So many times I see bowlers react to leaving a ten pin ( righty), 7 (lefty), they get upset thinking they should carry, but during their string of strikes they carry a brooklyn, noser, and nothing but smiles. Attitude, mental part of game so important, especially in future games, thanks for the lesson it should ring loud and clear. Much applause 👏.

I just got back into a league for the first time since middle school (thanks to my wife, for pushing me to go back to something I enjoy). I had quit league play back then, as I had gotten tired of my dad being critical but with nothing constructive to correct the mistakes I was making. I loved bowling, but I had a hard time separating it from the negativity I felt when I pulled a shot or didn't follow through, always with his voice on my head, whether he was there, or not. Already, 4 weeks into the league, I'm learning to fix mistakes I have had for 30+ years, and having fun enjoying the game with others. I took the step this week to ask for pointers and help...it felt like a big step, for me. I'm happy I came across this video, and glad that your dad had such a positive influence on you and your game. I do better when I slow down, and take each shot separately; that really is a great philosophy, of taking it one roll at a time. Thanks for sharing this; I'm taking that mentality with me to the alley, next time.

Thank you for this video. I'm 52 years old and super competitive and I often show emotions based on how bad or good I'm bowling. I've had friends tell me before that I need to settle down but you never really take it to heart until you hear it from a stranger. I will definitely re adjust my attitude even at the age of 52 moving forward. Once again thank you for this story.

Thank you. This was great. 'Think one frame at a time'. Tried it today while playing a six-game series. It was almost a meditative experience. Perhaps for the first time, instead of reacting to the usual thoughts that rise during a game, like after a couple strikes thinking 'I wonder how many more strikes i can do', or 'i hope i don't miss this spare' after an earlier miss. But instead of falling into the thought and letting it affect my game, i sort of just let them go and came back to 'think one frame at a time'. In terms of scores, nothing extraordinary, but I did have more after 5 games than what i got in the previous six-game series a couple weeks back.

This was outstanding , and I found out you’re from “back home” if you bowled in Easton you were less than an hour from where I grew up😊 . And the frame at a time concept hit home, just last night at league I was working a Dutch 200 going into the tenth. I left a ringing ten and let that get in my head , didn’t settle myself and missed the spare , resulting in a 188 . Now after your video I have had proper perspective renewed , thank you my friend .

Breaks my heart in a strange way. Never had the father son relationship he had. I needed a mentor. I might not have walked away from the game way back then. I might have ended up competing against him. We started about the same time. I've come back now and am trying to find what I missed. I failed at the only Pro event I bowled in as a young man and, instead of learning, or having those lessons in my mind, I didn't learn from it. Not then, anyway. I needed to hear those words back then, but I will take them to heart now and learn going forward. I'm here until I can't deliver a ball down the lanes anymore. I lost that ability to illness and disease for a time.. but now I'm in bonus time and have a chance again. Time to learn. Thanks for sharing, honestly, what you are going through. I hope you can refind your joy in the sport. Take your time, though.

I truly loved this. As this league season started, I have been working on a different mental approach. If I leave a stone 8 or 9 or ring a 10 pin, I realize it’s part of the game. Sure the pins could have fell, but I was in the pocket knowing the look I had was really good. Pick up the spare, and focus on the next shot. Have I been perfect at it? No, but slowly getting better, and my game has improved along with it. It’s a mental grind on the lanes, and that is why I can’t get enough. This sport not only challenges us to get better with our skills, but our mind as well. Loved this piece!

When I was younger I bowled a lot of money bowling and bowled a lot of tournaments and it was my part time job. I can’t tell how many times I would go head to head with bowlers that were much better than me but lost their temper and kicked the rack and would cuss and throw things. So the last three years has been upsetting a little since I use to average over 200 up until then. I’m finally getting my timing back and hopefully I’ll get back to 200 average soon. My point is your dad was right and I take one ball and one frame at a time and I’m starting to get there now. Thanks for the content I enjoyed it. And Happy New Year too.

Great video. Staying focused in a tournament the whole way through is very important. There are times I'm bowling w/ people in tournaments, and they just mentally check out, or once someone withdrew from bowling bad. But for me, the times I've bowled really well in tournaments, is because of things I learned when bowling really bad. Coming into a tournament with wrong balls, playing wrong areas, not knowing how to play on broken down lanes. It's really hart to simulate that outside of a tournament. I actually had a 118 game last week on a really tough condition. But if looked at correctly is a learning experience.

Unfortunately the only way to learn how to bowl tournaments, is to bowl tournaments. It’s a mean, steep learning curve, but once you’re up there it’s pretty satisfying.
