when it gets to a point where Bruce has to take him down and completely outclasses Jason and saying ”you say you wanna be better than me! but it won’t happen! NOT LIKE THIS!” It’s just so awesome seeing Batman with so much experience and thinking steps ahead every time. While also seeing his understanding on a different level.

I don't think the Nightwing subplot was to show Batman's poor mentoring or anything like that. I think it was to show both how Jason could have turned out as a person (altruistic and caring) and to display how much Jason's death affected Bruce. His willingness to work with Dick had become really small because of his trauma due to his failure to protect Jason.

How does everyone know Nightwing is the first Robin and there is a new one? Because as time passes and people see robin age and grow, then suddenly there is a new hero who does the same things as Robin and at the same time a younger new Robin shows up.... it's obvious in the criminal world, word travels fast... That's also part of how Tim Drake figured it out.

The other problem I've found with the movie might be the fact that two of the characters (Red Hood and Nightwing) are played by pretty famous actors which is kinda...weird, in a way (maybe this is a problem throughout the whole voice acting industry...I don't know...). Because sometimes, at certain points during the movie, I can hear their other roles when I hear them talk. Like I can hear bits of Barney from How I Met Your Mother in Neil's performance as Nightwing and knowing now that The Red Hood is played by the same guy who was Dean Winchester, I can totally hear Dean in Jensen's performance as The Red Hood (maybe that's because in both performances, Jensen used his normal voice. He never needed or had to put on a cartoonish voice because both roles aren't cartoonish characters). So, again, that's one of my gripes with the movie. Other than that, it's a good movie overall. Also, seeing Jason Todd as Robin at the very end of the movie being so excited to fight crime was cute, sad and bittersweet. 🥺
